I think when you see stories like this, it's clear KSU is just waiting until the end of the season to fire Burns.

Burns has gone with a youth approach, so firing him would be pointless. He's got talent; they're just young. Hopefully they beat Aron.

What's the value in firing now vs waiting for November 30th?

Seems pretty odd. They've been pretty competitive despite the not so great record. Makes you wonder if there is more to the story.

Probably. They've had a ton of injuries and are running three or four deep in the depth chart at some positions.

Should the Mcelwain era be ending at CMU? That program is typically a consistent winner, and he is taking it in a different direction.

He may, but you have to ask the question- are they any better in his second year than he was in his first? They’ve got something like 26 seniors and 38 transfers- what have they done this year to show they’re getting better? You would think they wouldn’t be the worse team in the FBS in his second year.

They've been on a slide the last three years. After going 9-4 in 2021, they're 4-8, 5-7 and 3-7, with two 3-5 seasons and 1-5 in the MAC (they're 0-5 since losing Labas in the Ohio game).

According to the Detroit News, McElwain is making over a million bucks a years, apparently with a $150,000 retention bonus payable every Feb. 15. If he's fired for something other than cause, there's a buyout of between one and two million. He's also still getting a "significant" amount every year from the University of Florida. https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/college/2023/02/... /.

His post game interview a few days ago almost felt like he was starting to think that he was going to get fired.

He had one winning season and that was the Covid year. I'm surprised they hung onto him this long.

For Ted's question, I guess the benefit would be to get a jump start in the search ahead of everyone else which means more time to recruit.

To clarify, what was odd is not letting him finish out the final 2 games. I would not have called it odd in 2 weeks.

For the Akron followers- why is Moorhead not on the list, they’re somewhat competitive but still not out of the bottom 2 in the MAC

Are you sure? Akron seems likely to beat Kent, which will put them ahead of CMU, unless CMU manages to beat WMU (CMU leads 7-0 after one quarter), or beats NIU next week.

Of course, I’m talking about that when I wrote the post and even if they win and CMU. and Ball St lose, Akron is still the second worse team in the MAC by any standard I can think of.

Interesting suggestions:

Based on this list, I would go with Arbuckle. WKU spread offense plus he worked with Cam Ward.

It always cracks me up when the team is such a cluster, beyond repair, an unmitigated disaster that they have to fire the coach mid-season...

then promote all of his assistants.

Sometimes it really just is the head coach who is just holding everyone down, but you get what I'm sayin.. offensive sucks out loud, coach FIRED. Offensive Coordinator... SAVE US.

I don't see any urgent reason at Ball State that demanded immediate action. They have been playing well recently, beating NIU, and battling hard against Miami and Buffalo. Their recruiting looks fine. Ah well, this gives everyone more time to plan for what to do. Ball State can start looking for a new coach, the players can start contemplating their chances in the portal, and NEU and his assistants can get a jump start on looking for a new job.

Looks like their interim coach is offensive line coach Colin Johnson. Played at Ball State from 99-2002.

“This place means so much more to me than you know someone who sees it as a job opportunity. I'm ingrained in this place,” Johnson said. “I would do anything and everything for this place.”

“When I left here, the dream was to be back here as a head coach,” Johnson said. “So as you can imagine, what I'm living right now is a little bit of that dream… It’s not something I take lightly.”

This guy is gonna have them fired up.
