New this year, Fox News has a page for each team, much like ESPN has had for years. Also much like ESPN's early years of having an Ohio Bobcat page, Fox is having some issues with the Bobcat page since they can't tell "Ohio" from "Ohio State". They also have a problem that ESPN never had, being unable to tell things like the Ohio high school football playoffs from the Bobcats. Here's the page:
http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/ohio-bobcats-team

Leading Team Headlines?
"Ohio State beats Michigan; Eds rolls over Hudson"
"Ohio State wins; Hudson beats Mentor—again"
"Ohio State makes a statement, and High School Playoff predictions"
"Hudson beats Mentor; Ohio State wins a sloppy one"

Hopefully by the time the season gets here they will get these problems resolved.

IMHO, just another reason to bring back the U!! I just think that the OHIO has not been all that good at being OUr brand. Seriously, what 10 years in and established sports people still can't get it right or confuse it. I got the same thing when I tried a google search on 1968 OHIO football helmet. Got all kinds of Ohio State stuff and high school stuff but nothing for OHIO (as in bobcats). Either we aren't communicating effectively enough OR it's a lost cause.

Sorry folks...

I hear that Bill Murray has experience with situations like this.

when you click on the link below the Ohio State articles that says "more" it goes to a page dedicated to the Bobcats. The Buckeye headlines on our home page have zero to do with our name being OHIO and everything to do with an idiot at Fox not doing his job correctly.

Unfortunately you're wrong. First off, fox news doesn't get anything right, so why would they get us right? People like you and your attitudes hold Ohio back. You and the rest of your defeatist ilk are the reason ohio state gets away with usurping our name. You are the reason our current administration doesn't seem to "get" Ohio. You're just a bunch of defeatist wussies who think we should just be happy in our little corner of the state. Don't take what they give us, take what's OURS. AGain, show some freaking backbone.

I think it's simply a matter of the page being new, and not a deliberate error that can't be fixed. I think there are problems with a lot of teams' pages, not just the Ohio page. As I said, hopefully they will get it fixed by the time the season starts. Realistically, though, I recall that it took ESPN 2-3 years before the Ohio Bobcat page had only Ohio news.
http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/_/id/195/ohio-bo...

The Fox news page is an extension of Scout.com, not an extension of "Fox News", which is how I stumbled onto it. I don't see any reason to get into a general discussion of the pros and cons of Fox here.

By the way, I have discovered that if I want Ohio news, when I do a google or whatever search, I always add "Bobcats" and "-State" to the search string, and that helps a lot to filter out things I don't want to see.

At the Stones concert Mick gave a shout out to the "Ohio University Choir". Would it have been more effective/beneficial to us if he would have said the "OHIO Choir"? I don't think so.......chew on that.......

Casper, you can't be more wrong about this. We are wining this battle more and more every day. Why you can't see that and keep taking the now exceptions to the rule to try to prove this defeatist point is beyond me. ESPN is very consistent in using proper terminology for our "U." I watched the baseball game against Wrong State yesterday and they never once said "Ohio U." They did say University of Ohio once, but that's not nearly as bad to me. In fact, in a bizarre way it actual shows progress because the schools that are the "University of [State Name]" are usually the big Morrill Act land grant schools. I had an interesting conversation with my new dentist earlier this week. He is from Canal Winchester and has his dental degree and I think undergraduate degree from OSU. His receptionist had an OSU mouse pad. I said he need to get an Ohio one now that he had a practice in Athens. This started conversation in which the dentist said he was a big OSU fan and he hated Michigan. He then said how happy he was when "Ohio beat Michigan in basketball" a few years ago. He then went on to say, without any prompting from me, that he thought it neat that we shoved it in their faces when their coaches were calling Ohio State "Ohio." In similar vein I have a close friend in Columbus who used to always call us "Ohio U." He knows says just "Ohio" most of the time. This friend is not just some casual OSU fan either. Woody's son Steve was the best man at his wedding. He lives and breathes OSU football. When I'm away from Athens I find more and more folks who know what school I'm talking about when I say just "Ohio." It is a little frustrating that an exception seems to be in the Cleveland area. I'm not sure why that is, but that's not a reason to give up the good fight when we are wining it.

A previous poster took a shot at FoxNews, which was inappropriate. FNC gets a lot of things right. They haven't had any news person recently who imagined he had landed under enemy fire in a war zone. They also haven't had a newsperson who gave big gifts to a prominent politician's foundation and then tried to act like they were doing an impartial analysis of that person's association with the foundation and whether or not gifts to that foundation had influenced the politician's decisions. In analyzing FNC you have to be careful to distinguish the commentators like O'Reilly, Hannity, Kelly, Van Susteren, etc from their straight news folks like Chris Wallace, Bret Hume, Shepard Smith, etc. The commentators tend to range from hard right (Hannity) to idiosyncratic libertarian (O'Reilly). Their straight news folks are as good as any on CNN or the major networks. At least that's my opinion, and I think it's a reasonable one.

DFC--Fox actually gets everything right. Extreme, extreme, over the edge, looney right.

Wouldn't happen if an OHIO alum was in charge of Fox TV.

In a recent independent survey of cable news services, the most opinionated news service, by a very, very wide margin, was MSNBC, with Fox in the middle, and CNN lowest. MSNBC was 85% opinion/15% news, while Fox was 55% opinion/45% news, and CNN was 46% opinion/54% news.
http://tinyurl.com/bqrj73a

I personally listen to a variety of news, and the days of non-slanted news are long gone...if they ever existed. My personal opinion is that the news that has the least objectivity comes from NPR, precisely because it makes no effort to be comprehensive, but instead merely presents snippets that support their perspective. My preference for actual news is for CNN, ABC, CBS, or Fox since they all provide a comprehensive look at the news.

Then there are services that are primarily opinion, such as the Huffington Post on the left and the Drudge Report on the right. I have no use for either extreme, but some people love one or the other.

Sadly, most people simply listen to whatever news and opinion fits the preexisting opinions, rather than listening to a variety of news. As a result none of the services actually have much ability to affect thinking, since those listening already share their opinion.

In any case, this thread isn't about the news. It's a thread about a sports page, and Fox's Ohio Bobcat page should be judged for it's ability to display pertinent sports information in a timely manner that actually is about Ohio. Right now I would have to give them a failing grade, but they will no doubt improve.

Sorry, I don't chew on silliness. In the referenced comment "Choir" is the subject and "Ohio University" is the used to describe the subject. Which choir is it? It's the Ohio University Choir. The use of just "Ohio" as an adjective would have been insufficient and confusing.

When we're talking about the use of "Ohio" vs "Ohio U" in a sports context we're talking about those words being used as proper nouns, its different. Besides, the media guide states that the use of either "Ohio" or "Ohio University" is acceptable.

Old guy, just curious did your shirt have the attack cat along with the word OHIO on it? Or was it just a nice shiny green with an "arch" Ohio on it?

I do agree when combined with the words "University" or "Bobcats" or with the attack cat you do get a brand identity that more people might get. My whole point is I don't think the word O-H-I-O by itself gets you that. People think of the State or Ohio State first and we are the afterthought. One alternative I talked about was making the "arch" OHIO something everyone gets. That is sorta what those 1968 football helmets appeared to be trying to do with the "funky" "O"s at the beginning and end of the word OHIO and inside the state outline. Deciduous seems to think I have some hang about about the letter U but my whole point is let's get a brand that is really effective and differentiates us. You know, the Oregon "O" or the Alabama script "A"or the Michigan with the block M. And, there are lots of others out there that everyone readily identifies with a university.

To be honest, I'm just excited that Mick Jagger said the phrase "Ohio University"-I honestly never thought that would even be a remote possibility! Ohio University in the house!!

Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming......

Casper71, I don't think you'll ever see universal agreement on what Ohio's symbol should be. As for me, I'm glad that Ohio doesn't have a single letter O in whatever form or shape as its symbol. The use of a single letter no longer seems very original. I'm probably an outlier on this, but I really like the arched Ohio with the bobcat face. I've never really seen another symbol that really resembles that. On the other hand, travelling in Cinci this past weekend, I saw a block "M" that I assumed represented Michigan. It was yellow and had the same or very similar shape. Upon passing the car, I saw that the school was Cincinnati Moeller, not the Univ. of Michigan. So I think that sometimes the use of a single letter as a symbol can lead to confusion. But like I said, I might be in the minority on this.

Green arch Ohio on the black Russell shirt. And, more likely an alum than someone who recognized the brand. Followed a car last night with a window decal that had red figures' arms spelling O_H_I_O..... that thing O$U has purloined. My daughter noticed it and I explained it wasn't our "brand" but possible an aftermarket piece. Think it was referring to the state of Ohio????

Sorry, I don't chew on silliness. In the referenced comment "Choir" is the subject and "Ohio University" is the used to describe the subject. Which choir is it? It's the Ohio University Choir. The use of just "Ohio" as an adjective would have been insufficient and confusing.

When we're talking about the use of "Ohio" vs "Ohio U" in a sports context we're talking about those words being used as proper nouns, its different. Besides, the media guide states that the use of either "Ohio" or "Ohio University" is acceptable.
uh - The OHIO football team.............
uh- context.

I travel often and widely and make a point of wearing OHIO apparel. Seldom do I feel a need to differentiate Ohio from OSU. People around the country and the globe increasingly "get it."
At the Armstrong airport in N'Awlins last week, I got a "go Bobcats" walking into the rental car area from someone walking out. Had my black Ohio polo on.
I give a "Go Bobcats" evertime I pass a Miami Grad, they get the point easily.

Sorta related: I always try to take note when I am out in Columbus of the number of people wearing their respective school colors (for example, a month or so ago when I took my kids to the zoo). osu is always the leader, but Ohio is usually #2. It is always well ahead of any other MAC school (you might get a random Fiami or Kent shirt/hat, but that's it), and really the only other school that I would say matches or passes us every now and then is Michigan.

Take that for what it's worth in this discussion.

Agreed. Up here in Cleveland I see far more people wearing Ohio gear than any other MAC school, far more than Akron and Kent State for sure.

Mark, on the single letter thing I agree. That's why I used Oregon and Alabama as my first two examples. As for that block M around Cincy, since I live here I see it all the time. I am amazed that Michigan hasn't gotten on Moeller. Their colors are the same as Michigan and I think the block M matches it. I guess Michigan has trademarked the whole name with the block M and NOT just the M. It goes back to my point about simply making whatever the brand is effective. I think we all know the Duck's O or 'Bamas script A.

And since we are talking about this subject...again what about that silly University of Oklahoma using OU? Why do we let them get away with that and nobody blinks? I guess we let them trademark our initials and not their own?

Ironic coming from the guy who wants us to give up the name Ohio to Ohio State.
