A few games ago we thought WMU was a great team.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THEM NOW.

Up until last nights CMU victory, WMU had not beat any team with a winning record! And CMU is sitting @ 6-5.

WMU IS IN REAL TROUBLE, THEY HAVE TOLEDO NEXT UP @ TOLEDO AND COULD EASY MISS RECEIVING A BOWL BID.

If they loose next week and end up @ 6-6 after loosing their last 3 games they will more that likely not receive a bowl bid, IMHO. Talk about a disastrous year, WOW.

Not to take away from your general point, but we are 7-4.

Sure WMU's only 6-5 but unfortunately they are better than Ohio. It's not like Ohio's game against them was a nail-biter. 42-17 pretty much says it all. And they've played a harder schedule than Ohio has. They have to play CMU, Toledo and NIU in the MAC West. I hate to see what Ohio's record would be if they played in the West rather than the East. I don't think it would be 7-4.

To me WMU is underscoring the ill wisdom of overly ambitious non-conf scheduling. Playing AT Michigan State and Ohio State in the opening weeks, playing them tough but losing both makes achieving a stellar W-L record a long shot. As has been posted above, those losses could cost WMU a bowl bid if it finishes 6-6.

Plus their OOC schedule was MichSt, O$U and 7-2 Georgia Southern -- one of the best offensive teams in 1A. Most MAC teams would be looking at 2-8/3-7 with their schedule.

Per TeamRankings, they apparently aren't eliminated from the chase for the MAC yet, though their probability is now down to .6%. Obviously they would need Ohio to beat NIU, plus they have to beat Toledo. I'm not sure what else would need to happen, though.

I don't think WMU can win the West this year. If we beat NIU, WMU beats Toledo and CMU loses to EMU, it would be a three-way tie among NIU, WMU and Toledo. NIU would have the tiebreaker because they beat both Toledo and WMU. If it becomes a four-way tie with CMU, NIU and WMU would be 2-1 in the head-to-heads (Toledo and CMU would be 1-2), and NIU would have the tiebreaker because of last night's win.

WMU beat Ohio 49-14.

The five losses WMU has experienced are to teams that are a combined 42-8.

The four losses Ohio has experienced are to teams that are a combined 23-19.

Why is this thread even a thing?

The real question here is how does an athletic director from a power five conference justify bringing in a 6-6 MAC coach with elite aquatic navigation technique.

I think Mike had it right, and this is a thread for discussing scheduling. In the longstanding discussion, one side has argued that scheduling top teams boosts fan interest and attendance, while the other side has said that scheduling games where you have a chance to win boosts fan interest and attendance. This thread seems like a logical place where that discussion could resume.

I guess from a scheduling standpoint if you are in the MAC West you should schedule like we do. Western scheduled themselves to a 6-6 7-5 record simply because their out of conference schedule was so difficult and they play in the West.

Hypothetical: What would our record be if we played in the West with WMUs OOC schedule plus BG, Buffalo and Miami as our East games?

I feel like there's a middle ground between the suicidal schedules of Western, Akron (Oklahoma and Pitt) and Bowling Green (Tennessee, Maryland, Memphis, Purdue) and something more marshmallowy.

I like what Buffalo did with Albany, Penn State, Florida Atlantic and Nevada. Big boy program, walkover, two non-power fives with recent success. Toledo always does an incredible job scheduling games that look impressive, but ones they can win. Arkansas and Iowa State are right in that scheduling sweet spot.

Hypothetically? No way really to tell, obviously, but my opinion

vs MSU: L
at GaSouthern: L
vs Murray State: W
at OSU: L
vs CMU: ?
at WMU: L
vs Miami: W
at EMU: W
vs Ball State: W
vs BGSU: L
at NIU: ?
at Toledo: L

The only two games I question are CMU and NIU. CMU because I haven't seen them play very much and NIU because they play a similar style of ball to Ohio. It's a toss up. I just don't think there is any way Ohio stops the running game of Georgia Southern or offensive attack of Toledo. Even then, the record sits at 4-6.

+1

how is losing to NIU, a team that is 44-3 in conference play since 2010, validation that WMU is a weak team that we should have beat?

I still think WMU is a solid team. They played a heck of a non conference schedule, the MAC West is pretty tough at the top and they also had to play BG from the East. Plus, as mentioned, they still have a slim shot to win the West if it becomes a 4 way tie I believe. In some years a team like WMU this year would have been tops in the MAC. I'd say WMU is still the 4th best team in the MAC this year behind BG, UT and NIU (BG and NIU already beat WMU, UT has yet to play them). WMU already beat CMU and OU.

OhioBobcat....You may be right, however, bowl bids look at W-L record as well as how they played down the stretch, i.e. how were they trending at the end of the season.
If my wife would agree with me I would consider a large wager on TOLEDO next week.
I believe the spread will be in the 8-10pt range.

With all the new CUSA and SBC programs out there that will accept a 1 for 1, Ohio shouldn't have to continue to put FCS schools on the schedule. They can play Charlotte or New Mexico State for an easy win. Try to have the biggest schools that will make their way to Peden Stadium on the schedule.

I agree with you that WMU has a solid team. But to me its overly ambitious non-conf schedule is working against its securing a bowl bid.

Huh? I think you lost me. You're saying Ohio should give up the FCS games and go back to 5 game home schedules?

I get what he's saying. You can schedule 1 for 1s with the low level FBS schools and work the schedule to still get 6 games at home. It shouldn't be that difficult. So instead of getting an FCS at home every year Ohio should be able to schedule a NMSU, South Alabama, Georgia State, etc. while also playing one of those on the road.

71 Bobcat, I still think Western is a pretty damn nice team that over-scheduled themselves to the point where they just might not get a bowl. I still think that they may get a bowl at 6-6, but could be a wrong. Hopefully Ohio will not schedule ourselves out of any chance to have a winning season like Western has done. A good lesson to be learned by looking at their season.
