I am as frustrated as anybody with all of the injuries we have experienced the past five years or so, mostly notably so many shoulder injuries.

With that said, it is important to keep things in perspective. I attended the Georgia game this Saturday as we visited my daughter who is a freshman at UGA.

On a kickoff return I immediately noted to my wife that the 6'3" / 190 UGA kicker had "blown up" one of the Southern Players who went to block him. Unfortunately Devon Gales who is much smaller at 5'9" / 158 pounds did not get up and is currently paralyzed from the waist down. Devon dipped his head slightly and the kicker did nothing wrong and was simply shedding the block. We see these incidents replayed on TV but when you see it live right in front of you it causes you to reflect about life and the friendships we have with family and friends.

I encourage all of you to keep Devon in your prayers! The Georgia players, coaches and wives have been very supportive all weekend and have been at the hospital with Devon's family who flew to Athens after the game.

Very sad situation.

Stories like this seem to be occurring more frequently. This year there have been at least two high school football players who have died after a hit during a game (most recently this past weekend).

Soon there will be a major movie released on the dangers of concussions and football.

I like watching football (non-professional level) like many, but I also believe that it's days are likely numbered. I think it will always be around in some fashion, but I think it will be a lower tier.

Let's hope he does well, but spinal injuries are serious, and usually have very bad consequences. My brother injured his about a year ago when he slipped on a throw rug in his home, and fell backwards, striking his neck on a doorknob, so it can happen to anyone, not just footall players. My brother was very, very lucky, and while he did need an emergency operation, and still has physical therapy, he can walk and has full use of his arms, though limited strength. The doctor said he was within less than 1mm of being a quadriplegic.
