This year there weren't floats, just banners. Plenty of businesses and candidates. An awful lot to endure between bands.
I decided not to march in the Alumni band this year due to the stupid parade route. It's the first time since my first Ohio Homecoming in 1987 that I've ever watched the parade. It was eye opening from the fact that McDavis and his handpicked parade consultants did not seek input from the Active or Alumni bands on the parade route either when the parade was moved in 2012 or this year. Yet, the bands are clearly the features of a parade made up of mainly student organizations walking behind a bed sheet they drew some 'theme' on. I did enjoy the Singing Men of Ohio and maybe a couple other groups did some entertaining, but mostly just watching people walk by.

They clearly put the active band at the beginning and alumni band at the end to avoid people skipping out on the rest of the parade. I really think it's sad that the bands have had no say in the parade route changes, yet they are pretty much the features of the parade. I'd kind of like to see where the parade would be if the bands just said, "No..we're not marching that." and then organize with uptown businesses to put on their own shows.
Considering that it appeared to be the largest alumni band ever, with some players not even having instruments(!), I'd say the route change was not a major consideration.
Not even close to the largest. I would say the largest was actually in 2012 when they moved the route off of North Court St. It was HUGE that year! This was the year they honored Dr. Socciarelli. There were actually a number of complaints that year regarding the new route going up the hill on Union. The argument was made that many Alumni Band members were going to return that year in order to honor Dr. Socciarelli, some of whom may have difficulty with the hill. To my knowledge there was no consideration given to this. Even though the Alumni Band did have a large turn out for this parade. There were some who opted out because of the hill.

People come to the parade for one reason and one reason only - to see the two bands. They don't play, no one is coming to see a bunch of groups promoting their social and political agendas.

Why are there no longer the high school bands of Athens, Nelsonville and other local schools marching in the parade? Too big of gap now between active oneten and oldies. Two or three HS bands would add to the bookends. I also miss the Republican wagon with the Elvis impersonator belting out some live toons--did he retire or did the People's Republic of Athens or the Administration put the nix to the opposition party?

I liked the Irish Dancing, the engineering department bikes and the baton twirlers. It was interesting to see the International Students participate and have a routine ready for the judges.

Would be neat to see the Basketball teams walk by.

Give them basketballs to dribble as they do so, and I'm on board.

I thought the Marching 110 was very subdued (almost boring). In fact, I thought their show at halftime was less entertaining than any I've seen in a long time. Different director?
Nope. Same director since '96. I suppose one of the great things about art is that intelligent people can disagree about what they like or what they consider "good." I've seen two games this season (Marshall and Miami... funny, I guess I only show up for rivalries) and have been as impressed as always with the 110. Particularly, I thought their sound was jaw dropping when they followed the Marshall band at halftime, first game of the season. That was a pretty great moment, IMO.
