I'd really like to go back and look at what Boo and Theo3 and or even Bowser and Everson did in the way of running. Seems like they were not banged up like our QBs have been the last 3-4-5 years. Is it the pistol that is offensive? The personnel themselves? Or, something else? All I know is something sure ain't working.
Those QBs did have injuries, too. T3 had his collarbone broken on a sack by Ohio State, and Everson had a sprained ankle against Akron in 2006.
Here's a breakdown of what type of play the injury occurred on, and whether the
foe was flagged for 15 yards in the process (implying it was not a "clean hit"):
2005 - none
2006 - Everson's ankle - don't recall
2007 - no
2008 - T3's Collarbone - pass play, 15 yard penalty
2009 - Edit---- Boo tore Labrum versus U.Conn
2010 - no
2011 - no
2012 - TT's upper body injury - clean hit on a run
2013 - no
2014 - Vick's knee - pass play, 15 yard penalty, well after the ball was thrown
2015 - Vick's elbow - I believe it was on a sack
2015 - Vick's left wrist - recovering a fumble on a pass play
2015 - Vick's ankle - don't recall
2015 - Sprague's upper body injury - run play, hit well out of bounds, penalty
So, most of the injuries were passing, not running, and at least 3 of 8 injuries were not "clean hits". Since Ohio throws the ball a lot more out of the pistol, and since most of the injuries were while passing, I'd say that yes, the pistol has something to do with the extra QB injuries, but even before the pistol, it did happen.
It's a completely different formula for college and pros. I calculated his NFL passer rating to be 91.1, which is still very good.
It was 115.5 in the first four games, when Ohio was running the ball capably, but only 72.9 since the running game got shut down.
