I'm taking a one way flight to San Diego on April 9 to hike the Pacific Crest Trail (which connects the U.S. border of Mexico to the U.S. border of Canada).

I know some on this site enjoyed following my blog when I cycled across the U.S. in 2011.

I'll be keeping a similar blog this summer (with better photos this time).

Awesome! What an adventure.

Only done a small stretch near Crate Lake but it was pretty amazing. Have you already done the AT?

Nope. The closest I've been to the AT is riding through Damascus, Virginia on bicycle (and watching the AT hikers stumble down from the hills).

Outside of my childhood Cub Scouts experience, I don't have any overnight hiking experience.

All the more of an adventure for you. Between your preparation and befriending others on the trail I am sure it will not be an obstacle!

I am incredibly jealous. I hiked from the AT from Springer to Erwin (350 miles) right after graduation. I wish I would have stayed on... Such an incredible experience.

Here's an article about an Ohio alum friend of mine who's visited every continent. Between you and her, you guys are giving me serious adventure itches.

Very cool accomplishment.

You should consider cutting loose, even for a short adventure.

One option close to home that you can bite off in small chunks is the Buckeye Trail (which is a 1,400 mile trail loop around Ohio).

http://www.buckeyetrail.org/overview.php

For cycling, the Underground Railroad trail (which connects Alabama to Canada) conveniently cuts diagonally across the entire state of Ohio. The maps are already made for you to follow.

You can even just make up your own adventure. Last year my 61 year old dad cycled around most of Lake Erie for 10 days (556 miles) (he caught a ferry from Canada to near Sandusky before finishing the loop to Cleveland).

At some point during my time at Ohio I came across a web page about a couple who canoed the entire length of the Mississippi in the late aughts or early '10s. At least one of them was an Ohio University alumnus, and I believe they were in the process of writing a book about the experience at that time.

While unsuccessfully trying to find that web page today, I came across an article about an Ohio student, Conor Emser, who recently cycled across America through the popular Bike & Build program, but also later kayaked the length of the Mississippi River with a group of four.

Good luck! I have a major "itch" to take on a section hike of the AT, or maybe the Long Trail. I wish there was more time on my calendar!

Please don't ignore the matchless feat of your fellow Bobcat, Steve Newman, a fervent supporter of all things Bobcat to this moment, distinguished alumnus and all-around great guy. You may have heard him speak to your school assembly.

I've never heard of this guy.

But man that's impressive.

Who wants to add him to the Ohio University list of notable alumni?

He's certainly earned a spot:

Sidebar: Somebody REALLY needs to clean these categories up... actors, authors, pageant winners, photographers, and radio personalities are all lumped together as "entertainers and artists"

Love the irony that this great walker's parents met on an elevator.

Steven lives in Ripley on top of a hill overlooking the Ohio River. He has stayed with us when he spoke at assemblies at schools where I was the principal. Also had his sister as a student when I was a teacher in his hometown of Bethel.

Nice guy fro a great family....Worldwalker books are a good read.

Situation, may I suggest you take a break when you near Los Angeles and hook up with Monroe to work on that autobiography he suggested you write for him. (I'm still trying to figure out how it will be an AUTObiography if Monroe has someone else write it for him).

After 450 miles of hiking, I find myself walking through Agua Dulce, CA. Only 70 miles from Oxnard, I'm as close as I'd care to get to Monroe Slavin.

You should trademark ending a question with a period. I've never seen a point to you using question marks anyway.

How many conference games against your definition of top tier MAC opponents has Ohio lost by 9.5 or more points since July 17, 2012? (Excluding Northern Illinois)

I've forgotten and the suck from Oxnard, California is much stronger than Oxford, Ohio out here. Maybe you can remind me.

What are you trying to say?

In your travels, is Coach Solich still 11 years in without a MAC title, with several crashing losses a year over the past several years, still mediocre--or is it different on your hootin' and hollerin' trail?
