You have to consider how many rounds there used to be. Most of Ohio's picks in the 60s and 70s came in rounds like 13, 14, 15 and 17.

You have to consider how many rounds there used to be. Most of Ohio's picks in the 60s and 70s came in rounds like 13, 14, 15 and 17.
Then you also need to look at how many teams were in the NFL....No where near in the 60's what there is today, and and just a couple more in the 70's as there was the 60's.

In 1960 there were only 13 teams in the NFL, but 1969 there were 16, a full half of what you have today. So you are talking the equivalent of 14 round draft in today's standards

When was the 53-man roster rule implemented? After the 60s no doubt, but also after the 70s?

Nothing today can compare to anything in the 60's and '70's. If you were there you'd know. ;-)

I have posted stats in the past about the Bill Hess era of football at Ohio. If his teams had the same opportunities as Coach Solich's teams do today, Coach Hess' teams would far out succeed Coach Solich's teams. IMHO we currently have not reached under Coach Solich what we achieved under Coach Hess, especially if you factor in all of the available Bowl games and NFL teams there are in today's world. Finally, remember that in 1968 Ohio at one point was I believe 18th in the nation and more importantly FINISHED the season ranked 20th in the nation.

Bill Hess was a heck of a football coach. He was only 19-21-1 when I was on campus, but he won a MACC during those years and was also 0-10 one year. Those were exciting times and BG was our main rival in most sports. You can't argue with 4 MACC's in 19 year.

His son once told me that he never made more than $30,000 a year. How time has changed the great sport of college football.

And, he once turned down an offer to be the head coach at Pittsburgh. It was reported widely at the time that he had the offer and that he was likely to leave, but he then announced he was staying at OHIO. I remember when I heard this report on the radio and breathed a huge sigh of relief. ;-)
