An additional fact about Coach Hess' victories over P5 teams, I forgot to mention his '58 team beat Louisville. Plus his total MAC Champion teams were '60, '62, '63, '68 and tied with Toledo in "67 for a total of 5 MAC Championships. Of course his '60 team won the National Champion title and his '68 team finished the season ranked 20th in the nation. In other words, it is possible to win big at Ohio.

That may be true and he was a great coach, but the landscape was much different in those days. I recall that when we won the national championship we were in the "college division". I'm thinking it was similar to a 1-AA classification. There wasn't as much money being thrown around and the P-5 or Big 6 leagues weren't as greedy and would play the likes of us on a regular basis.

Makes one wonder of Brian Burke would have been around longer than 1979 to 1983 - bowl eligible (6 wins each year) in 79,80,82.
In retrospect firing Burke was probably one of the worst decisions ever made by an OHIO AD. Now, of course, if Mack had been able to hire his first choice -- Glen Mason, things might have worked out better. But, as it turned out, we fired an OK coach, who might have improved some with a little more experience, to one who was hopelessly incompetent. As I recall, Burke had two straight November swoons that sealed his fate.

Bored at work so I did a little fact checking. Applying the criteria that is used for determining bowl eligibility this year, Bill Hess coached teams would have been bowling in 1962, '63, '64, '66, '67, '68, '69, '71, '73, '74, '75 and '76 for a total of 12 times in his 16 years as HC ('62-'77). Further, in reality he did take teams to two (2) bowls, '62 (Sun) and '68 (Tangerine). His 1968 team was ranked as high as 15h in the nation and in the final poll of the year they finished 20th in the nation. They won the MAC outright in 1962 and 1968 and tied Toledo for the MAC Champs in 1967. I also believe that in 1968 ABC's "Game of the Week" was broadcast from Peden Stadium. His teams defeated the following P5 teams, Kansas, Northwestern, Kentucky, Boston College and tied Minnesota. They also regularly played and beat Cincinnati and beat Tulane. Finally, Bill Hess achieved all of this with a lot less resources then what OUr current program gets. Bottom line, it can and has been done at Ohio!
Hmmm...and did not the Cats win the MAC title in '63 with an overall 6-4 record? This is another test of my sometimes murky memory.

That's all great information but completely irrelevant versus today's game

One point - Peden and Hess had less resources than today, but the foes they played also had less resources than today. Costs have escalated all around, and it's s different game today.

In the times before coaches became the highest paid employees of the system there was room for the most dedicated to simply outwork the pack. Now middle school athletes spend more time lifting, at camps, off season workouts , on nutrition than college athletes did.

Coach Hess' National Championship in 1960 was for the "College Division". The 20th in the nation finish in '68 was at what today is the FBS/D-IA level, and remains the highest of any Ohio football team end of the year finish ever, including anything the current staff has thrown on the field. In addition thereto, unless you think the schedules in '58, '59 and '60 were creampuffs, his victory over Louisville (P5 team today) was in 1958.

To others post - apples to oranges. The 1958 Louisville team played the following schedule:

Sep 27, 1958 vs Eastern Kentucky W 20 - 7
Oct 4, 1958 at Toledo L 7 - 13
Oct 11, 1958 vs Murray State W 27 - 0
Oct 18, 1958 at Dayton L 13 - 26
Oct 25, 1958 at Central Michigan W 40 - 7
Nov 8, 1958 vs Kent State W 21 - 0
Nov 15, 1958 at Ohio L 6 - 23
Nov 22, 1958 vs North Texas L

I can imagine this board if that was announced as our schedule. The 1960 Ohio team (Nat. Champs) replaced Louisville on our schedule with Boston University. Ohio's schedule in 1960:

Sept. 17 at Dayton W 28- 0
Sept. 24Toledo W 48- 7
Oct. 1 at Kent W 25- 8
Oct. 8 at Boston University W 36- 6
Oct. 15 at Xavier W 6- 0
Oct. 22 Miami W 21- 0
Oct. 29 at Western Michigan W 24- 0
Nov. 5 Marshall W 19- 0
Nov. 12at Bowling Green W 14- 7
Nov. 19 Southern Illinois W 48- 6

Talk about impressive D - 34 points all season!

I do not remember the details, but I do remember that that Boston University victory was considered a big upset. They played a University Division schedule, though their overall record was not that good:

2 Boston University (2)Syracuse Ind L 7 35 0 2 0

4 Boston University Ohio Non-Major L 6 36 1 3 0
5 Boston University George Washington Southern T 0 0 1 3 1
6 Boston University Connecticut Non-Major L 14 16 1 4 1
7 Boston University Massachusetts Non-Major W 20 7 2 4 1
8 Boston University West Virginia Southern T 7 7 2 4 2

The Southern Illinois game at the end of the season, was the big game. Peden had an overflow crowd with people literally standing in any free space they could find.

Actually gentlemen, it is about apples and apples. The losses that people have complained about since 2012 have all been MAC games and why we cannot compete for the MACC on a regular basis. If you then go back and look at the Bill Hess era you will see familiar names on those schedules like Miami, Kent State, Bowling Green, Western Michigan, Toledo, Central Michigan, Northern Illinois and even Marshall. In 1960 Ohio played MAC foes Toledo, Kent State, Miami, Western Michigan, Bowling Green and Marshall and outscored the competition 151-22. As was stated above, Ohio only gave up 34 points on defense the entire year, something our defense this year managed to exceed in three successive games to MAC schools Western Michigan, Buffalo and Bowling Green. Ghee, those names sound familiar? So yes, the concern on this Board in part is because we have not been able to achieve a MAC Championship under our current staff and some of you make out that it is next to impossible to accomplish. For others who have seen it happen at this institution, our patience is running rather thin. Enough of the "wait until next year" crap, it is time to produce.

Go Bobcats!

And while we are on the apples-to-apples discussion, here is a look at the current P5 programs Hess' Cats managed to defeat. You already know about the '58 victory over Louisville in Coach Hess' first year. Here are the others.

In 1966 the Cats went to Boston College and defeated BC 23-14. BC was 4-6 that year.

In 1967 the Cats went to Kansas and beat them 30-15. Kansas was 5-5 that year with wins over Oklahoma State, Iowa State, Kansas State, Missouri and, you guessed it - Nebraska. Therefore, they finished 5-2 in the Big 8 losing to Colorado 12-8 and Oklahoma 14-10. Go figure.

In 1969 the Cats tied Minnesota 35-35. Minnesota was 4-5-1 that year with our tie and victories over Iowa, Northwestern, Wisconsin and Michigan State.

In 1971 the Cats went to New Orleans and beat a 3-8 Tulane club 30-7. Tulane beat Texas Tech, North Carolina and Pittsburgh that year.

Also in 1971 we went to Lexington, Kentucky and beat UK 35-6. The next week UK lost to LSU 13-17 and beat Clemson, Virginia Tech and Vandy that year.

Finally, in 1973 we beat a 4-7 Northwestern club 14-12. Northwestern beat Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Michigan State that year.
