Not sure if anyone saw the coin toss for our game against Idaho this past season, but there was a player named Jace Malek who was one of the Vandals' captains for the game. He was on crutches.

He was battling bone cancer and passed away this past Sunday.

I remember the pre-game activities pretty well. I had read about this player and his status before the game. A really sad story and a classy reaction by the football staff.

I have to say that the Idaho people are trying to do good things for the football program. They had a fan tent before the game. The President of the university coming through the Ohio fans and personally thanking us for coming to the game was one of the classiest moves by a school I've ever seen.

Anyway, I wish Idaho luck in the future, but the Sun Belt conference just refused yesterday or the day before to keep them and New Mexico State in the conference after this year. Doesn't look good for them to stay in FBS for long.

Sorry about the off topic rambling, but just some random thoughts about the overall situation. Thoughts and prayers out to his family and all involved.

This is sad. I remember seeing this guy on TV when the did the coin flip. Hopefully, we will soon be able to have more effective treatments against all types of cancer. There is some amazing research being done in this area right now and we are on cusp, I believe, of some real breakthroughs. Sorry they didn't come in time for this man. Prayers are certainly in order.

(Not trying to detract from the portions of your post that I didn't quote). This is true. Amazing things happening at the moment when immunotherapy [e.g. Nivolumab, pembroluzimab, ipilumimab, (sorry, hard enough for me to spell the generic names, you're not getting the branded names)] is used alone or in combination with chemotherapy, "targeted therapy", or radio therapy. And that's just in solid tumors, not even getting into the remarkable effects that CAR T cells have had in some hematological malignancies*. I'll stop talking shop/science on a sports message board, but will happily continue to nerd out with anyone via PM.

*i am currently involved in research funded by the federal government and/or private entities regarding these agents. I don't personally benefit from or get any cash as a result of these studies, but I felt like disclosing all the same.

THere were recent headlines about some new approach to cancer that was 94% effective in early testing against one type of cancer. Sorry about not remembering the details but good stuff going on. (Not sure how/if it ties to the stuff mentioned in mf's post.)

Note that this is done under Obama. Yes.

Which Obama, the radio said today, 5 million more private sector jobs than when he took office.

Indeed.

Speaking of classy, the antithesis of classy would be to hijack a thread honoring a deceased player, and try to turn it into a political discussion.
