Carlos Santana can't hit. The king of .182 average. He's sort of portly, certainly no speed merchant.

Terry Francona moves him from clean-up 4th batter to leadoff, the traditional province of speedsters.

What does it do for The Tribe?

Note that Francona is a manager who has won championships: "Terry Francona is the only manager in Major League history to win his first eight consecutive World Series games and just the second manager to guide two Red Sox clubs to World Series titles, the other being Bill "Rough" Carrigan who led Boston to back-to-back championships in 1915 and 1916." Wikipedia

Nearly a century with no World Series title and Francona gets them two.

Contrast the incredibly conservative lack of imagination of a coach who has not won a MACC in 11 years.

I know. You SFB won't get it at all.

I know2. Wikipedia is a liberal construct so, of course, the alleged facts above about Terry Francona can't be true.

You are an idiot. There's no way that Santana can bat leadoff. He doesn't know the leadoff playbook. He has never batted leadoff--it will never work.

Or, you can keep running it all season long at the goal line with a single running back who goes about a buck seventy-seven when it ain't working...instead of reacting to circumstances.

cc--My Man!

Like it wasn't foreseeable that you and the rest of the SFB would react with obloquy instead of meeting the thesis or acknowledging that it holds some truth.

Yeah yeah yeah. Let's see what Santana's batting average is a month from now.

More importantly, the Tribe has taken 2 straight from the Tigers. Don't think they did that at all last year.

Solich Fooball Bunch

MLembright. That's the point; Francona made an unorthodox move and it produced results!

Santana's batting average has been lousy for a number of years but his on base % is decent, apparently--so the switch to leadoff.

The point is that Francona is not rigidly extreme conservative. He shows imagination. He engages in the mental approach.

And it's paid off a bit.

He hasn't standed pat in light of continuing losses.

AND FRANCONA WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Not in Cleveland he doesn't. No one does in this city anymore. Maybe, just maybe Lebron will change that. We'll see.

Santana was batting lead-off for 1 series. That will change once Brantley comes off the DL, possibly today. And so far, Francona hasn't won anything in Cleveland yet, although I blame the owner more for that than Francona.

Monroe...your posts always intrigue me, usually inform me and sometimes piss me off. But this comparison is really, really a stretch.

BayCat...Thanks...I don't think this is a stretch. In my disenchantment with Solich, a major theme is the total conservative/lack of imagination/refusal to change or try anything new.

Francona won two championships for a team that hadn't won any for about 90 years. Putting Santana at leadoff, despite his seeming to be perfectly ill-suited for that, paid off: a sweep of De-troit after The Tribe was stumbling.

It's an apt thought. Differences don't show in bolt-from-on-high differences. They're usually in an accumulation of little things such as Santana to leadoff.

You probably won't agree with this but here goes. I attended Ohio from 1990-1995. I suffered through the Lichtenberg era. I was part of the few dozen students who made it through the end of games. I helped tear down the goalposts when we beat Kent State in 1994.

I don't like "mediocrity" but the state of our program is so much better than where it was when I was a student and that is my basis of comparison. I love the fact that we are a respected program. I love the fact that every year I think we can contend. We are no longer the laughingstock that defined my time at Ohio.

Does this mean I have a different definition of success than you do? Probably. I appreciate your enthusiasm for the program but some of your posts seem to come out of left field. That's fine. It's a message board, it's not the board room. While I visit this site to get information about the program, it's also a great distraction for me.

I still think it's a stretch to compare what Francona did with Santana to Frank trying something new. But if the Tribe wins the division by 1 game and it's due to Santana's homer off of Verlander on Friday, I may feel differently.

He was 0-5 yesterday so yes, yes and yes to the statements.

Did the Tribe win yesterday?

I've long stated that the main standard is wins and losses.

It'a a fair standard when the coaches are being paid.

Further, please tell me about subtle moves, little wrinkles that the OHIO FOOTBALL staff has instituted that have made a difference. That made a difference.

I can think of only one: the sweet play used twice two years ago, each time near the goal line, in which the qb walks down the line as if giving instruction to the O-linemen while the ball is direct snapped to a running back who runs it in. A great play with the qb essentially being 'in motion.'

Even that wasn't deployed real wisely. One of the times we used it was against a real weak team (an FCS opponent, I believe). And it wasn't a real difference maker either time...I don't think it clinched a win for us either time (??).

L.C. will point to widened O-line splits against B.G. last year. Maybe. But kinda too little, too late.
