This is where the portal gets ugly for our entrants. Walton's move within the conf is "quasi down", certainly in terms of quality of life and fan support. Cox Jr appears to have one offer from a 3-9 program who went 0-3 against the MAC.

The rest of our guys are going to transfer down for more playing time or are willing to roll the dice, knowing that they may have played their last year.

The one really hurts IMO is Kacmarek. He could have played a big role in our offense for the next year or two. I don't blame him for going, I just hope he gets to see the field there.

I was wondering if Ohio has the policy of not taking them back or if it’s selective. One guy came back already after declaring for the portal so I’m confused about the policy here.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I actually think Walton made the right move. He's been with the Bobcats for five years and had a nice career here. Next year the Cats will likely throw the ball less. I took a look at Walton's major and it is Coaching Education. Assuming he wants to be a coach, expanding his network by playing under Chris Creighton for a season is actually a good choice.

I actually thought at the beginning that Walton's decision was the worst of all that had entered the portal. In hindsight, the decision seems to make sense.

I appreciate your optimistic point of view, and it may turn out to be a good move for him, but it was also the only offer he received.

Kacmarek will get paid and see the field. Not certain he will be the top TE, but he will play some. He will earn way more cash in Columbus than he could have made in Athens.

I assume its more about his size / blocking abilities. It's not like he put up crazy receiving numbers in his time here.

2022 - 20 catches, 264 rec yards, 0 TDs --> #8 TE in the MAC in Receiving yards
2023 - 22 catches, 243 rec yards, 2 TDs --> #6 TE in the MAC in Receiving yards

He wasn't even the top TE in Athens.

The 3rd or 4th TE on any team isn't making money.

People really have a fundamental misunderstanding of the NIL and how it works. More often than not, people on this board use it to heal their wounds.

If Walton didn’t want to be at Ohio any longer, then his exit is good for BOTH him and Ohio. I wish him luck but I’ll take guys like Jones, Hendricks and Harris over him in a heartbeat moving forward.

Wish it was keeping the TE and adding Gundy, but every once in a while gotta be a humanitarian and make a fair trade.

Excited for our guys going elsewhere, and twice as excited to see the guys coming in. Definitely seem to be mining hard for players to get.
I would think getting a QB from a big program would make recruiting WR’s and TE’s a little easier. Also, when was the last time we had a lefty at QB?
I would temper expectations a bit. Gunnar was a zero-star recruit. Non-scholarship player.

Always good to get guys from big programs who are winners, probably has a strong work ethic being a coaches son, hard worker trying to prove himself that he belongs, etc... but I don't expect him to push Navarro - who we just saw excel in a bowl game, will have three years in the program.

These days having a capable back-up is as good as gold.
Gundy is a solid addition. He’ll challenge for the #1 spot but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Navarro win it. Also, they said during the bowl broadcast that Harris will be back next year, so it sounds like his issue was season ending and not career ended. He’ll be in the mix for the spot too. I expect a really good competition from those three this spring, and wouldn’t be surprised to see one of the two who don’t win the QB1 spot head into the second portal when it opens. It’s basically how this plays out most of the time nowadays.

I presume he believes he can become the starter, and that he will then make a lot. While that matters to him, it doesn't matter to us. He's moved on. The question that matters now is how well Ohio can replace him.

This is how it's going to be, with lots of player turnover. While Ohio was hit harder than most, this year, it will even out over time, and all teams will lose some of there best players, and some of their backups who aren't getting playing time. The teams then have to be nimble, and find replacements. Not so long ago, teams added ~18-23 players a year, mostly Freshmen. Now it will be more like 30-35 a year, including Freshmen, JUCOs, and players from the portal. It may keep going up, and end up higher than that. It's not an inherently worse system, nor an inherently better one, just a different one. In this new environment, some coaches will thrive, while others may struggle.

Your comment regarding spring ball is exactly why the portal window is after the regular season. If it was after Bowl games you’d have no competition in spring ball and that’s not fair to the athletes.

Gunnar had a couple of MAC offers out of high school….Toledo and one of the directional Michigan’s.

He looks like he will be a great fit for our system. He didn’t run that much at OkSt but that doesn’t mean he can’t.

Some of the OkSt fans on Twitter thought he should have been their number one QB. Those fans are now Bobcat fans.

A lot of time it boils down to one simply thing. Opportunity. An opportunity to play and perform. Look no further than the bowl game vs Georgia Southern. Ohio didn’t have its top 2 QB’s, top 2 RB’s, 2 of the top WR’s and the top LB. Guys like Hunt and Navarro made the most out of their new opportunities. Had all those other guys played, those guys likely wouldn’t have even seen the field in that game. Ohio would be going into 2024 with a ton of unknowns with say a guy like Hunt. Instead, after seeing him get a chance to play and show what he can and is capable of doing, everyone is feeling a million times better about him going into 2024. It boiled down to his opportunity. I’m willing to bet Gundy will also make the most of his next season as well. The OL has 4 starters returning, two beasts at RB, a stud WR and another playmaker to run along side of him. And three more than capable QB’s. Last year’s offense way underperformed IMO. I wouldn’t be surprised to see next year’s offense take a step or two forward past what 2023’s achieved. Plus, the defense returns a lot of quality guys collectively. You can rest assured that Ohio will contend in 2024.

Who's the stud WR, Jacoby Jones? Is this definite?

Does anyone have stats on the percentage of this years portal guys who have actually graduated from the school they are transferring away from? Covid year probably makes this figure higher than it will be in the future.

That's a good question. I see that some are referred to as Grad transfers which apparently (I may be wrong) participate in team activities earlier.

A question I had is how many of the guys entering our portal for us were not going to be on scholarship next year? If you weren't a significant contributor for four years, were you going to keep that scholarship for a fifth or sixth year? If you are graduating is entering the portal just a move you make because it doesn't cost anything to try.

I don't mind him leaving but sayonara. Makes me wonder how I'd feel if Mark Sears wanted to transfer back. I probably wouldn't throw a party but I also wouldn't be totally against it. If Albin let Walton back I'd feel the same way.

In terms of the guys coming in, I'd take 20 Walter Reynolds from Holy Cross (or Leake and Johnson this year) to make an impact. A player is a player and if they've shown toughness in D-2 or FCS, let's bring them in. Basketball-wise I always look at JR Shumate at Toledo or even Tommy Schmock with us. Guys who scored a thousand points in D-3 and made a successful transition to D-1 ball because they had the "it" factor.

Albin took it extremely personally when players left before the bowl game. And if you knew the story behind Mark Sears' departure, you wouldn't welcome him back.

Sears met with coaching staff on a Monday. They had developed a comprehensive plan to get him some money and, most important, publicity to aid in his plans to eventually enter the draft. He assured them he was all in. The next morning, Boals received a call from Chubb Hall advising him that Sears and his parents had just completed the paperwork to transfer. Never heard from him again.
