Albin definitely has a better W/L pedigree than any of your previous coaches, but there hasn’t been a whole lot of patience with such a new program. Time will tell.
I think Charlotte is interesting. I am from Cincinnati and remember how pathetic the team was for a long time. Guys with winning HC records like Mike Gottfried, Watson Brown, Tim Murphy and Dave Currey all came in with big plans but they continued to flop and flop. Unlike Charlotte, however, Cincinnati somehow managed to get into the new Big East FB because of its basketball and then went on a nice streak with Dantonio, Brian Kelly and Butch Jones to rebuild their fortunes. I guess that’s the type of blueprint Charlotte can shoot for.
>patience
We've really only had 3 meaningful coaches.
1st: 6 seasons
2nd: 4 seasons
3rd: 2 seasons
Biff got the axe because, aside from losing seasons, he did a lot of stuff that made him look terrible to the AD and fans. I'll spare the details unless you're interested. But this season was our hardest SoS ever, and we went 5-7. He'd still be our coach if he didn't make such an ass of himself. Also, fwiw, he publicly invited being fired if he didn't live up to his hype.
I honestly think we've been fairly patient. We (fans) were warned it would be a long slog when we were working to get the program started.
>Cincinnati
This is a brutal example because we used to be conference rivals in CUSA when our league was relatively stacked and Charlotte basketball was still NCAA Tournament level competitive. I randomly picked the 2001 CUSA bball tournament so I could review the conference composition at that time, and it happens to be that Charlotte and Cinci played in the final, Charlotte winning.
We got left behind because we didn't have football despite pleadings from the fanbase. It has been very amusing to read grumblings about your AD, Julie, because our longtime AD at that time was named Judy. She is infamous in our fanbase. Many resent her. She resisted football the entire way. I was a very active part of the student/alumni initiative to get us a football team. She told us starting football was a "fantasy". I'm happy/proud enough we have what we have.
Look at this list of former CUSA members (ca. 2001), and think where they are now:
Cincinnati - B12
Houston - B12
Louisville - ACC
Marquette - BE
DePaul - BE
Memphis, Tulane, USF - AAC, but receiving P5 interest.
Rather than following them, we got kicked into the A10 once CUSA upped its football commitment. I HATED being in the A10, and our basketball program went in the tanks. We are desperately playing catchup now, and this new NIL/portal/mercenary era has only made things worse. We can hope to follow Cincinnati's route.
