We don't have a good QB
Too many transfers this year
Results show we are just an average team
Don't expect a MACC game opportunity
We will be lucky to see qualify for a bowl game

I am a realist, and disappointed that we can't field a better team.

Do you really think Ohio will be lucky to win more than one game that's left on the schedule?

I get the frustration at the loss. But they are actually one game better than I had them in the predictions thread. And I was admittedly optimistic, but not super optimistic.

But to suggest they will be lucky to win more than 1 game when they'll likely be favored in 4 of the 5 remaining games is kinda crazy.

I see it much differently. I think Ohio has a QB that creates many matchup problems. Now, is he inconsistent at times?.Yes. But when he's on, he's creating headaches for opponents. While Ohio had a number of transfers, this team has far exceeded my expectations of how it would overcome them. And in fact, they have also added some key transfers which have been really good additions this year. Ohio is tied for 2nd in the MAC and is right in the mix for the MACC. There isn't a team on Ohio's schedule that it can't beat. Buffalo never wins in Athens, Kent State is dreadful, EMU is certainly beatable and Ball State stinks. The only team that should give Ohio a true battle will be Toledo. I can almost assure you at least one of the teams that lands in Detroit will have multiple MAC losses. Ohio is absolutely in the running for the MACC. And this team will for sure qualify for a bowl. Kent State and Ball State are sure wins (so there's the 6 wins needed for a bowl), while Buffalo and EMU are probable wins. Toledo I would say is a toss up game for Ohio. It could be a win, but it might be a loss. Still, this team is for sure going bowling and misses out on having to play NIU, BG and WMU, which I think is the key for Ohio getting to Detroit.

Here are a couple other facts:
1. Ohio has not had much problem with the portal until this year, but they were hit very hard this year
2. Not one person in the prognosticator thread expected to Ohio to be better than 4-3 at this point. Four people, including me expected Ohio to be 2-5. Thus, Ohio has dramatically exceeded my expectations at this point.
3. Not one person expected Ohio to be in the MACC after all the portal losses. The fact that they are still in the running is surprising.

I want to see Ohio continue to improve, game by game. I am hopeful that Ohio will finish 9-4, but I don't think that will get them into the MACC.

While true, Ohio now loses a tiebreaker to Miami, so Ohio probably needs to win all remaining games.

According to pre-season predictions on this board (agreed- not worth much - lol - and not statistically viable) we were most certainly going to lose to Miami. Conversely, we were/are expected to win 4 of the next 5. No one stated that we would be in the MACC

While watching other MAC teams play, I have seen some serious inconsistency all across the League. Throw in the existence of mounting injuries for everyone and it is hard to see a clear runaway winner at this point. The NIL and Transfer Portal phenomena are kind of fun, because having great athletes doesn't guarantee a great team performance as evidenced by the complete debacle that is happening in even a big-time school like Florida State.

I had no expectations coming into this season and still don't. Too many personnel changes. But so far, Ohio has lost to Syracuse, won two in a row, lost to UK, won two in a row, and lost to MOFO. If this pattern continues, we should beat Buffalo and Kent, lose to EMU, then beat Toledo and BSU. Something like that would mean 8-4, 6-2 which would be a good year, all things considered. Probably not good enough to get into the MACCG (I think a two-loss team will have a hard time getting to Detroit) but still not bad given all the personnel changes.

I agree with you. I am impressed that the team is playing as well as they are considering what happened with the portal. It seems to me that the staff did an admirable job getting a decent team out on the field. No MACCG, this year, but they are in a position to submit the typical 7-5/6-6 season.

I’m wondering like every year if 6-6 with no wins over teams with a winning record would get a bowl invite over other MAC teams.

How many bowl tie ins does the MAC have this year and what’s the chance of every 6-6 or even 1 or 2 5-7 teams get bowl bids?

Looks like the MAC has four primary tie-ins (Bahamas, Arizona, Spud, and Quick Lane) and two others from a list of seven. https://collegefootballnews.com/predictions/college-footb...

At the moment, the MAC has six teams with 4 or 5 wins, including Ohio. They're likely to make it to six wins, and some of the three-win teams could also get there, so five-win MAC teams likely won't get a bowl. Overall I count 40 teams already bowl eligible and another 54 with at least four wins. I think there are still 82 bowl slots plus the 12-team playoff, but I'm not sure about this will all work our. Some of the playoff teams will also wind up in bowls..

There are 35 bowls (70 teams) plus 12 teams in the CFP so the total slots are 82. I’m thinking there will be some 6-6 MAC team left out. There were 86 slots last year, so that has decreased.

82 teams. And LSU just gave coach Kelly a $500,000 bonus for the Tigers qualifying for a bowl with their 6th win.
Might this be the easiest 1/2 million dollars anyone has ever earned? And this is on top of his $9.5 million salary.

Nah the best contract belongs to Mark Stoops, who gets an extra year extension tacked onto his contract every time they win at least 6 games.

After all the portal hits, it was certainly possible that Ohio could have been competing with Kent for the bottom of the MAC. Thanks to the combination of a lot of depth and some new players from the portal, Ohio has fielded a competent team, so now we have the cyclical shifts from depression to elation to depression again that are common in sports. Ohio was going to be bad.... Hey, they beat S. Alabama, and CMU, so Ohio can win the MAC! Oh, no, they lost to Miami, it's all over...

Sometimes you have to remember to enjoy the good, and take the bad with the good. Ohio has five games left to enjoy, and I'm hoping for Ohio to win 3-4 of them, and then play in a bowl. Albin could get his 8 wins to extend his contract again, and if he does, he certainly deserves it.

Here's another good thought: It's unlikely that Ohio will be slammed as hard this year by the portal. Ohio doesn't have as many repeat starters who might think they have the chance to move up, and Ohio's backups will be faced with the stark reality that not everyone who goes into the portal will be able to find a new home. Thus, next year there will be far more continuity than there was this year. The world is not ending; it's just changing.

We had lots of defensive injuries going into South Alabama and statistically, their backup played better than Navarro.

2024...Let's Face the Facts

Our QB was just named 2nd team All-MAC and finished the season on a tear.

We had a transfer WR who may set the school's all-time single season receiving record and is a first-team All-MAC. We had a transfer RB who was named 2nd team All-MAC. Third-team All-MAC LB transferred in from Bucknell. 2nd team All-MAC Offensive Lineman that transferred in from Notre Dame College (no, not that Notre Dame).

Our defensive stop rate was top 20 in the country. Our scoring defense is 17th in the nation. I believe someone posted elsewhere we have not given up a TD in the first quarter all season. We have the 14th best rushing offense in the nation. This team seems far above average, especially for this conference. It also seems as though we have improved as the year has gone on.

I'm not just anticipating this MAC Championship, this is probably the best I've felt about one of our teams going into the championship in a while. I really believe this team can end the curse.

Oh...and we'll go to a bowl game. Let's hope it's after we have gotten that first MAC Title.

Being a realist, I can't imagine how Coach Albin could've fielded a better team than this given the defections he had.

(Figure the topic at the top of the page should be about this team and not complaining about posters or the system. We might do something historic.)
