Morning practice
19 players on sidelines, another in pads but basically can't move
Walkon QB not here
2 of 6 TE's held out
New RB Emmanuele has calves bigger than Irons, he is a stocky dude. Looks pretty good to me

Favorite part of practice is having the coach 5 feet away with the bull horn blowing just as the punter is kicking. Pretty funny.
Re: Walkon QB, read he just started "acclimation period" not sure what that will mean.
He was at practice and throwing yesterday. Strange not to see him there today.

Likely he will be the scout team QB. He might have book/film work to do.

So many guys held out with injuries with only two scrimmages held, with not much live hitting. I wonder how we'll hold up in the ferocity of live-game hitting.

There are a lot of guys out, but most of the injuries don't sound serious, and I hope they will all be able to play once the games start. I get the feeling they are being extra cautious. Once the season starts, they will play hurt, but there is no reason to practice hard when hurt, at this point in the season.

L.C., pretty sure Monroe very well understood all you took the time to explain.

No concern about qb?

Our starter has not started a game and has thrown only 53 balls (about two games worth) and neither of our backups has played at all.

It could work out but would you design that as ideal...one injury or other situation away from having our total qb package having absolutely no experience at all.

I looked back in Ohio football history, and I don't see any good examples of similar situations. That doesn't mean they don't exist at other schools, nor that they necessarily end badly. Windham is a 5th year Senior who has been around the program a long time, and who has both talent and familiarity with the system. If he can use his maturity and experience together with his natural talent, and can take full advantage of the other offensive talent on the team, he may surprise skeptics. Here are two examples with which I'm familiar, where similar situations arose:

1. Gerry Gdowski (former Ohio football coach, now at Vanderbilt): Played on the Freshman team in 1986 where he was 16-49 for 336 yards. In the next two years, 1987-88, he completed a combined 6-10 passes for 72 yards, and was named the starter for 1989. As a Senior starter with virtually no experience, he was 71-136 passing for 1326 yards with 19 TDs and only two interceptions, an incredible pass efficiency rating of 177.3. Nebraska was 10-2 that season.

2. Keithen McCant - As a fifth year Senior, McCant had never been higher than third on the depth chart prior to becoming the starter mid-way through the first game of 1991. In his four prior years, he was a combined 2-4 passing, for 32 yards, with no TDs and 2 interceptions. In his Senior season, he compled 97-168 for 1454 yards with 13 TDs and 8 interceptions, a pass efficiency rating of 146.5. He led Nebraska to a 9-2-1 record in 1991, and a conference championship, and went on to a successful career in the CFL.

These are nothing more than data points. Fifth year Seniors can perform well, if they can use their maturity and ability well. I'm rooting for Windham to perform well this season, and to surprise skeptics, as did Gdowski and McCant. I believe that Greg can do it, and he has my full confidence.

Was Monroe implying Ohio losing two QBs was by "design?"

Way to be purposefully the-opposite-of-intelligent, 2. I was in no way implying this situation is by design.

And all the others who just had to take my thought negatively, here it is again..to penetrate your density: Is lead qb with no starts and a total of 53 live throws and all back-up qb's not having played a live down a thing that might dent one's hope, that might give one cause for concern?

It's a question.

And, the reasonable answer--whether you love or hate Solich or me--is that you should be concerned....one play or circumstance away from being led by a qb with no live game experience.

That's a reasonable thought.

Tell me just how that is a slam against anyone.

Be blindly loyal to Solich...accept that he's not as bad as we-used-to-be-worst-in-nation and that no MACC in 11 years is no problem.

But don't let that distortion blind you to a reasonable discussion of whether we should be concerned about the quality of play that we may get from our qb situation given the FACTS.

Since you repeated your question, I'll repeat my answer. It's not ideal, but neither is it the end of the world. Let's see how the season develops.

Monroe you've got to work with the cards that were dealt. Peden isn't the best stadium in the MAC and Solich isn't the best coach in the MAC. When its football season its time to support the team anyway and not let the issues stop you.

Every quarterback in NCAA history started his career having no experience at all. That doesn't mean Maxwell can't be good.

I agree entirely.

Because... M.O. at this stage it would be impossible to disagree.

But only one qb who has live game experience and he's only thrown 53 balls...If you were doing a pre-season review of the MAC, would you mention this as a concern?

Of course, QB inexperience has been a trademark of the Solich era.
Sometimes it has not been a problem but for the most part it limits what we can do offensively.

How much do you think we will run Windham against Tennessee , Kansas or better MAC teams?

TT was our most inexperienced starting QB in the recent era but he had some Frosh PT and then a red shirt year before starting at NMSU as a RS Fr.

I firmly believe that if the offensive line remains healthy, at the end of the year people will consider Windham among the best QB's in Ohio history. He had a long road, but I think he's ready, and I think he has the players around him to have a great season. He certainly has the arm.

Hot Take: Windham would have been the starter last year if he hadn't had the year off for that drug arrest/issue/whatever that was.

That's where I'm at....

Having a career come to an end is a sad situation for JD. Missing your Senior Year is just a terrible draw.

I do think Windham will do fine. None of our options were going to produce an All-MAC QB. Thus, I don't feel like things are much different with Windham at the controls and see a benefit to Maxwell getting snaps.

Here's my hot take:

Before camp started Frank said he was going to "take risks" this year. After watching him coach for 10 years, I'm not sure he's capable of that. But JD leaving the team forces Frank to take the risk (Windham) over the reliable game-manager QB (JD). If Windham starts to gain confidence and play well, this team could actually be much better than anticipated. At a minimum, it won't be boring!

Stites went to my hometown high school. It's neat to see a guy who put in those years of work in Athens finally earn a scholarship. Here's hoping he contributes in the defensive backfield - we need for him to.
