Johnson 5'10" 180 vs Licata 6'2" 210. Can it be "size matters?"

Johnson is 5'11 1/2'' and 212 lbs. Still undersized but not quite that bad. Johnson just seems to be one of those great college system QB's that doesn't fit the NFL mold.

Thanks. I used Wiki data. Shudda known better.

"Weaknesses Short quarterback gets shorter with sidearm release. Struggles to see over defenses and has too many balls batted. System stat-piler. Struggles to drive throws and has to swing entire lower body through his throw like a pitcher. Won't be able to make all the NFL throws. Will hang onto ball too long. Took 35 sacks this season despite high percentage of short throws. Just over 68 percent of his attempts were inside of 10 yards. Poise in pocket is very average.
Draft Projection Undrafted free agent
Bottom Line Johnson rung up some very impressive passing numbers in Dino Babers' offense and took full advantage of the deep ball counters when they were available. His size is below the NFL norm and the arm strength is well below the line. Johnson lacks special mobility traits to make up for his physical deficiencies and might have to wait for a camp invite to get his shot.

Didn't both of 'em pretty much shred us last season?

You could argue that it took some pretty decent qb's to topple us.

But they didn't just beat us, they killed us. Seems to add to my thesis that any half-way decent or experienced qb puts up points on our defense...because if you've seen us on film for a game or two then you ain't gonna see anything new or different when you actually play us. Leaves us subject to giving up much points to qb's of not-remarkable ability.

Well, no. Licata, the one the Bengals signed, threw for 212 w/0 TDs against Ohio. Vick threw for 321 in that game. The old song "Run the Ball, Stop the Run, Win the Game" applied in the Buffalo game. Buffalo outgained Ohio 161 to 54 rushing. Their defense added 4 Ints, two which were returned for TDs, singing another old song "Defense Wins." So against Buffalo at least it was not about QB play.

Licata and Buffalo's offense is comparable to an NFL offense. Not surprised at all. Johnson would fit in a Dallas offense where short throws and quick seems are open. Not sure if he will get that big of a shot. I can definitely see him playing in Canada.

Johnson = Connor Shaw of the Browns. Both undersized with great college numbers but someone will put Johnson on their practice squad.

I don't know what kind of QB Johnson will be at the professional level, but he was a damn good QB in college. If he was at OU and not BG, the team with and without MAC titles the last few years would be reversed. I'd have taken him as a QB in a heartbeat. Kid was gutty and a winner. Thank God he's finally gone.
