Had a short conversation about MAC football with an O$U grad the other day. He called MAC players "the guys who couldn't make it" at a bigger school. My response was that no, it's just that MAC players play for the love of the game and not to audition for the NFL. Elliott's comments after the game yesterday just sort of made my point. As an aside, if he's looking to be used "better" calling out the coaches in the press is a piss poor way of getting what he wants.

Anyone else notice that there was no delay of game penalty called on the MSU kicker when OSU called the timeout and he kicked the ball anyway? My, what an uproar that would have caused if MSU was pushed back and then missed the FG (not to mention the second tough call to go against MSU, INCLUDING the one vs. MINN.).
Yes, I noticed and the camera caught Coach Meyer watching the ball's flight and perhaps waiting for a flag.

In our game, reliable sources indicate that the ref yelled to our kicker "don't kick the ball."

I call BS on that source.

You also called bs on the video that showed the kick was wide left.

It was not a straight on video and the Star-Tribune reporter said it would have been good. He had at least as good an angle as that camera. From my vantage point in the stands it look good, too. None of those were the proper angle to tell for sure. So, I didn't call BS on the camera shot, I just said it was not definitive. I saw a FG called good in a game yesterday where the camera angle made it look left by more than a good yard, obviously camera angles can be deceiving. That was my only point on that one. But, why would an official tell the kicker not to kick?

Because he was a good official and basically tried to help the kid not get a technical. Proactive officials help kids all the time if they can.

Alan, I just got it from a better source than yours that the official did not say any such thing. I'll PM with the information on my source on a confidential basis.

We have an official that occasionally posts here. Perhaps he will weigh in. I can see a big problem with an official directing a kicker not to kick on the expectation that a time out will be called. What if the time out, for whatever reason, is not called. Officials must not interject themselves into the game. JMHO.

It's a bad cycle. Most people in the state and country, even our own alumni, don't consider the MAC to be 'real' division 1 football. This idea is furthered by the national media 'BCS vs non BCS' or 'power vs group of'. It sucks! MAC schools clearly have enough alumni to have similar resources, but they are mostly content to root for a 'winner', essentially not giving us a chance. :/

So now you see, now you get it: It's another reason that I push for us to be a program that doesn't get destroyed against the middle and top MAC teams. 'cause as long as that keeps happening, even a lot of OHIO fans won't hold OHIO as their prime football rooting interest.

Now, should we be in the MAC title game and, should we win it, the year following such MACC could change a lot of heads.

We gotta change if things are going to change.

Fun Fact: More MAC players have been drafted in the top 10 in the NFL Draft over the past three years than Big Ten players

Yes and no when you consider that less than 1 in 4 people in Ohio actually have a college degree. They have to root for someone.
That does not even make sense to me.....in a state where you have two PRO franchises that no one roots with the passion and obnoxiousness as tO$U, I am always amazed by my undegreed friends from Marion,Mt Gilead, Cardington, Sandusky and other corners of the state that still root for the Buckeyes even after they have lived in Napa and regularly attend SF/Oakland FB games and travel all over following Duke Basketball. I Never have figured that out as they have no ties to COlumbus or any of the branch campuses save for this weird cult following of the Bucks. Some of those friends also work at Marysville Honda and still can't give a reason why the Bucks colors are found in their houses, choice of cars/sneakers/cell phone cases and anything imaginable. Not having a degree you would think they would be more likely to go the pro route rather than taking their Wal Mart alumni status to an unreal type of fandom...and you will rue the day if you say anything negative about "their" Bucks as you will be reminded how good tO$U is everytime you see or talk to them. Then again......maybe you are onto something with the uneducated masses and sheepdom....problem is...there are lots of states where the same ratio of non degreed folk is true and they do not have masses flocking to a local college to get their saturday afternoon worship on the tube out of the way.

A classic case of overcompensation. They have no real connection to the university, so they overcompensate with this bizarre over-the-top fandom of the football team. It's a stark contrast to my one OSU alum friend up here. He has nothing on his car, wears a cap or a sweatshirt occasionally but jokes that "you never wear more than one item of clothing unless you're in the stadium and never wear college stuff while flying and going through airports."

I don't think it's all that unique to OSU though. Subway domers, Wal-Mart Wolverines. It's more of a bandwagon thing, but when USC is doing well the non-alum fanbase is one of the most obnoxious in the country. They just have the decency to disappear when the program goes into a bad spell. Hell, I would bet that the non-alum following for Wisconsin is every bit as pervasive. It's not uncommon to see truck drivers with Bucky Badger mud flaps.

To go off on a tangent, I've often wondered that the more competitive it becomes to get into OSU, that maybe they'll start pissing more and more people off and lose them as fans. Hard to root for Buckeyes when they rejected your daughter. Hard to stay a fan of OSU while attending a MAC school because your beloved Buckeyes slipped you the thin envelope. At least I think it would be, but who knows with some people.
