I was a little surprised to hear Pelini call out YSU's fans after Saturday's game.
"I'm going to challenge the rest of the fans -- if you want to be a fan, be a fan," he said. "If you want to have a winner, you better support this team and get people in the seats."

From Vindy sports reported Joe Scalzo's blog today.

YSU won in OT last night beating Division 3 rival Robert Morris which was 1-11 last year.

When my Youngstown friends tell me they got a Nebraska head coach too, I tell them there are significant differences in Bo and Frank.

Robert Morris is in the Division 1 Northeast Conference in all sports. There are some D1 schools in that play non-scholarship football but they can't play in D3 (the non-scholarship division) since they are D1 schools. They have to play in D1AA and play in a conference that prevents giving out football scholarships by its own rules.

The NEC, though, is the oddball here. D1AA is allowed, I think, 55 scholarships, even though a few conferences allow zero. The NEC only allows something like 30 which means they give out a pretty similar number as a typical D2 school.

YSU did give Pittsburgh a decent game in week 1.

I stand corrected regarding Robert Morris' NCAA affiliation.

Pellini calling out the YSU fans in week 2 of his rein is the point I was making.

This is just a guess on my part (call it a fearless prediction if you want): Youngstown State University will be applying again for a spot in the MAC and will announce intentions of playing FBS football within the next year or two. Given the pedigree of the school's president and head coach this just seems to me the obvious direction the athletic program will take.

I'll give you fearless. I think it would be a pretty stupid move given their solid FCS history and Ohio's incredible oversaturation of FBS programs, most of which don't meet attendance thresholds or come close to operating in the black. Then again, everyone seems to think that FBS football is some kind of brass ring to grab, so maybe you're right.

How long ago was their most recent effort to get a spot in the MAC? There were some years in the late 90s and early 2000s where I think the Penguins could have defeated any Ohio-based MAC school and probably UC too. I know they would have manhandled us during a few of the Knorr years.

YSU lost at Pitt by 8 in Week 1. Last week, Pitt beat Akron in Infocision by 17. I know that you can't always make an apples-to-apples comparison that way, but YSU would seem to be competitive with most MAC schools, anyway.

I can't see the MAC having 13 for football after UMass leaves, unless it was a school that would enlarge the MAC's footprint, which YSU ain't. We've had unbalanced scheduling in the East for the past nine seasons. People have lived with it but I don't think anybody really likes it.

Not that a brass ring is of a lot of value, but it's better than the lead ring that FCS is. FCS seems to exist in the no-man's land between the high costs of FBS and the lower costs of Division II/III. It has most of the costs of G5, but not much more exposure than Division II. That's why you see anyone who can get from FCS to FBS jumping at the chance.
