Seems shortsighted and silly to refuse to allow portal entrants to return to the team. ...

I'm not sure it's an active policy. If you want to roughly group players into categories, we can go with:
1. Players who are really good
2. Players who are fine, but not as good as they think
3. Players who aren't as good as expected

Players in the first group should have no difficulty moving up, and generally find a new home quickly, but they are a minority of the players in the portal. Rourke is an example of group 1. The fact that the offers he got only came from lower tier P5 schools, however, indicates that he is not at the absolute top of group 1.

Players in the third group are players mired in the depth chart, not getting much playing time. They are looking to move down because they want to play, even at a lower level, rather than being a backup. These are the majority of players in the portal. If they don't find a new home, they will be likely out of football. They are very unlikely to return to their old team.

Then there is group 2. They think they are going to move up, but once in the portal, don't find the interest, and have only the options of a lateral move, or perhaps returning to their existing team. If they want to return, with a new sense that they didn't have it so bad, I see no reason why they would automatically be rejected. If they had a terrible attitude to begin with, that was hurting team unity, the team might not want them back, however. I would think it was be a situational thing, not a cut and dried policy.

Since the majority of players in the portal are in group 3, most players who don't find a home will not return to their old team, but I would expect that some players in the second group will end up back on their old team. Personally, I put Bangura in the second group. He's a very good player, but not really a pro prospect, and may or may not be able to find a P5 team that wants him. His best options may end up being a lateral move, or returning to Ohio. We'll just have to wait and see how it develops.

Honestly, it's probably as much the player as it is the staff.

Imagine you announce to your bosses today that you're quitting and hoping to catch on with a bigger and better company... you dont... and then two weeks later are like... JK I loved you all along.

As an update... just 0.47% of players have withdrawn their name from the portal and returned. 7 players out of 1,500.

Last season it was 1.87%

51 players total out of 2,731.

Certainly, I doubt anyone is flat "refusing" - but there IS definitely something. You couldn't get 98.13% of this board to agree that the field is green.

Does your boss have objectives to hit and feel like you'd help along that path? If so, they may well have you back. There are companies out there that offer lifetime employment and allow alumni to return at any point.

I don't see the upside of catching feelings about it.

Makes perfect sense to me, and this is what I'd hope for. So long as our staff isn't taking a "you're dead to me" and applying some weird loyalty litmus test to the roster, I'm cool with it. Case-by-case and do what puts the best team on the field.

I'm not saying I don't agree, I'm just saying while you continue to act like I'm personally making these decisions that NINENTY NINE PERCENT of players DO NOT return. What do you attribute that to? My posts?

Take a deep breath, dude.

When I said "I don't see the upside of catching feelings about it" I wasn't talking about you; I was talking about the coaching staffs who don't let players return.

I'm suggesting what I think the best policy for our coaching staff to implement is. I have truly no idea why you think that has anything to do with you.

Your four posts addressing me directly, trying to get your adorable little jabs in that make no sense makes it pretty clear. LOL. Take a deep breath. Touch grass.

I replied to one post of yours, and we agreed on the point. Where were the jabs, exactly? Maybe the reason they don't make sense to you is that there weren't any jabs?

I truly have no idea what's up with all the caps locks and why you're all worked up. Beyond the fact that every third post of yours here is exactly this.

You're talking about what players and coaches do in practice. I'm saying what I think they should do. There's no inherent disagreement in those things, and they can exist at the same time. We both even agree with both points.

In other words: take a deep breath, dude.

Was watching a bit of the Montana - North Dakota State FCS final four game, and was curious how these teams are faring with the transfer portal.

Not sure if it's reliable or not, but according to On3, there's only a single player from the FCS final four teams in the portal right now. If that's true, says something about how players perceive winning a tournament, vs. winning a bowl game. Seems like a real tournament and potential championship is enough to keep players from the portal.

Whatever ends up left of the G5 over the next few years really needs to put together a compelling tournament with real stakes.

Like some new division between FCS and FBS. Why not? If ESPN can make a few bucks showing it, the NCAA will kiss their rears and create it. Look at the tropical storm Fiami and Appy played in yesterday. This painted logo turned into a mess of slippery sludge. But postpone the game? Of course not. ABC/ESPN (aka Disney) was already invested into showing football in that time slot.

Interesting. Another one that surprises with eligibility left. Classy move on his part to play yesterday. We'll miss him, but Kacmarek is an absolute beast. We'll be OK.

You have any idea how expensive it is to postpone a game, especially when both teams are traveling, you have issues with the venue and it's availability and all the staffing. It's just not something you do if you can help it. And whatever happened to playing football in the rain.

I figured there would be another rush of portal jumpers after the bowl game. I respect them for playing their ass off in the bowl game before doing it. Those are the guys I will remember fondly.

The guys turning down starting roles to move on are a bummer, but we’ll hopefully adapt. Will Kac is still here - I hope. Chase and Jacoby will be back. Praying no one gets in Rickey Hunt’s ear after one game but it wouldn’t surprise me if he left. I said it jokingly before the game and here we are. A real possibility.

The thing to keep in mind is that this isn't just an Ohio thing. The whole of college football is being turned upside down. The best players in FCS are trying to move up. The best of G5, and lower tier P5, too, probably, are looking to move up for NIL money. Meanwhile, non-starters in P5 and G5 are looking to move down to get playing time. Things will sort themselves out in time, but what the new norm will be, I have no idea. It won't look like it used to, that's all I know. If I had to take a guess, my guess would be that in the end, it will become increasingly clear that football has nothing to do with the core mission of universities, and the teams will be spun off as professional football teams.

The vicious cycle that is the transfer portal. Makes you wonder if we will get better HS recruits because other P5/G5 school will be focusing more on portal players.

Mason Williams looked legit in the few games he played. Also have a few stud TEs in the 2024 recruiting class.
