Can you explain to the BA multitudes exactly whet happened on the call on that run back that ended up with OHIO keeping the ball after a fumble. The official muttered something about the foul occurring before the fumble, but said that the foul was against the Redchickens after first saying it was against OHIO, which on returns is almost always the case that the return team is at fault. The whole thing left me totally baffled.

Simple, you have to get the ball with “clean hands”. Miami committed a foul during the PSK portion, which means possession is assumed once the kick untouched is pass the LOS. Their run back is then wiped out and penalty enforcement rules are enforced.

I get that but the penalty on Miami was never mentioned before the review. What was the penalty they committed?

Illegal blindside block. It was very clear in the replay.

Why was the kicking team blocking?

The fact that they were blocking illegally to the back so far from the actual play points to the answer being discipline issues/mental lapse. That whole series of events was confusing, but on the replay it was an obvious penalty on Miami.

A question the (TV) broadcast crew asked too.

On the broadcast, and in my living room, the assumption was that WE had committed a block in the back on top of the fumble. The broadcast crew actually assumed at first that the Ref had just named the wrong team at first, until they went to the replay and (as noted up-thread) observed a very clear blindside block. The Miami player's thinking really 0wasn't clear (could have been ill-discipline, could have just been a collision)

Good question, but they did. Was looking to knock a gunner off and he did.

In person, it was quite confusing. First the foul was on Ohio and the officials seemingly missed the fumble at the end of the play.

On the replay, it was clear that Fiami had an illegal blindside block. Ohio accepted the penalty and pushed Fiami back and made them re-do the punt.

Yes, in person, we did not have access to the announcers trying to explain what happened. Thanks everybody, especially BTC, I think I now understand what happened and why.

I re-watched the game last night. The initial ruling on the field announcement was that the runner was down and the penalty was on return team 32. It was a clearly a fumble on the play. But then the penalty was changed to kicking team 43. Not sure how you go from 32 to 43. But the replay clearly shows it was the right call. Right before Miami went to re-punt they stopped for another review. That may have been to make sure they had ball marked correctly.

The second stoppage was yes to make sure the enforcement was correct and to confirm to Martin because it was announced improperly on the field.

The fumble can be easy to lose on a play like that, because you don’t have it all boxed in and you can get blocked out just to the nature of the play. That’s why we have replay, and there it worked. As for the foul announcement, having a post kick foul like that on the kicking team is very rare and probably caught them off guard. Again, fixable and was fixed.

You're all forgetting that these were MAC refs. I'm surprised they didn't rule it a safety.
