Topic: Season Ticket Sales Set Another Record

"All told, season ticket sales have nearly tripled over the last four seasons – and now stand at over 8,000 total season tickets for the first time in program history. Over those four seasons, total season ticket revenue has also increased 182%."

"Bobcat fans have also led the MAC in home attendance for the last four seasons. Last season, four home crowds exceeded 22,500 in paid attendance."

I would love to see the breakdown by season ticket type. My guess is that the vast majority are family packs which is fine because it gets folks in the stadium.

Up 182% while sales are up 300%, shows that a lot of these are family pack seats. And when you take into account the increase in prices over the years, hmmm.

It shows we've got a long way to go to justify a stadium expansion. 8,000 seats doesn't even fill up the home side of Peden Stadium. Ticket prices can't go that much higher in Athens. Tickets for Marshall on the 50 yard line range from $35 to $45 dollars. Ohio to get more revenue needs to push up to 15,000 season tickets. Oversell the stadium like Oregon does and that means shrinking the student section down so be it.

I am probably wrong but my guess is that 8,000 tickets DOES fill the Tower Section of Peden. If it does not, it has to be fairly close. I can't see the Tower Section seating much more than 8,000 - 10,000 seats total.

Incredible to see the work of that sales staff there. For someone who worked in that office prior, it's been incredible to see the relationships those guys develop over their time there and move onto bigger jobs within the industry. Never hurts when ya got stability in there in regards to the guy running that sales operation there.

Maybe that's how coaching staffs should work: utilize the network for younger guns, when they get good enough, move them onto bigger and have them give ya someone to take their role. Novel concept eh?

Correct. Sales are up 200% and Revenue is up 182%. Family packs have risen faster than other seats, but the sales growth in not exclusively in Family packs.

How can anyone seriously talk about expansion when at half time we have 8,000 fans if we are lucky and one side is 80% empty? The day I see 25,000 at the END of a game is the day I talk about expansion!

What percentage of fans at our games are there primarily to see the band? I'd guess a good 25-30% if I had to put a number on it.

I'd argue that's not a bad thing - it gets fans there. But it's certainly unique to us.

Compared to other college stadiums I've been to, our crowds I find are very akin to minor league baseball. Folks are there for entertainment, to socialize, etc. For better or worse, the game is - more or less - a side show for a majority of the crowd.

That's not to say that we don't have our die-hards, but those fans are minimal. A lot of the crowd is made up of band fans, youth groups and casual observers.

Thinking out loud here...if you were to drop Akron's stadium in place of Peden, I wonder how many more casual fans(students and locals) would attend. I also wonder if it would stem some of the early exits. On the field, would our recruiting be better?

THANK YOU!!! Ohio doesn't need to expand Peden. It's the perfect size as is. Most of the games the stands look pretty full (at least for the first half) but there's still seating available. Having crowds attracting close to capacity also drives people to secure tickets (such as season tickets) so not to be left out. Look at the Convo. Ohio has the best attendance in the MAC and regularly plays in an arena over half empty. We do not need that for football too.

I have never understood why when the football team is away we do not have a band performance? Great way to raise revenue, sell tickets, concessions, put on a 45 min performance (half-time and post game), every one leaves happy, the Athletic department rakes in the cash. After all if 30% of 24,000 people are coming to the game just for the band that equals about 7,000 people, which would fill one side of the bleachers and provide a great atmosphere, and rake in around $140K per weekend.

Not at all, 90% of the issues here are a result of an 87 year old facility with no storage or operational space for the little things that fans expect today. Our attendance is setting records very single week and year upon year and the move up would benefit all of our programs.

I love the band but the football game is why the overwhelming majority show up. If memory serves there have been early games at Peden in which the band wasn't back and the house was full. Nationwide students are lame and leave early unless it's a marquee game. I agree that a good test would be to have a band performance on a Saturday when the teams out of town. Hold it at the Convo and see what happens.

Talk about a high wire balancing act. If we maintain our present course of doing well for a MAC team as far as season ticket sales go, but don't become a MAC power we risk losing our momentum. If we expand Pedan and schedule big time teams but don't win the majority of games (which would be somewhat of a small miracle) we could lose money, prestige--in addition to games.

In my post of earlier this week concerning 20 years of MAC football growth, I mentioned that youth football is on the decline and who knows what the future will be for non-Power Conference will be? I concluded we needed to enjoy our growth and success, but I am not sure what the means for us 20 years down the line. With all of the data, demographics and analytics at our disposal, I don't know if anyone truly has any idea what MAC football will look like twenty years from now.
