Poor Marshall. Wonder how all the humble pie tastes.

I'd take them back no question. Even if we have 13 teams.
Not me! I agree, poor Marshall. Don't want them back! Why would the MAC even consider after taking them back once only for them to look for "bigger and better" and leaving a second time. They deserve what they now have and beware to all of you wanting the same for us. We could end up in their shoes.

Bigger and better isn't gonna happen. It doesn't exist in the college sports landscape with maybe the AAC as an exception, and if UC, UConn, et al leave, it's basically the C-USA all over again. If it were a concern, write in the buyout that makes it very cost prohibitive to leave. Marshall is a good fit for the MAC in my opinion.

Did anyone ever consider that the MAC is better than C-USA. Easy on the travel-budget, regional rivals that produce better crowds that make for more engaging television. I say, "welcome back, Marshall!"

It REALLY depends on who leaves the AAC.

I'm not going to pretend to have any clue what the Big 12 is doing, but even if Big 12 expansion and some other league end up pulling UC and UConn from the AAC, I still think that could be an EXTREMELY enticing league for OHIO.

CURRENT AAC:
East:
Temple
USF
UC
UConn
ECU
UCF
West:
Houston
Navy
Tulsa
Memphis
SMU
Tulane

If the AAC of the future has this as a base...

Temple
Marshall
Houston
Ohio
Memphis
Tulsa

LANDE71 makes a good point... Many of these schools have been BURNED by expansion before... If Ohio were to leave the MAC for a league like this, I would hope that league has some significant contract penalties in place to discourage teams from leaving.

Before the pecking order of conferences was ACC, Big East, CUSA. Big East is gone. The way its set up now its ACC, AAC, CUSA. The AAC is not in the power club but's its the top conference outside of it winning the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl and National Championship's in basketball all in 3 years of existence. The AAC is a good long term goal for the Ohio athletic department along the 10-15 year timeframe in the future. I'd put winning a MAC Championship a 2 year goal, making a CFP bowl a 5 year goal, stadium expansion an 8 year goal all before a conference move.

[/QUOTE]In a way, that was my point. Marshall isn't going to find an option that's better than C-USA, or the MAC, so why not choose the MAC? Local rivals that have an interest in playing you, easier travel budget are both good reasons. Moving to the AAC, which is probably destined to collapse, isn't smart, and that's probably the absolute best case scenario that they have. Why not come back to the MAC for some stability?

I guess from a competitive standpoint in basketball I can see the point of view. Personally, I don't see a scenario where Ohio is a candidate for that conference, despite the fact that we're probably a better candidate th1n a couple teams in there already.

Pie in the sky, I'd rather see a scenario where Marshall comes to the MAC, EMU gives up on sports, and the conference makes a group decision to elevate their profiles in major sports. But that would take a handful of schools taking some pretty big steps.

If the current AAC got raided, and they lost Cincinnati, I don't think it is crazy to think they'd try to add a team located in Ohio. I think currently, we're more attractive than Marshall would be.

I would like to hope that we are. The AAC stands to lose a couple teams in the near future, it's just a matter of when. At that point, a logical decision would be for the AAC and C-USA to blend and make two big divisions in one conference. Most of them are geographically close to each other anyway as they're spread across the country. (if that makes sense?)

Sorry if I missed this reference, but most conferences set up imposing exit fees during the realignment period. Double whammy to Marshall and the rest if they are now stuck with decreased payouts, higher travel costs and disproportionately high hurdles to jump ship.

I didn't read the original article (and won't); any mention of this?

If Ohio was in Marshall's position back then, they would have done the EXACT SAME THING. At the time, Conference USA was expanding and they didn't think virtually everyone would move on to the American (Houston, Tulane, UCF, Memphis, ECU, SMU, Tulsa).

I don't understand why those on here think Ohio is high and mighty over Marshall because Ohio stayed in the MAC. They made a move that made sense at the time. Hindsight is 20/20 of course, so they probably wouldn't have left if they knew all along C-USA was going to fade away eventually.

The MAC, while remaining stable during expansion, is still a second or third tier conference in the grand scheme of things. Marshall wanted more for themselves. And we're gonna pretend we don't want that for Ohio? Cmon.

Exactly. It can only help the league. I'd take Marshall 100/100 times over UMass or Temple again. Maybe not in basketball...but football? Marshall, every time.

Another way there could be a Mac opening would be if there is a Kent takeover of Akron, or other end to Akron.

An observation. Boise State was #3 out of the WAC arguably the worst FBS conference with Idaho and New Mexico State in it at the time. The MWC was a step up and they couldn't get in until 2010. If you asked the average joe football fan they couldn't tell you if Boise was in the WAC or MWC when ranked #3 in the country but they can tell you that Boise beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. MWC & WAC situation is like what the MAC & AAC situation is today. MAC or AAC is not as important as national competitiveness.

The folks pulling the strings, and that includes some over zealous boosters, didn't think a few steps ahead when they left the MAC. They didn't look in the mirror and know who they were and where they were in the pecking order of things. Now they are paying the price.

Marshall doesn't need to be brought back in. Sure they would help the league coffers come football season due to their travel base, but it's not a school I'm clamoring to join due to their history.

Besides, with the MAC at 12 schools and schools that seem to understand their role in the collegiate space, why give up continuity and stability for another unstable school?

Uhhhhhhh to make the league more competitive and to add revenue. I'm sure the MAC offices wouldn't turn away a Marshall if that means getting rid of EMU. Or just keep EMU and tell Marshall to bring someone to the MAC with them. I say WKU.

Could you imagine a MAC West Division in football of WMU, Toledo, NIU, CMU, Balls, EMU and then sprinkle in a Western Kentucky? And adding Marshall to the East Division would finally give the East Division some more street cred.
