Seriously? It's a college football game. Take a few hours off.

What I never want to see is Peden or the Convo become a place where drinking leads to an atmosphere that discourages families from bringing their future Bobcats to enjoy the "experience".

I believe the beer and "family experience" can coexist. I like to go to pro games and it seems to work. It is worth a try on the reserve side.

I would like to see us test it for one year and if it creates a great experience, let's keep it. If it fosters a negative experience, let's scratch it. I think students would stay longer at games and I would love to see ESPN highlights of our crazy fans. They may have beer pong in the stands or something crazy!

That's old school thinking. It's more than a college football game these days and to remain relevant, you have to adapt.

Not selling beer at games is one of the most obnoxious things about college sports.

From an OU perspective it would certainly help attendance and student attendance in particular. It would bring more casual fans to the games who wouldn't have to sacrifice drinking time. It would also lead to people staying at the games longer.
And people wonder why we are called a party school.
Which people?
+1

How many national championships in partying do we need to win for people to stop wondering?

They've decided at Ohio to make the beer tent a donor perk.

On the one hand, what's the big deal, can't we survive 4 hours without a beer?
Four hours without a beer? Sure. Four hours of __UTM without a beer? No.

Attendance would increase, student attendance would increase and sustain through most of the game and the overall experience would be improved. To suggest otherwise is just ignorant. There's a reason every major professional venue sells alcohol at events and it's not to keep attendees well hydrated. It's to make money and to enhance the experience.

I'm in agreement about making money. Increasing the actual attendance, I'm not in agreement, though I can see how a small bump in student attendance could occur. Sustaining the student attendance, I can see the thought process there. I'd be interested to see some actual data from places that have been doing this for a little while. I'm thinking of BG, where they've done it for a couple years.

I'm not sure how anyone being able to have a beer or two at the game enhances the experience. It should enhance revenue, which is why I'd be in favor of it. For football games, most of us have spent more than enough time beforehand tailgating and/or at a bar, that I don't see the real benefit in "enhanced" gameday experience.

I think the experiment would be worthwhile, but there's a lot to get sorted out. It's not as easy as, hey, let's just sell beer in the stadium now. Policing the student sections to avoid underage drinking is probably a chief concern at Peden. In the Convo, it would seem to be easier to handle that.

If my memory serves me correctly, places that choose to sell beer only do so until the end of the 3rd Quarter. Is that enough of a draw to keep people at the game longer? I don't know. Sitting on steel bleachers through lengthy (boring) TV timeouts might have more to do with people leaving early than not being able to get that beer.

There are people who do not tailgate (crazy I know). I think it can help with people in this boat. Along with beer, I'd like to see a serious upgrade in concessions food. All of this would add to the atmosphere along with winning too. I'm not sure any of this changes things with the students, winning and excitement could help there.

Great point on the concessions. Frankly, that might go further with me than beer would, especially at The Convo. Imagining week night games, I could get to the game and have "dinner" at the game instead of racing to Athens to get something before the game. And OU makes the money instead of, say, BW3, or some other uptown establishment.

More likely to boost attendance, revenue/contributions (from all sources), fan enthusiasm: alcohol or MAC title?

I think the food and beer go together toward the overall fan experience. If we can offer something unique in those areas, people will enjoy coming to the games for the overall gameday experience.

The very best college football programs all have special gameday atmospheres. That doesn't mean they have great concession offerings, but if we do have that, it'll only help. Right now, I would argue concessions are not only failing to positively contribute, but actually having a negative impact on gameday experience.

Given the massive indifference within our fan base, I'd say that's a good question. And no, I didn't miss your point.

Monroe,
I think that the answer is both. Winning will always draw people in. Improved atmosphere will keep them around too. We need to do both. The coaches need to win and the rest of the Athletic Department needs to improve the game day experience. I love to tailgate and will continue. But wouldn't it be nice if I ever was jammed for time but knew I could go to Peden and get some awesome food and a beer with my family and watch my Bobcats. Right now, there is nothing I want there. I'm not saying the alcohol is a magic pill to make it all better. It is just one very small piece. There are many steps and winning is one of if not the most important step.

It sure would be nice to have an ice cold beer and a grilled brat on gameday from a food truck (preferably from a local who established their own business to put money in their pocket). I think the overall tailgating experience would improve especially if there were 5+ food trucks with a variety of food to purchase. My mouth is watering up thinking about it.

If you think our fans are indifferent, what do you think about the rest of the MAC? Game day in Athens is still a pretty neat thing to experience without the 95,000 fans that the football factories draw. Game night in Athens is not as much fun for me particularly in November. Lots of things to improve upon, but it's still a fun experience and a lot more fun when we win.

Game day in Athens is a fun experience, yes. But I still say our fans are (largely) indifferent. Of course they hope we win, but the fan behavior is not exactly... fanatical. They clap politely at appropriate times. They ask you to sit down if you're blocking their view of the field. They whine about poor concessions and the PA drowning out the band. They hope we win, but hey, if we lose, they won't lose any sleep over it.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, just an observation. Would a MAC Title suddenly result in sell-out crowds the following season? I don't think so.

I think we aren't fanatical at football games because we're more of a basketball school at heart.

Fan behavior is one thing, but many fans drive for hours( or in my case fly for hours) to get to see the Bobcats. That's not indifferent by my definition. We probably lost our fanaticism after so many years past of being terrible. I can take what we have here.

I'm not saying ALL fans are indifferent, but I think many/most are. I agree our years of being dismal probably still hurts our fandom.
