An interesting article that dances around the main reason G5 schools aren't allowed to be in the football championship mix: M-O-N-E-Y. He talks about budgets but not about payouts. The "P" schools don't want to the G schools to share in the enormous pot of money that comes with a football title. We get a few peanuts from one of the New Year's bowls instead. If the other sports had a giant payout like football does, we'd be locked out of those, too.

You can't just sit there and say the payout dispersement is the issue. It's the big teams and their throngs of fans that drive the ratings, buy the tickets, fill the stands and fill up hotels in bowl cities. Access is an issue and everyone should be given a fair shot to get there, but why does Ohio get to say they deserve more of the pot when we take 2000 people to a bowl game with $24 tickets? I think our 8 win season last year warranted a bowl game, but if you want a better bowl with a bigger payout, you have to sell 10-15k tickets, then better bowls will start offering you earlier because they will see the dollar signs.

You're spot on. We probably haven't sold 15,000 tickets total for all the games we've gone to lately.
We don't have the number of fans to be big time football, sorry that's the truth.

Exactly. If a team brings the fans to games, the big bowls will want them, and conference won't matter. Of course, the big conferences will also want them, too.

The story in football is that when a school becomes a title contender they are absorbed by a power conference. Florida State and Penn State were added to the ACC and B1G respectively. Then a decade later Virginia Tech and Miami. Most recently it was Utah and TCU who joined the club. That trend is at an end because the power conferences have become so big and the money they make so huge that nobody outside the club is worth a full share of it. This means more Boise State's will develop that don't have a P5 institutional profile and stuck outside the system. Eventually they'll make the playoff, perhaps by forcing more access to the system.

Don't give me this nonsense about G5 teams don't "deserve it" because they don't have as many fans. How could they? The first time Ohio football was on national television was Frank's home debut in 2005.

Let's not pretend that Wake Forrest deserves 4X the revenue share as Boise State.

There is not a sports league on this planet that splits its league revenue 80/20. It is corrupt, there is no justification for it.

Penn State had been a power for years before they joined the B1G.

My wife is a huge PSU fan and has read a number of books about PSU and Joe Paterno.
He never wanted to join a conference.
He felt their program could do better as independents.
But, as the college football landscape changed,including bowls and T.V. coverage,he realized PSU needed to join a conference.

You make some good points. However the media will pay for results/viewers and the G-5 numbers are pretty abysmal I'm guessing. As to your 80/20, there is no other "league" that has 130 teams either. The disparity in interest between the top 40 and bottom 40 is immense. Not really in the same league at all.

The issue isn't really about selling tickets or eyes on the tube. It's about access. The system is rigged against G5 schools and always will be so long as the selection committee (1) is made up exclusively (or almost exclusively) of grads and officials from snob-conference schools and (2) uses "strength of schedule" as an overwhelmingly weighted factor in choosing who's in the playoff. A G5 team will first of all have increasing trouble scheduling snob schools as the snob conferences put more pressure on their members to play other snob schools. And even if a G5 team were able to play and beat three or four really good snob schools during the course of a season, more than likely the committee would downgrade its strength of schedule because of its conference opponents. Even though many snob conference teams are on a par with some of the G5 conferences.

This entire thread highlights one reason why I come to Athens for College Football to tailgate and hang out with friends. The game is just the excuse to get together. Conversely, I come to Athens for basketball strictly for the game itself.

Even though I cheer for my Bobcats, and come down for every Saturday game at home, the level of the greed of college football has turned me off. I don't watch more than 2-3 bowl games, and I don't watch entire days of football in the way that I used to.

A well paid coach with a national reputation. When you think about it that vision has largely been achieved. our league doesn't have 130 teams, it has 10 conferences, and all 10 conferences are equal members and deserve equal shares of league revenue.

in men's hoops NCAA Tournament payouts are earned by individual teams but given to the conferences for distribution. Michigan State is one of the biggest earners, Northwestern has never made a tournament appearance. Not once ever. Michigan State and Northwestern receive identical payouts and nobody screams and complains and cries foul and says NW doesn't deserve it.

The Yankees and the Rays receive the same share of league TV revenue, so do the Cowboys and the Titans. Why?

The CFP TV contract lasts for 12 years, at our current rate the P5 will receive over $1 Billion dollars MORE than the G5 during that 12yr period. This kind of split does two things- it keeps the rich rich, and the poor poor.

Agree with your last statement and several others, but disagree that the conferences are equal. They are not for reasons already discussed.
As for the individual team payouts, I can guarantee that there are people complaining about NW getting an equal share, but that seems to be the conference decision. Of course the Big 12 doesn't pay everybody the same and I think it stinks in a way but some of the little guys there stayed in that situation.
Legal issues aside, the big boys can take their ball and go home. What would we do then?

Jeff, I'm curious about why you believe that and I know you are a traveler from your up=close posts. Is it sheer numbers, relative crowd size, local alumni filling in in-conference venues, frequency (multiple away games with Cats attending)?

Whenever I have traveled for football, and it's not that frequently, I've been impressed by the number of 'Cats in the crowd.
