Watching Cincinnati and San Diego State. Some of us got a like San Diego State running out of the I formation going for it on fourth and one. Showing some balls. Throwing it just enough to keep everybody honest.

Now watching Clemson versus Oklahoma. How about the fake punt at midfield. Those coaches at Clemson have some balls. Most coaches would have punted there. still say we should have gone for it on fourth down and showed we have balls too.

Quote, we won the game in the trenches. I hope FS&Co gets back to good old hardnose football next year. We need to be much more physical.

And, another quote last night after the National Championship game from our fav Ohio State announcer (Herbstreet). If you take a risk you get a reward. Say what you want about him but Saban showed his balls with the on side kick pretty early in the game. He took a risk and showed some balls and got his team back in it. I still wish we had done shown some balls on the fourth down in the bowl game. I know 100% of coaches would kick the field goal to go ahead but that didnt help in the end.

Also must admit that the college game was much better than the pro Cincy vs Pitt game. Now I really know why I like college football more than the pros. Seeing the two stars from opposing teams in an embrace and exchanging words after the game was much better than the pros showing no class whatsoever.

The call for the onside by Saban was absolute perfection. I hated it to no end because I wanted to see Clemson win, but it was beautiful.

(1) Because Saban doesn't do those kind of things.

(2) Because Clemson was shredding the Tide D.

(3) Because Clemson had no idea it was coming.

Exactly. These things only work if you've established a record of conservative play calling to the point that no one is expecting you'd do anything that's not in your original game plan. I remember in one game when Grobe had an onside's kick at the beginning of half. Everyone was in total shock, especially the receiving team, because no one expected it. OHIO recovered, and as I recall scored on the drive. Anyone recall more detail about this game, who it was against, and who won. I think OHIO won, but I'm not sure.

We might be thinking of different games. The one that I recall was in 1999 at OSU. Halftime score was 10-10. Grobe ordered an onside kick to begin the 2nd half. OSU recovered.

A few days later I spoke with him by phone. I asked why he made that choice. Here is a close paraphrase of what he said: "In the locker room our kids really believed we could win. I knew we didn't have the depth to stay with Ohio State for four quarters - unless we did something unexpected. I thought if we could surprise OSU to start the second half and score, it might give us the momentum to stay with them and perhaps win. Thus the onside kick."

You might recall that Dontrell Jackson still was only 17 when he started that game.

I do remember that OSU game, Mike, but that's not the one I'm thinking about. The game I'm remembering was in Peden Stadium. I don't remember the opponent for sure, but I think it might have been Marshall or Ball State. I think it was a fairly early season league game because I remember the weather was fairly warm. So, maybe Grobe did this twice in his OHIO career and was successful once and failed once -- better than the general onside average. The odds do go up in situations where the other team is not expecting it.

Mike, you sure that call wasn't a fake punt rather than an onside kick?

Also, no coach used onside kicks more than Cleve Bryant. He once did it to open the second half. Of course, it's the only offensive weapon he had on a few of those teams.

I found a play-by-play report (below). Ohio won the toss and deferred. So OSU kicked off to start the 2nd half. There was a 20-yard KO after Ohio tied it at 3-3 but I can't tell if it was onsides or not. Judging from the distance on Kerr's KOs (in bold below), Ohio was sky-kicking the whole game. The failed fake punt attempt that SBH mentioned (also in bold) came with Ohio trailing 17-10.

OU wins toss, defers. OSU to receive, OU to defend north goal.

Mike, you sure that call wasn't a fake punt rather than an onside kick?

Also, no coach used onside kicks more than Cleve Bryant. He once did it to open the second half. Of course, it's the only offensive weapon he had on a few of those teams.
You could well be right.

Wasn't the final score of that game 40-16?

I think the Vegas spread was something like OSU by 35.

I had three sources of tickets for that game but needed to be in China on business. While there, knowing the time difference, I phoned my late wife Lynne when I knew the game had ended. Before she even said "Hi," Lynne said, "It wasn't as bad as you thought it would be."

It was after returning stateside that I phoned Grobe at home. His wife Holly answered. This was during my years as pres of the Akron-Canton Alumni Chapter, and a nice friendship had formed with Jim & Holly. When I explained my reason for phoning, she said that "Jim was really proud of the boys." He echoed his pride in the team after taking the phone. Grobe was easy to like and respect.

I do remember the fake punt. Grobe explained after the game that it was not a called fake. The punter was always given the green light to run or pass if he saw an opportunity. Grobe said that Ohio State had lined up with a guy uncovered and that the punter had made a reasonable decision to go for it. As I recall he came fairly close to the line to gain. But, this is one of those cases where close doesn't count. I remember at the time being very proud of Grobe for not throwing the player under the bus, and saying that he had made a reasonable call, even though it had been unsuccessful and kind of opened the flood gates.

As you can see in the box score, it wasn't close. It was 4th-and-9 and he lost 9. He was swallowed up immediately.

Hmm ... So you are believing contemporaraneus notes and reporting over the memory of a delusional fan? Well, at least I remembered it was a punt and not an onside kick. :-). This reminds me of the major discrepancies you find between wartime reporting of battles during the late Slaveholders Rebellion and what many veterans said and wrote years later. [Obligatory Civil War reference; always my get-out-jail-free card when I have no real comeback except to admit I was wrong, which is not part of recognized fan board etiquette.]

Here is the Clev Bryant onside kick call as I remember it - and my memory might be a tad off.

Ohio was hosting CMU and was a decided underdog. A minute or two before halftime, Ohio scored to take a lead - and Clev ordered an onside kick. CMU recovered and quickly drove for the go-ahead score. I had two immediate thoughts:
* CMU will swamp Ohio in the 2nd half - which happened.
* That call will cost Clev his job. Not sure if that was the proximate cause of his firing after that season.
