Ok Bobcats, looks like you guys have to travel to the Dirty South to play us Mountaineers! I look forward to this game and hope you guys are ready for some football!!! The one thing that has killed us toward the end of the season is injuries, which I hope to heal up by bowl time. Our last game against South Alabama was a killer for injuries.... With that said, this ought to be an AWESOME game and one that will go down in our history books as our first ever bowl game. We aren't new to big games though, having won several national championships and having taken down Michigan in the Big House (yeah we are tired of hearing about it also). You guys will love our tailgates and our fan base. We love to mingle with the teams we are playing and have some good natured fun. I hope you guys travel well and I wish you a safe trip to Alabama. We will see you in Montgomery! I have posted some of the bigger stats below for comparison. Stats don't always tell the full story but gives us all some reference on what to look for. Be safe and see ya Dec 19th!!! Go, Fight, KICK ASS!!! Go Mountaineers!

Ohio
45th ranked rushing offense
Appalachian
6th ranked rushing offense

Ohio
49th ranked defense
Appalachian
12th ranked defense

Ohio
47th ranked total offense
Appalachian
26th ranked total offense

I didn't even look at that one. Like I said, numbers are just that...numbers. Just giving reference. Your NIU win is probably the most impressive to me. Its gonna be a good game.

You gotta give us some love for beating Marshall, your old SoCon rival, four out of the past five meetings!

I've always liked the Appy St program, your town, stadium, etc. Should be a good one.

The stats won't matter much in this one. Injuries have also skewed our performances.

Speaking of stats...how bout checking out team passing??

Here is another one to chew on. The 2014 Boca Raton Bowl matched 12-1 Marshall against 11-2 Northern Illinois. In 2015 Ohio defeats 9-3 Marshall 21-10 and 8-4 Northern Illinois 26-21 controlling both games with defense. They say its not who you've lost to and Ohio lost to a 5-6 Buffalo team mid season but who you can beat.

Not cool, especially since they'll very likely be favored - with good reason.

Well...it's only fair that we give them locker room fodder since one of their fans said they were going to slaughter us.

Here's a connection for you: App St rose to football prominence under Jerry Moore, who coached with Solich between 73-78 under Tom Osborne. Moore coached receivers at the time while Solich was the Freshmen coach.

It wasn't just one of their fans. It was the fan in this thread:

They do have the 45th ranked rushing offense in the nation, we however have the 6th ranked rushing offense.
We have the 12th ranked defense in the nation...... they have the 49th ranked defense.
We have the 26th ranked offense in the nation...... they have the 47th ranked offense....

With all that said, these guys are not Appalachian State. They might be the 3rd ranked MAC team, but they would lose to half of the sunbelt. We should slaughter them, if we are healthy and can stay healthy.
ASUTodd wrote:expand_more
AppinATL...... not sure why you think that's the darndest thing..... Their wins aren't impressive and they rank below us in every category. If we are healthy this won't be close.
ASUTodd wrote:expand_more
Ill also add this.... the top half of the sunbelt is as follows:
Ark ST
App St
Ga South
GA State
South Alabama

They beat Idaho, who is right there in the rankings with South Alabama. South Alabama is a good team that has had some bad breaks and almost beat us. Each one of the teams I just listed would beat Ohio. I don't think that it is crazy to think that either.

WOW!! After reading ASUTodd's comments, I guess Ohio should consider themselves privileged just to be on the same field as Appalachian State. Maybe Ohio should even consider not showing up since the end result would be the same.....

Greetings, Ohio fans.

Todd gave you some stats. I'm not a real fan of stats, I'd rather play the game. Stats will get you beat.

I have been to all Apps' home games this year. Had season tickets since the late 1990s & been to games off & on since 1980-ish. While my sons were younger, (mid-2000s) there were a couple years we went to all games, home & away. We were at all playoff games, all three national title games and the Michigan game.

In 2004, App switched to the spread offense under Coach Moore. Prior to that, it was mostly the Power I. First game under the spread was against Wyoming out in Laramie. It was so bad, it looked like we'd never played a down of football before. But, we stuck with it & it got better.

The wrinkle App adds to the spread is that we prefer to run the ball. Cut back runners are especially effective. Cox is a beast! And, if somehow you all stop him consistently, we sub in Moore, a real fire plug of a back. He is quick and hard to tackle. (I've heard it described as like trying to tackle a house.)

We don't have the world's best QB, if you measure by quickness and arm-strength. BUT, he knows how to run his team, and he makes few mistakes. (His stats are actually better than he is, IMO.) His worst game was against Clemson when he threw 3 picks in the 2nd qtr. But, he can pass and run too. Of late, he has been passing a lot to our tight ends. And, you'll see Sims McElfresh & I think Bobo Beathard will be back from injury by bowl time at receivers. But, one thing our receivers can do is block downfield. Else they don't play.

What has defined App's play this year is the defense. We run a 3-5-3 mostly. The benefit of such an alignment is that the offense has no idea where the blitz is coming from. Blocking the App D can be tricky for that reason. Our DE, Ronald Blair, 6'4", 270 lbs., is a beast & a legit NFL prospect. Our inside LB, John Law is also a handful. Our DBs are good, Latrell Gibbs has 6 interceptions on the year; I think 2 of those were pick 6s.

In that Clemson game, the REALLY impressive thing was that our D played lights out. End of 1st qtr., it was 3 - 0 Clemson. In 2nd, we had 3 interceptions, leading to short fields & gave up 28 points. Final score was 41 - 10, so one way to look at it was that we hung with the Tigers for 3 quarters. Moral victories being what they are.

We lost the Ark. State game. Our O-line was injured & the subs looked somewhat baffled. Ark. State played very well though. They deserve to be conference champs. This year.

We did beat our long time rival Georgia Southern convincingly. That rivalry goes WAY back to when they cranked back up their football program in the mid-1980s. I could tell some stories there.

I have seen some Ohio games this year. But, not many. I may go back & review what I can find.

Looking forward to meeting Bobcat fans in Montgomery. Y'all come!

Yeah, I think Todd was educated beyond his intelligence. Not sure why one would go on an opponent's message board and post that stuff. My contribution to this discussion is only to point out that the majority of App fans have more decorum.

To be fair, he didn't post those comments here. I pulled them from your board. He's actually been pretty cordial here.

Question: I'm guessing most of your fans are on board with the move to D1 but do you guys miss having the playoffs this time of year? Bowl games are cool but losing a bowl game (or winning it for that matter) doesn't seem like it would have the same emotional effect as a playoff game even at D1A.

Thanks for the insights. Coaches Moore and Solich worked together way back. Would not be surprised if they have remained in touch. I am impressed with your defensive play-makers. 6 TFL, 2 INTs & 3 Sacks vs Clemson shows up well. I have seen as many as 9 TFLs in game box scores. I know you said 3-5-3, but, does it sometimes look like a 5 man line up there? Ohio will not try to be cute vs your Mountaineers. Ohio too has a receiving corps that must block, else they not play. Ohio's starters on the OL have "lots" of starts behind them. The DL has players two deep who all see meaningful minutes. FYI, disregard the Ht/Wt data on the roster or depth chart. That info never seems to get updated once first entered. There is a roster in the Game Notes which has better, perhaps current information. I hope that helps.

Yes, I miss the playoffs. Great memories there.

But, the bowl experience is new.

I have no idea how they might compare. We'll see.

Yes, sometimes it looks like a 5 man OL. That just means 2 LBs on the line. The next play it will be some other LB in another spot.

I invite you to find the 2012 Independence Bowl. I expect Ohio's OC to open the same way. Now if the players can execute in the same fashion remains to be seen.

I understand now that you folks prefer "App" to "Appy." But, I have a question. How do you want "App" pronounced? Like a app on my iPhone? To me that sounds real strange, but if that's what you want I can adapt. ;-)
