It should be an interesting week for the MAC. This week could easily be labeled the MAC vs B1G week as Ohio is at Minnesota, WMU is at OSU, BG is at Purdue, CMU is at Michigan State and Ball State is at Northwestern. In addition thereto, UMass is at Notre Dame, NIU is at Boston College, Marshall is at Kent State, Nevada is at Buffalo, Army is at EMU, Akron is at ULL, Miami is at WKU and Toledo hosts Arkansas State (the Rockets are looking to sweep D-I/FBS schools whose names start with the word "Arkansas").

FWIW, here are the Vegas lines, sorted by most and least likely for a MAC win.
MAC Favored:
Army at EMU -2.5
BG -1.5 at Purdue
Nevada at SUNY (Buffalo) -1

MAC Slight Underdog:
NIU at Boston College -4.5
Marshall -7 at Kent State
Arkansas State at Toledo -7.5
Akron at Louisiana-Lafayette -8.5
Ohio at Minnesota -10.5

MAC Heavy Underdog
Ball State at Northwestern -19.5
Miami at W. Kentucky -20.5
CMU at Michigan State -27
UMass at Notre Dame -29
WMU at Ohio State -31.5

I'd say that if the MAC can get 4 or more wins this week, that's not bad.

Did OHIO knock out Marshall's Birdsong or did he get benched--didn't see him in a box score from Saturday?

How about Eastern--have they improved year over year?

The word in Herdistan is that he injured his shoulder playing us, and that's why he couldn't make any throws downfield, so they have gone to a true freshman as starter, who some say should have been the starter from day 1.

I have seen Purdue play this year (Marshall) and they are terrible. Only thing they could do was run the ball, if they have to pass (as in Marshall game) they are totally lost. BG should beat them. A lot of teams in the MAC would beat them. Purdue another team that jumped to quick on the hot coach, just like Pittsburg and Illinois.

Something else of interest (from Ralph Russo's column: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/week-4-red-raider-revenge-ls... )--

MAC REUNIONS

There are 13 former Mid-American Conference coaches currently coaching at other schools, including some of the most successful in the business: Alabama's Nick Saban (Toledo); Ohio State's Urban Meyer (Bowling Green); Notre Dame's Brian Kelly (Central Michigan) and Missouri's Gary Pinkel (Toledo).

Five former MAC coaches will be facing MAC teams this week, in most cases hoping to avoid being upset.

Western Michigan is at No. 1 Ohio State.

Massachusetts is at No. 6 Notre Dame.

Ohio is at Minnesota, coached by Jerry Kill (formerly Northern Illinois)

Northern Illinois, coming off a close loss at Ohio State, is at Boston College, coached by Steve Addazio, whose tenure at Temple started when the Owls were in the MAC.

The other game is Bowling Green at Purdue, but there is a twist on that one. The Falcons are the favorites against Darrell Hazell's Boilermakers.

BG held up as a favorite and beat a really bad by B1G standards Purdue team. They join Toledo as MAC teams with 2 P5 wins. NIU is down 7 at the start of the 4th. Last week there were so many close calls where teams picked lower in the MAC almost upset teams picked higher up in better leagues. This week some of the teams picked higher have their chance. NIU and Ohio need to pull out actual wins today.

Tough day so far. OU drops a heartbreaker, and Northern Illinois falls by 3 at Boston College. Nice win for BG over Purdue. Kent State is headed to second OT against Marshall.

Eastern Michigan is getting housed by Army, and Buffalo falls at home to Nevada. Miami drubbed by WKU, and others lose big (as expected) to OSU, Mich. State and ND.

Marshall beats Kent in double-OT.

For the MAC the last two weeks have had wayyy too many losses by 4 or less points. They needed to win a few more of those.

Akron looks like they will trounce ULL, but they've had 10 penalties for 87 yds through the first three quarters. ULL has 9 for 111 yds -- 19 penalties for 198 yds, and still a quarter to go.

So only BG and UT have Power Five wins for the MAC and they both have two each? Am I missing any other team? I know there have been several closes misses but I thought we might see another team step up and get one too.

This league historically must lead the Group of Five in close-but-no-cigar losses to the Power Five, eh? (Don't bother checking; I'm probably wrong. It just FEELS that way.)

I believe EMU is the only team remaining with a Power Five opponent left on the schedule and that's a game with LSU, and you know that's not gonna happen. So unless a MAC team gets pitted with a Power Five team in a bowl, it's going to stay with only BG and UT. This is another reason why I wish Ohio had a much better non conference schedule and had one more Power Five opponent on it because as we proved vs Minnesota, we could win one of these games. I really felt the MAC as a whole was going to win a few more of these games than just four this year. But I am surprised it was only two teams that won all four of those games. Congrats to BG and UT for representing the MAC so well though.

The MAC lost 6 games to P5 team by 7pts or less, 4 by a FG.

I know we don't like to talk about morale victories, but there's something to be said for those close losses.
