Powell has been named to the Rimmington Trophy Watch List. The award honors America's best Center. So far, so good... until you come to the fact that he is one of 63 centers named to the watch list. Now, doing some math here, there are about 129 FBS teams. Of those probably about 60% of them them have returning starters at center. That would mean that there are about 77 returning starters at center. From those 77, they were able to pare the list down to the best 63 to name to the watch list.

I don't mean to diminish the honor, but when I saw the headline, I was thinking that 15-20 centers would be named to the watch list, not 63.

And the winner does not necessarily have to come from that list, though with so many guys selected, it'd be extremely unlikely for that to happen. The winners is picked based on All-American votes.

Agreed, Alan. It is a worthy cause. I'm also intrigued that Boomer's son is named Gunnar. That's a very important name in my family history as it was the first name of my maternal grandfather, an uncle and a first-cousin. The cousin died prematurely not of CF but of type 1 diabetes.

Similar to the amount of bowl games. Every mediocre team makes a bowl game, just about every center in D-1 football gets names to this watch list, kids don't keep score in t-ball games..... aren't the "scrubs' ever weeded out of society anymore ? Wow, we have become a socialist nation, even in our sports...uggggh. C'mon, 'Merica !!!!

That was the point I was trying to make. I would think 20 players would be more than enough for the "Rimmington Watch List". If someone had a good season, and they wanted to add him to the list, they still could. There is only one center per team, and my guess is that they nominated 90% of the returning starters.

By contrast, I noticed that the Paul Hornung award, to which Daz Patterson was nominated, was much more selective. The Paul Hornung award goes to "the most versatile player in major college football", and includes nominees that have scored 7 different ways, passing, receiving, rushing, interception returns, fumble returns, punt returns and kick returns. As such there could be 4-5 players on each team that could be considered, or about 500 total players. From those those 500 players they pared it down to 44 nominees (about 10% of the pool), including 11 Seniors, 22 Juniors, and 11 Sophomores. Daz is one of the 11 Seniors, so that's a credit to him.

Last year Daz was not the featured back, but he still gained 1,126 all-purpose yards (93.8 yards/game), including 526 kick off return yards and 348 rushing yards. The only other nominees from the MAC were Corey Jones of Toledo and Ronnie Moore of BG.

I doubt any one of the players has scored by more than perhaps 4 or 5 of the possible ways. The nominee list is diverse, however, and includes players from a wide variety of positions. No doubt all of the nominees have put the ball in the endzone, but they all have done so via a different combination of ways.
