Ferentz gets a 6 year contract extension (through 2025) plus a pay bump to $4.5 million per year. The buyout is ridiculous. Per ESPN:

"Under the new deal, if Iowa were to fire Ferentz for reasons other than a scandal or physical incapacity, he would be owed 100 percent of his guaranteed money in 2016 and 2017 and 75 percent of it between 2018 and 2020. For each of the years from 2021 to 2025, Iowa would owe him 50 percent of his salary. For each year between 2016 and 2020 that the Hawkeyes win at least seven games, one of the years from 2021-2026 would convert to a 100 percent buyout."

If he can go 7-6 every year for the next five years, he'll make $45 million, guaranteed. Or he can go 1-11 this season, get fired, and make $30 million, guaranteed.

Corn futures must be up.

Iowa's Big Ten West title/championship game appearance and Rose Bowl invite (albeit a rough outing) were probably key bargaining chips for Kirk on this. While it ended with two painful losses (in different ways) it was still the most wins in school history and will probably rank with the '85 team in fan lore.

I know the Hawkeye Nation had some restless members with Ferentz's good but not great teams as they had not done too much of note since the Brad Banks era, with the exception being the 2009 team that won the Orange Bowl. Last year should tide them over for a while although the West is pretty open right now with Wisconsin looking like the chic pick with their win over LSU.

Hayden Fry will probably forever the the gold standard there but Ferentz will go down as a loved coach too long term, I think.

And in the immortal words of Hayden Fry.......some advice for all of you....

Good, not great seems right to me. And to think that he was the highest paid coach of all, just a few years ago. Personally I'm not a big fan of Ferentz. I'm glad they paid him that much, we'll see if they get their money's worth. I don't think they will.

All this just shows how much money that there is in big time football.

After a three year stretch where they won at least 10 games, the win totals have been totally sporadic.
