He's listed as the associate head coach. It would make sense.

That would be the likely answer.

He would be my #1 on the wish-list at this point as well.

Who is likely headed to Charlotte with TA? Do you think Smith is a candidate for HC?

I honestly don’t even have a gauge. If it were going to Tulsa or Purdue or something… I would say Hauser, Isphording… some of the older guys who have been around… but UNCC…? For comparable pay.. and what is likely a harder uphill battle… I don’t know.

I think Brian hires his former roommate at OC, former Washington State and Hawaii HC Nick Rolovich. Promotes Faanes to DC. Tremayne probably stays on with a co title. Think a lot more assistants will stay than what is somewhat normal, just the idea of going from 30 wins in 3 years to a total rebuild… and a total rebuild that is still a G5 doormat… K.O.D for a young coach.

I'm not an insider but seeing what happened at other schools, would wager that he has already interviewed to be the new head coach. In this case, would save the $$ of a coaching search and preserve continuity.

I think most people would be fine with his getting promoted.

DE coach Mattix has D coordinator experience but Faanes is listed as an associate DC so that makes sense.

Having an OC with experience would be important.

Hopefully hiring Smith will keep some of the current players and coaches in Athens. No matter what we will still need to lean on the portal a little. That turned out in a good big way this year.

The portal will be ripe with a record crowd this season.

I think that everybody on this board needs to accept that the portal is going to be full of players every year from now on, regardless of what’s going on with the coaching staff. This isn’t a problem unique to us or even just G5 schools. It just is what it is now.

You will see less on that front after the 105 roster limits kick in, simple fact, is there will be 20% fewer players playing college football.

I could easily see Adonis, Mason Williams, Shay and Hunt in the portal. Hoping not but Mason helped himself in MAC title game and Shay and Adonis had great years! Like I said, I hope not!!!!

Like Ive said in the past, I’m fine with that. What I WANT is two years. Give me two years. Let’s get you some jewelry and get you on your way. Whether that’s graduation or P5. We should be the first stop for high schoolers, and the last stop for former P5’ers looking to prove they still got it.

Wigs.
Owen.
Tyus.
Parker.

Transfers… are you listening…? Come have a 1K season.

You began seeing it with the COVID years…the high school players being underrecruited. You will really see it now. I read KJ Jefferson is getting a 7th year. We have a ton of 25 year olds not good enough for NFL draft hanging around playing against 18-19 year olds and getting paid NFL money to do it.

And football isn’t even the worst sport in this regard. Baseball roster limits have resulted in some crazy stories.

Yep! Baseball will be interesting, because some programs will lose 15 or more roster spots.

Don’t want to threadjack about baseball lol. Lots to post later.

I will say, there will soon be a ton of P4 football talent dropping down. Lots of these guys turned down FBS/FCS offers to walk on. Add in normal over signing and portal pick ups, and you’re talking up 500+.

We were at 115 last year, I think. So next year’s roster gets a 8% haircut. P4 schools will have to eliminate many more opportunities.

If we brought back burrow maybe could get some joe burrow nil money. Then once his career is over with the bengals he become assistant coach? Pipe dream but I’m a dreamer.

https://x.com/mitchmollison/status/1865607242466148542?s=46

No matter who we pick I’m confident in what frank and Albin built a program of consistency and success will continue. nil and transfers make it a different game but we were projected to go 6-6 and we went 10-3 with a MACC. We have the best fans in the mac and the best football team and the best band in the land. We will find a way forward. . Go bobcats

If that’s the case they’re following associate protocol.

Looks like Smith as the interim head coach.

A football roster size should be no more than like 80. The fact that going to 105 is a big cut is wild.
