...that I thought might scuttle Ohio's chances for a win:

* With Ohio up 7-0, Smith's first quarter fumble that NIU turned into a troublingly easy TD.

* Sprague's injury.

* Oullette's third quarter drop that ended a what had been a strong drive.

* NIU's scoring drive that had me wondering if Ohio was running out of gas.

* Heitzman's drop of a pass that looked like a sure TD.

* With 1:45 to go, the imminent onside kick.

Resilience is an oft-used word in sports, but Ohio's resilience - with dashes of alertness (Berger's run with the blocked FG) and determination (Oulette's vault) - won the day/night.

Agreed on all of those. I was thinking, "Uh oh here we go again." On a side note, I can't remember the last time I saw a blocked FG advanced by the kicking team.

Mike, add to the list our past experience in Detroit when we jumped out to a big lead in the first half, only to have the Huskies come roaring back in the second half! I was trying hard to not have flash-backs last night !

Despite all those things, there was a serene calm at my house because for once anyway, the fates appeared to be in OUr favor.

To wit,

Starting QB sitting by motionless and speechless as NIU munted a comeback

NIU running some while allowing the clock to run on their final TD drive,.

A drop kick? Really?.

Let's not forget our sack at the very end of the 2nd quarter which produced a fumble. When a LB attempts to pick it up & run with it, I'll let it slide, but when a 300lb defensive tackle attempts to pick it up and run with it, vs. falling on it to secure a rare red-zone possession, I gotta cringe. Instead, NIU recovers & avoids what could have been a true game changer.

In a night of wonderful, team, team, team play, this stood out as a momentary me, me, me, event.

Who punched it out? These defenders are special. All MAC recognition will not be at the level deserved. The West will dominate, but, we know how it goes when the coaches use so many players.

You had to know the night was going to go well for the Bobcats when NIU blocks a FG attempt and Ohio not only recovers but takes it down close to the 10 yard line. Rarely does that ever happen.

Kudos to Kent Berger for having the presence of mind to pick the ball up.

Maybe the biggest play of the night. What a momentum changer.

My biggest cringe was how we played soft on NIU's last drive. They had 90 yds to go and we let them do it in less than 3 mins. NIU blocked the blitzes well, but we were letting them get 8-10 yds a clip early in the drive, which set up one or two big plays. It gave them some confidence.

I don't think I've ever seen that happen. Didn't even realize the rule would allow the kicking team to advance if ball was still behind line of scrimmage.

I can't recall if I've ever seen that happen before, either. If I have, it was long ago.

As I posted in the game thread, I was hoping to see another thing in the game that I've never seen before, a fair-catch free kick. It was my understanding that after a fair catch, the receiving team has the option to try a free kick for a field goal from the point of the catch. The fair catch with 11 seconds left in the first half was at the NIU 48, meaning it would have been a 58 yard field goal. That's long, but not impossible, especially with no rush.

Apparently it was not an option, however, the wiki says:
"The fair catch kick is a rule at the professional and high school levels of American football that allows a team that has just made a fair catch to attempt a free kick"

and also:
"The fair catch kick is not legal in National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) football; the NCAA abolished the fair catch in 1950, but re-added it a year later. When the fair catch returned to the rulebook, however, the option to attempt a kick after the fair catch was removed."

What about the drop-kick onside kick? I didn't know you could do that.
