It's so hot it's cool - and just short of campy. I wonder if there's any evidence to indicate how effective it is in recruiting.

I once had a long conversation with the late Bos Johnson, WSAZ-TV news director, on this subject. Our conclusion was that the pronunciation differs from one part of the region to the other. Also, as a point of interest to the younger posters on this board, when I was growing up here I never, ever heard anyone refer to the area as part of Appalachian until the 1960s, when the Feds started the Appalachian Regional Commission. Then, it became somewhat trendy, in a strange way, to be part of the Appalachian region and get the federal support for infrastructure improvements, and especially the badly needed highway improvements. Prior to this the most common way to refer to our area was as being in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains.

The video is at least 10 years old but it does have that Brady Bunch 70's feel to it.

Warning: Campy but catchy. I think they did a very good job on this but it may cause Ear Worms.

I listened to it again to see how Appalachian was pronounced and it is "Apple Latch Ian" which is how I've heard it pronounced when I've caught Appalachian State games on TV.

I'm going with the other pronunciation except when referring to ASU.

Merriam Webster has both plus one more variation.

Two points. 1) That video is an embarrassment. Have fun with it.

2) No one associated with the university (alums, staff, students, profs) will pronounce the school's name anyway other than "Appa-latch-un". Ever.

However, depending on one's origins, the mountain range is often pronounced "Appa-lay-chun", but is heard the other way too.

One of the benefits of that Michigan win is that the name is now correctly pronounced by sports casters.

I remember when I was there in the early 1980's, an App football game appeared on ABC Sports (quite the novelty). ASU vs. The Citadel. As I recall, Kyle Gifford (I think) was one of the announcers. He mispronounced the name the ENTIRE game. I don't recall the outcome of the game. I do recall the announcer's foibles.

It's not a new video, obviously. Someone said it was ten years old, and others think it may be more dated than that. But hey, most of us are dated, too.

All that aside, it's catchy, and not badly done for the time/budget. Wait until the bowl, and you'll get to see the MAC Conference commercial. It's not well done for any time, or any budget.

Yeah, we're not really in the position to mock anyone's commercials...

Seriously? Unless it was done by a 7th grade A/V club, it's hideous. I'm convinced our fan base has such low expectations about everything, that even this video has some positive comments.

Could you imagine this video being pitched as an ad to a business? They would just laugh. It looks like an SNL skit.

To be clear, an "ear worm" is a song that get's stuck in your head so I was paying a compliment but it occurred to me not everyone may know that expression. When a song get's stuck in your head, an advertiser has succeeded.

When I see a commercial that I think is awful, or dumb, or just makes no sense, I am reminded by my wife (who does marketing) that if I don't like it, I am not the target audience. It's obvious this video is older and was likely put together with potential students and their parents in mind, albeit, a decade or two ago.

Exactly. It was obviously designed to appeal to potential students a decade or two ago. It was also done with older technology, and on a budget. Any time you look at video from long ago you're going to look at it very differently than the people of that time looked at it.

Unfortunately, I believe this damn thing is less than 10 years old (2006 or 2007 vintage). It re-surfaces whenever we play someone new. Ptooie. I understood it was done as a class project or some such effort. I hope the producer failed that class. It should have been destroyed long ago. And, now it has taken on a life of its own.

Regardless, we still play some pretty good football.

Hey Bobcats! Just another friendly App State fan stalking your message board.

Quick word about this video: It is, unfortunately, just 11 years old, but it was never a recruitment video and it was never shown to students or prospective students. Until the internet got ahold of it, that is.

It was produced for a series of travel events for our then-new Chancellor, which were attended by alumni, donors, parents, etc. It really wasn't intended to be shown beyond that narrow scope (and there was supposedly a theme to the events that made the cringeworthy video fit a little better, but who knows...), and it's been a thorn for us all ever since, to the point where some App alumni have grown a little bit fond of the thing in a weird way. It's only tiresome because it gets trotted out every time we play a new team.

The irony is that we have an excellent video production staff in our athletics department. They make fantastic hype videos. But they did NOT make that thing.

Interestingly this video merits it's own wiki page:
http://tinyurl.com/p7tfuxr

Interestingly, the song for the video was composed by John Tesh, who has a radio show these days called "Intelligence for your Life". Equally interestingly, the wiki page for John Tesh does not list this song as one of his accomplishments. ;)

I figured I'd join in on the conversation instead of lurking.

The Hot Hot Hot video is absolutely terrible.

However, interestingly enough, A couple people who have gone on to create the insanely popular Youtube Channel, schmoyoho, The Gregory Brothers are graduates of Appalachian State. They're known for their viral Songify the News videos where they take funny news interviews and turn them into catchy songs . You may remember the "Bed Intruder" or Charlie Sheen's "Winning" songs.

If you go back into their Youtube history they have a funny music video about a park on campus.

Though other App State videos play OK for me, that one has no sound. Anyone else having that experience?
