Maxwell, Irons leaders of first scrimmage.

"RS sophomore running back Maleek Irons (Chilliwack, B.C.) led the Ohio running backs with 43 yards on five carries and caught two passes for 14 yards."

"Four quarterbacks took reps in the scrimmage led by redshirt freshman Quinton Maxwell (Rayville, Mo.) who went 6-9 for 78 yards."

These two reports provide conflicting information. Sacks, five reported vs seven. Irons, rushing "43 yards on five carries and caught two passes for 14 yards" vs "30 yards on seven carries and one reception for 12 yards." Perhaps the OhioBobcats.com report credited Irons with a 14 yard run Arkley gave to Brown. This would be good to have sorted since it appears there was a fumble involved which is not easily forgiven.

Anyway, it would be helpful if anyone has information about who recorded the sacks, LBs or DL and if any were allowed by that reported starting group of "Troy Mangen (RT), Durrell Wood (RG), Jake Pruehs (C), Josh Cooper (LG) and Joe Lowery (LT)." Very likely Arkley meant Troy Watson, not "Troy Mangen (RT)."

For me the biggest news, even bigger than the progress shown by Maxwell, is Joe Lowery is back and getting snaps in the first scrimmage. :)

Troy Mangen has been a TE and now he's playing RT. Very interesting. Chris Rodgers made the same transition a few years ago so it can be done, but Mangen is a bit undersized isn't he?

Messenger article now updated, "Ohio had an initial starting five of Troy Watson (RT), Durrell Wood (RG), Jake Pruehs (C), Josh Cooper (LG) and Joe Lowery (LT)."

Mangen mentioned elsewhere as follows, "More players, such as TE Troy Mangen, Sprague and safety Kylan Nelson, won’t do much during the camp as a whole as they recover from off-season surgery."

He's probably afraid for his health. When's the last time we had a TE go through a season without missing time for injury?

The mention of Troy Mangen at RT was just an error, and should have referred to Troy Watson. With Arkley trying to cover so much in so little time, he deserves some slack.

It nice to hear that Maxwell is looking good. Even though he was under the radar, I think he's the QB of the future. It's also nice to hear that the OL is starting to gel. The two most important areas that need to make good progress this Spring are the offensive line and the defensive backs.

I continue to be impressed by how we win the MAC Football Spring Championship each year.

Hopefully, that will carry over to the fall one of these years!

At least we don't get blown out, because there's never any scoring.

I friend of mine attended the scrimmage and gave me some feedback, nothing that significant or that much different from what Arkley presented. He's a head coach at the high school level so he is someone I trust to give an honest assessment.

His first comment was Krizancic was not at all impressive and someone he spoke to expected him to eventually switch positions to get on the field (back to WR).

Liked what he saw from Maxwell and says he looks the part and is a "big kid"

Lastly, said the O-Line looked awful. I'm hopeful some of that is at east partially due to the D-Line being very good.

Didn't prod for any more info. I was happy to hear the feedback on Maxwell as positive. I would love for him to win the job this fall and run the show for 4 years.

Yes, yes, I'm not surprised that the offensive line has a long way to go to catch up with the defense. The offensive line has some rebuilding to do, while the defensive line is going to be great.

As for Maxwell, I like hearing that he's doing well. Ever since he was signed I've been high on him, and have thought he has the potential to be great. The downside is that we'll no doubt spend all fall with threads that he should start. I expect to see Sprague and Windham at the top, with Maxwell in third this fall, then Maxwell as the starter for 3 years. If Maxwell is good enough to pass 2 fifth year guys, that would be impressive, though not impossible.

At the same time, there is usually always a favorite heading into camp, or two favorites. This year it seems like any of four guys could get the job.

I hope it goes to Maxwell, it'd be nice to have some continuity at the position for the next few years.

It certainly should not go to Max-well based on talent.

First he has to prove his dedication and maturity and commitment. And deportment.

And, that he can block.

Then, after the guys in front of him get their chance, he can compete to see if he should see the field.

Or perhaps Maxwell simply needs to learn the playbook

....

Obviously you never play a person solely because he the most talented player. I can think of nothing that would destroy a team faster. I can just imagine the meeting with a senior.... "look, John, we appreciate all the work you've put in over the years. Yes, we know that your results on the field have been better than the freshman, and yes, you grade out better, but we think he has more talent than you do, and someday he may be better than you. Yes, he's been arrested, and yes, there are other off the field issues, but so what? It's all about talent now. Hard work, team attitude, and on the field performance don't count for anything, and neither did off the field behavior, so get over it. The freshman will be starting from now on."

If a player wants to start he needs to work hard to make himself the best player at all aspects of his position.

Maxwell should be the starter if the Big Ben comparisons are even remotely true. I've never seen him throw a pass before so who knows. The bad oline evaluation scares the crap out of me though.
