It's been getting bad lately. Those of you doing it are violating posting policy. Get it under control now. It's ok to post strong opinions, and strong disagreements, but we are cracking down on the personal insults.

If you want to clean things up Jeff, just set the site up where folks have to post under their own name. Case closed.

Maybe, maybe not. I, unfortunately, know a lot of folks who are just as big a-holes in person as under any message board alias they might chose. I'm not necessarily referring to any one on this board; I'm just making a general statement that some folks will say the same obnoxious things under their real names as under an alias. I will admit that for others this requirement might have salutary effect.

One other thing to keep in mind is that there are some folks on this board who use a screen-name not to hide behind snarky comments or personal attacks but simply because they need anonymity for other very legitimate reasons. I'm not talking about myself, because I could live with a real-name requirement. I'm referring to private communications that I've had with some others -- who are very valued members of the BA community -- who would simply drop out if such a requirement was enforced. And, again, these are not the folks to whom Jeff's remarks are directed.

I've been known to hurl a personal insult or two on this message board and my real name has been listed in my bio for every one of them.

This is a message board, not a phone book.

Jeff, a requirement to use real names would not inherently be exclusionary. Individuals would have a choice - to post or not.

I used to post under my real name, Convo McHappy. Now I post under an assumed name to throw people off.

Jeff-Thanks for this reminder. I find myself reacting to comments and sometimes want to post something that I wouldn't typically say.

I want to believe that civility and understanding of other points of view is something that is still a core belief of most. I fear that even the hint of anonymity has given people the freedom to use the freedom of speech to say things without the same consequences and feedback as when you have to look someone in the eye. It seems that every topic of conversation in the public domain has become about me versus you. Anonymity, whether real or because of distance and shear numbers, seems to be a license to attack people and not discuss ideas.

This board was much different when I first started reading and then, reluctantly, posting. At that time the board seemed to be more interactive with a tone of respect, acceptance and acknowledgment. It seemed more like sitting at the bar with your buddies talking about your favorite team. There was a lot more of "this is my opinion and here is why" versus "I know more than you and you are just wrong". Because of the perceived change in the board's tone I took nearly a full year sabbatical from posting (I tried to stop reading comments but the pull was too great :) Now I stop in for an occasional drink at this bar but mostly I just sit by myself, watching a game and sipping my drink while watching the other loud patrons argue.

Like with politics, I hope that the common middle majority rallies to pull the extremes toward that common ground. I fear that the two extremes will continue to pull from each end until the middle just snaps. Some times it snaps in the middle and sometimes more toward one side or the other. Regardless we are left with 2 pieces instead of one piece working together.

I have updated my profile so that my name is shown when someone wishes to go to my profile. That is just my personal way to remind me that I own what I say.

Guys with an advanced degree from Stanford are being a little existential today following the Iowa spank.

Oops I hope that is not too "flaming".

It was, Tim, admittedly nice to see those student-athlete Cardinal play their A game in another big one - and confirm my belief that they likely would have provided stiffer competition in the playoff than either OK or MSU.

Existential = flaming? Nah. The Stanford band is a reminder of the university's laid back environment. And if you've read my Long Journey To Destiny, you learned about some very quirky Stanford traditions.

This is ambiguous. I can't figure out if he's saying that Alan or TS is the #1 problem. Whichever he means, he's wrong. Neither are the #1 problem around here. Since I don't want to engage in flaming or personal insults, I'll refrain from revealing his or her true identity. But you're welcome to entertain an educated guess in the privacy of your home or office.

ROTFL!

The subtly of your argument is not lost on some on this board. To others it will seem like nonsense. Hint to the less philosophical: look up reducio ad absurdum.

Guys, it's a message board for crying out loud. I have probably hurled some and been the recipient. I don't take anything on here personal. And, opinions? They are like ass holes...we all have them and most of them stink:)

Alan told me his name is Alan - but how do I know that is the truth? :)

Should we require birth certificates be posted?

A mutual friend told me that Alan has a birth certificate showing he was born in Canada of U.S. parents and that he got the birth certificate from a very respectable website in Kenya! ;-)

Yes, but, Alan, I seem to recall that back about the time you were born, Akron General had temporarily seceded.

Well, I know that's what's your birth certificates says, but can you prove it wasn't faked in Kenya? ;-)

All seriousness aside (as Steve Allen used to say), you share a birthday with Gifford Doxsee. He's really quite a patriot having been a POW in WWII. I assume you know Gifford, a retired OHIO history professor.
