Don't know about Ohio,but Vedder has been interviewed on the N.Y.C. CBS News radio station quite a bit lately.
He was making comments about the Rutgers situation with the arrest/expulsion of several current and former palyers as well as the arrest/suspension the reinstatment of their top reciever.

I love Bobcats sports as much as the next guy but what he has to say about higher-education costs is not wrong.

The problem is that too many posters get the message confused with the messenger. Many folks have some very good things to say but other folks just can't get by who is saying it.

Not sure what you mean by saying "...trying to make himself an authentic source." The man has done a huge amount of research on the cost of higher education that goes back many years. He is constantly sought out for his views.

I also think he knows a bit more about the athletics situation at Rutgers than you think.

I would just say that there are different ways to present a message and some people have not figured that out yet.

We have to ask what presuppositions people bring to their analysis and discussions. Part of this is a matter of values...those who support athletics have an emotional commitment to college sports because it helps create a sense of identify and also it's just entertaining. We also point to some data suggesting benefits to universities.

Rich Vedder brings a different set of values to his analysis. He's entirely concerned with a rational approach to creating value in the private and public sectors. He thinks the costs of financing collegiate athletics exceeds the value created. He just has a different set of values. So, his conclusions based on his values may be rational, but some of us will still disagree because we bring different values.

Jeff, as cost has escalated the way they have the past 20 years, Dr. Vedder's view becomes more relevant to many. I love my sports, but there is a tipping point.

Many great colleges and universities have continued to grow and prosper without buying into the big time college athletics model. When a college is identified by it's sports teams first I'd say that school is past the tipping point of what college is supposed to be about. Take osu for example. If you played word association with the man on the street and you said ohio state chances are that they would say football. If that's what you want, fine. But if I said OU I'd hope the other person would say something non-sports related and certainly something other than party school. As to what they would say, I'm not sure.

BTW, If anyone has Netflix they might want to check out "Schooled: The Price of College Sports." It raises some interesting moral/financial/legal questions around college athletics.

The sometimes incomprehensible, and often stream of consciousness/psychedelic/beat posts (albeit often knee-jerk, rote, and abbreviated) have kinda grown on me. The Kerouac/Burroughs of BA.......
