I don't know about anyone else but it's now been about 3 maybe 4 years where we have experienced what appears to be an inordinate number of injuries which we are all frustrated about. Frank has stated that these things tend to balance out over time. Well how much time should we expect for our situation to balance out? I am growing weary with this situation and am loosing patience. I know Frank has tried numerous approaches to help, yet nothing seems to be working.
OUCH!

It's called changing your recruiting, partially.

I realize a MAC program cannot stockpile talent like P5 schools but we are not bringing in the quality of athletes that can step up and in and perform. Frank has not built a program for next man up. His program built is we are paper thin and if someone goes down our season falls apart.

I do think recruiting has been part of it. Ohio needs to do a better job of identifying high school recruits with hidden injuries. All too often they have had recruits report with injuries.

The thing is, EVERY team is dealing with injuries, some just more than others. Ohio is not unique in this regard. Further, we haven't suffered any that were crippling to us like some other teams have. If you have a star QB and he goes down, then yes, that's very tough to overcome. But losing a guy for a few games and getting him back, or having some depth issues because of guys being banged up is common place in football. Losing starter after starter for the season or having a couple star players out for the year is a different story. But that's not happening to Ohio. We're starting to use the injury excuse as a crutch. Again.

Some would argue that a guy that was MAC defensive player of the week multiple times this year and last would be considered a star. In any case, the offense hasn't had many serious injuries other than at QB and Papi, but let's look at the defense:
Tautuaiki out
Styles playing hurt
Bass out
Polling out (but cleared for next week!)
Brown playing hurt
Johnson playing hurt
Moore playing hurt
Carpenter playing hurt
Smart out

That's a fairly large list, but what is worse is that all of the top for linebackers are listed. Linebacker was a huge strong point going into the season, and was a key reason that the defense was so effective early. It's gone from being a huge strength to a major weak point.

While I certainly agree that injuries can put a damper on a team's season, I am more inclined to blame mediocre recruiting at this point. What I get out of these second-half collapses the last three years is that we have a solid 22, but not enough depth beyond that 22. At one time, I wanted to believe that the injuries were the reason behind the slumps and that the Bobcats were going to return to being a MAC Championship-caliber team soon. It just hasn't happened. At this point, we just don't have solid depth and it's a recruiting issue.

And, the very good teams overcome their injuries. Northern Illinois loses their starting QB and a starting wide receiver and still are able to beat Toledo AT Toledo.

It seems that in quite a few cases we end up with guys who have known medical issues like Tettleton, Duckworth etc and you could argue Carrie who had little hs experience because of a medical problem. Some work out, some not so much.
I'm guessing a lot of high school players play with lingering injuries, but play anyway. You can get by with that more in hs than in college.
I knew a guy who was recruited and signed at Air Force, who within a year here had shoulder surgery on both shoulders. He just played through it in high school.

How do you find out about those hidden injuries, if the athlete doesn't share it?

This is a growing issue and some schools are fighting back despite the negative publicity by revoking scholarships to those who deceive.

Right, but Poling wasn't lost for the year, he's played in 7 games already and is expected back, likely next week. An example I was trying to make woukd be like last year when BG lost Matt Johnson in the opener and he was out for the year. That was a huge loss for them. Ohio really only lost Mangen this year for the season and that wasn't a devastating blow at all. Poling and many of the guys we have who are injured have played in most of our games this year and will be back. They're banged up, not out for the year with an injury and they didn't miss the entire season.
