Sears met with coaching staff on a Monday. They had developed a comprehensive plan to get him some money and, most important, publicity to aid in his plans to eventually enter the draft. He assured them he was all in. The next morning, Boals received a call from Chubb Hall advising him that Sears and his parents had just completed the paperwork to transfer. Never heard from him again.

Is this any worse than a coach signing an extension, saying he's committed to a program, and taking big-time bucks to leave? I'm not saying it's right, but it isn't like he signed a contract.

The portal is crazy- a Texas TE withdrew 22 minutes after he entered the portal. A record?

Idaho OL Tijada Cisse (Oakland, CA) transfers to Ohio. Nice looking tape. Bright kid who had offers from Yale, Columbia and Princeton out of high school.

I'd say it's exactly the same. Would you want him back, either?

Depends. What was he 20? I'm willing to forgive a bit with someone that age who is dealing with money for the first time. I wouldn't bring the coach back.

This is the type of kid we need. FCS playoff team. 9-4 record. This kid started as a freshman. Yep, he'll be a great addition to our returnees.

Imagine telling your parents you were turning down a scholarship to Yale to play FCS football in Idaho.

We'll be debating the Sears transfer until the end of time. This makes sense as to why he never acknowledged Bobcat Nation nor his teammates/coaching staff when he left, like virtually every transfer does across the nation. No b***s.

Problem is the Ivy League schools come with a giant price tag and no athletic scholarships. The ROI at those schools is off the chart but some kids can't afford them regardless of the "offer" that may have been presented.

It will be nice when the Roster finally catches up. There are a few players in the portal who have yet to be deleted, such as Quinn and Wilburn. In addition to them, it's not clear to me whether all the other players still listed on the roster have eligibility remaining. There are several still on the roster who I thought were done, such as Wiglusz, Watkins, Houston, and Reynolds. I know that there will be more changes to the roster after the spring portal period, but it would be nice for all the players who will definitely not be playing this fall to be gone. That will at least give us a chance to start to get some idea of what the team may look like this fall.

One thing we know is that Ohio still has room for a lot more transfers in, as do most of the teams in the MAC. Ohio currently has 11 more transfers out than in, so they presumably can add about 11 more players from the portal before they are done. The rest of the MAC still needs players, too. Here is what I see so far:
WMU 19 out, 8 in, -11 net
Ohio 18 out, 7 in, -11 net
NIU 13 out, 4 in, -9 net
Akron 18 out, 10 in, -8 net
Buffalo 12 out, 4 in, -8 net
CMU 11 out, 3 in, -8 net
Kent 16 out, 8 in, -7 net
BG 12 out, 5 in, -7 net
Miami 8 out, 2 in, -6 net
Ball State, 10 out, 7 in, -3 net
Toledo 8 out, 5 in, -3 net
EMU 11 out, 10 in, -1 net

I'm surprised as well. You wonder if someone needs a kick returner and was promising extra playing time on offense. His role on the team seemed to diminish this past season. After 2022 I thought he had the chance to be the next DL Knock. It never materialized.

He was already a grad student, right? Really, no reason to stuck around a sixth year in this situation…maybe have a D2 pick up a year of grad school or, if not, just enter the workforce. Was he a scholarship player?

We're sure losing a lot without bringing much in.

Even if he's just our KR, he was a good one.

It is possible that he just wanted to get on the field more. He can do that at another school like Mike mentioned. Probably at a lower level. No shame in that.

You are not wrong on this in anyway shape or form. I guess I also failed to realize he’d been at OHIO long enough to graduate. Regardless, quality young man from a quality family.

A good kick returner is turning into an oxymoron. Love to know what percentage of kicks are going into the end zone nowadays.

Correct. And many fair catches. A crazy stat is Ohio had 15 kick returns as a team on the season!

Last year they returned 15 kicks for 273 yards, an average of 18.2 yards. In 2023, they returned 56 kicks for 1115 yards, an average of 19.9 yards. Unfortunately, in 2023, many of those kicks were returned from the endzone, or deep in Ohio territory, and resulted in Ohio starting many drives from inside their 25 yard line. I'd love to see a stat for the average starting position for drives after kickoff. I'm pretty sure that Ohio started drives with significantly better field position in 2023 than they did in 2022.
