Good article

"He’s under contract for at least two more years — through the 2017 season" - I thought he was under contract though June of 2017.

Found this quote especially interesting:

"Sophomore linebacker Quentin Poling, who emerged in 2015 as the emotional ring-leader of the defense, missed all three games Ohio lost in the MAC with a knee injury. Ohio was 8-0 this season when he played all four quarters."

Editorial comment: And, this guy wasn't good enough for 1st team All-MAC?

I guess three MAC coaches only saw him on film, which should have been good enough. Well next year he will just have to be 8-0 in the MAC and dare them to leave him off.

Why not go for 15-0 and first team all-america for Poling? Then, declare for draft and be top overall pick of the Cleveland Browns!

OMG! Poling deserves better than that!

I'd agree that it's a good, and fair article. I'd guess he's had an extension signed somewhere along the line since that five year one. I have said several times that I think he'll coach at least through 2017, but how long beyond that I don't know. He has two very good shots to get that MACC before he does retire, since these next two teams will be his best ones yet.

If coach Solich is going to hang around until he wins a MACC (and I hope he does), does that mean the victory will be bittersweet? Since it may be the only thing he has left to accomplish at Ohio, does he retire the following year, get the keys to City of Athens and "Frank Solich Field" in Peden Stadium or does he keep going as long as his body and mind allow it?

Careful what you wish for.

I have no inside information on this question, but from my discussions with Frank (on other topics) I really get the sense that football is his whole life and that he views his players as his extended family. I think it'll be much harder for him to retire than it would be for many coaches. If he would win a MACC next year, I think he'd just set another goal for himself, like making it to the Access Bowl, finishing in the top 15, etc. My guess is that he'll continue to coach as long as, to use your words, "his body and mind allow it." I could be completely wrong about this, but that's my read on the issue. The other caveat, of course, is that he must continue to have the support of the McDavis and Schaus, which at this juncture I think he still does.

It's certainly possible. He played under Bob Devaney, and coached under Tom Osborne. Devaney had his two best years in 1970 and 1971, coached one more year, and then retired. Osborne had his best years in 94, 95, and 97, and then retired at the end of 97. Thus both retired "on top", as opposed to some other long time coaches. That's where my guess comes from - I'm guessing he will want to do likewise.

This supports a post I made earlier about the definition of success. It is different in many people's eyes. Season success vs. tenure success? If we look at just this season, some would say anything less than a MACC would be a failure. Some would look at a winning record and a bowl game as a success. While we all want the MACC, is not achieving it constitute a failure of a season?

The discussion of not getting a MACC over an extended tenure is another discussion.

LC,

Do you think it's possible Frank would stay around for an extended tenure ala Bill Snyder or Joe Paterno? I mean the guy LOVES football.

He can stick around if he wins, not because he does an article.

"Drunken old-guy" post of the year.

"Now get the hell of my yard, and take that damn puppy with you -- you little sh$t" --- lol -- thanks for highlighting the article man.

I have to agree regarding the comments on Poling. For that matter Johnson and Blair Brown too. When is the last time all of them were healthy and on the field?
I thought it would be versus NIU but Brown was standing on the sideline in Dekalb.

If all three are healthy I think we beat Appy State by 3 touchdowns.

Let's raise our pocket protectors in support of cc cat. He is not afraid to tell bad jokes. Frank did not call the season a success because he is not mediocre. He stated that he was encouraged by the 3-1 November finish. He did not say he belongs in the NCAA Hall of Fame for being bowl eligible seven times in a row. Aim High Cats Fans. CC cat don't quit your day job or molest any animals.

It's certainly possible. Other than given above, I have no particular insight one way or the other.
