App State up 7-0 in the first. This might give us an idea of what to expect against them.

13-3 at halftime. Can TN get untracked? Can App State hold on?

App up 13-3 at the half. It's on SEC Net but I can't watch it because Mussberger is doing pbp. I can't believe he's getting the Vin Scully Award. Anyway, I just wonder if Tenn has been reading its press clippings too much. Win or lose tonight, I expect them to be a much different team when we see them.

If anything, this shows that Appalachian State's for real and Ohio doesn't look so bad losing to this team on a last second field goal in the Camilia Bowl last year.

Oh could this be enjoyable.

Worst part is our offense decides to score any sort of TD's against App State we win. But at any rate, we'll wait and see what our offense does this Saturday before I say we can roll into Rocky Top and stun them.

Happy for App St but this makes it a lot harder to sneak up on TN now.

Great effort, but questionable clock management on last possession of regulation. Should have been able to attempt a FG.

I said last year that I though Ohio drew the toughest bowl foe in the MAC. We had some naysayers on the board, but App State is a good football team.

Not only them, the top tier of the Sun Belt is pretty darn good. Georgia Southern pasted WMU last year and has had their own big upset (Florida) and close calls (Ga Tech, NCSt, Georgia). Will be interesting to watch Toledo and Arkansas State tonight, the Red Wolves will be good.

It's a shame the Sun Belt doesn't play a round-robin season. Some teams don't get to play each other. They're planning on more expansion and adding a title game in the near future.

Tennessee's playcalling was wretched. They had the advantage in athletes out wide...and they only took one shot deep....which resulted in a 67 yard TD pass. I get that maybe you want to play things close to the vest against a supposed "inferior" opponent when you have a big game the following week, but how close to the vest is a go route?

It would have been nice if App State had this year's kicker last year.....that poor kid isn't ever going to forget that shanked extra point....

L.C., you are spot on about App State. They were a very good football team last season, and they are very good again this season. It drives me crazy the way all the talking heads and the big boy networks are only interested in the Power Conferences and the race to the national championship game. There is so much more going on besides those conferences and teams. I watch the big race, but I am not focused entirely on those teams. There are many great programs and schools to follow with true student athletes who are fun to watch!! With humble apology to one poster here, there is a great deal more to college athletics than the national championship or the league championship. Enjoy it all. Go Bobcats !

I never expected Tennessee to massacre App State but I was certainly surprised by how close the game was. Was guessing maybe a 35-17 outcome, with the game never much in doubt by the second quarter. Credit to the Mountaineers for representing us "smaller" programs well last night. Tennessee was fortunate to win and I think will work out their issues and go on to a strong season. Definitely seem to be a program that plays to the level of their competition.

Fun fact from last night:

Tennessee's offensive coordinator is Mike DeBord. He was also Michigan's offensive coordinator when they lost to Appalachian State in 2007.

Not sure about their clock management at the end of regulation. They had a 3rd and 5 from the TN 37 with more than 20 secs left and, according to ESPN, one TO left. Instead of taking the TO, they let the clock run and tried to run a play. It was pass that turned into a scramble, and the clock ran out before the QB got out of bounds. If they in fact did have a TO, take it, run the play and clock the ball if you get a first down.
