Not only the parade route stinks, the whole parade stinks. I've been boycotting it for the better part of a decade. Floats now consist of a coed on the back of pickup truck. There are almost no high school bands. The parade stops way too much, so that those on the reviewing stand can see stand-in-place performances. There is nothing innovative or clever or interesting in the whole parade, save for the alumni band, and I can see them at halftime of the game.
A different idea:

Route: Gather at Intramural fields. Wind through East Green dorms. Right down South Green drive to Richland. Up Richland and right to "new" Baker. Left on Univ. Terrace. Everyone (except bands) goes down jeff hill (or whatever) where the parade ends.

College Green Concert: Have a 110 and Alumni band hook a left at end of university terrace and head to college green for a 3-4 song jam session. This sends the route through campus and uptown at the end. And, keeps the route away from the plethora of juvenile, boorish, insulting, drunk students who can't handle alcohol. (These morons are why the parade will never be on Court ST.)

Close Court Street to traffic until game time - or screw it, all day. Add a little Octoberfest/tailgate atmosphere with local beer and food only: Jackie O's, Little Fish, Devils Kettle, Avalanche, etc.? Do what Athens and OU do second best: party.

I remember hearing a couple of years ago that the parade organizers had essentially outlawed any sort of constructed float due to safety concerns. Any knowledgeable people able to speak to the truth of that story?
I remember one year the float in front of the group I marched with got caught on a power line. 2004 maybe? But I don't think that was the last year of constructed floats.

This year, I suspect the fun will be navigating the curb/median at the turns from Union onto Congress and then onto President Street. That seems like a pretty narrow street for some of the trailers to turn.

I like the parade route this year more than the past couple years, but overall I agree it is a below average route. The Homecoming Parade route lately seems like they tried to imagine the most boring possible Parade route.

I've got two proposals:
1st route
1. Assemble at McCracken Field.
2. Left on Playground Dr.
3. Left on Mill
4. Mill merges with West State.
5. Left on Court.
6. Court straight on down to President Terrace or Park Place whatever the devil that road is called.
7. End parade at top of Morton.

2nd route
1. Assemble at McCracken Field
2. Right on East Union
3. UP JEFF HILL
4. Right on S College Street.
5. Left on Mill
6. Merge with West State
7. Left on Court
8. Whoever is still standing after I made them start the parade walking up Jeff Hill gets a handshake from me.

On a serious note, I think it'd be really cool to send the parade DOWN Richland. Watching the band walk down Richland Ave Bridge would be pretty cool and now that they put up barriers along the sidewalks on each side this would make for pretty ideal viewing I think.

I think this is a really sensible plan. Close Court from Washington to the bottom of the hill.

And I really like the idea of ending the parade on College Green. Honestly, I'd suggest sending a nicely worded letter to whomever runs the parade. The idea makes good sense! (so they won't do it.)

Just out of curiosity, what was wrong with old route "back in the day"? The parade would assemble on the east side of town around Morris Avenue, then it would proceed up College Street and then either go to Peden via University Terrace some years and other years they went via Union Street to Presidents Street to Richland Avenue. There were times, also, when they went down Court Street instead of College, also. I, personally, always thought it went more smoothly on College.

Has anyone considered the possibility that once you're over 10 years old, all parades are stupid?

The safety rules are making it hard to put floats in the parade. I understand why they have them, but it is limiting the number of floats.

Please 'splain it to me? It's seems to me it's being overly litigious. We had Homecoming parades with nice floats for 75 years or more without any major mishaps. Life has risks. You don't teach people to be innovative problem solvers who think for themselves by coddling them.

I'd suggest a strongly worded letter to The Post and Athens News.

Not because it'll fix anything, but because it'll be entertaining to read.

Blasphemy. All of my favorite holidays include a parade:

Homecoming
Thanksgiving
St. Patrick's Day (kiss me, I'm Irish)
Mummer's Day (known outside Philly as New Year's Day)

They also include beer & booze. Maybe that's what it is. ;)

Amen, Bro'. I'm still up for an entertaining parade. My all-time fave I got to see only once - in 2012. It has been held annually on the first weekend in September for some 450 years. It's the closing highlight of a celebration called Pfifferdaj (translates as Feiffer's or Minstrel's Day) and it's held in the Alsacian village of Ribeauville. What I say about it next might strike you as hyperbole but assuredly is not. To wit,the parade runs about 4 hours and I was sorry it ended.

Early each year a village team settles on a theme. In 2012 it was the Legend of King Arthur. Then villagers get cracking on building floats, each of which is a playlet that tells part of the legend. About 30 floats. Plus more of the legend being told in playlets in between the floats. Plus a dozen bands all decked out in medieval uniforms.

The village - nestled between vine-covered hills with mountains rising at its north end - is only about 3 blocks wide. But it's about a mile and a half long. On the morning of parade day, roads into the village are blocked. Each person wanting to see the parade must pay 10 euros to enter the village. The year I attended more than 30,000 jammed the Grand Rue (winding main street).

Village population is about 3,000-4,000 and I'd say a majority are building floats or taking acting parts or both.

Try googling Ribeauville Pfifferdaj. I'm hoping to see it again.

Bull shit. Think Rose Parade, St. Patrick's Day Parade, Macy's Parade. Liability/safety is a convenient excuse to do nothing.

Stupid question......let's say I get to the grassy tailgate lot with my blue pass in time to find a spot to park. Then let's assume that over the course of the day I've consumed too many mystic mama's to drive back to the hampton inn. Will my vehicle be ok parked there until Sunday morning or will it get towed? Anybody with any insight?

The amount of inspection required is crazy. I served on a staff group for years and we always had a float. We were exempt from the high number of inspections during the process and only had to be inspected the day of the parade. We are no longer exempt, we normally built outside of the city since most employees live out and this has prevented us from having a float. Alan, you may not want to believe it, but the hassle from these rules have prevented and discouraged floats.

Things I will be thinking of instead of meetings this morning:

1 - Mystic Mama, Chomolungma, Mandala, etc etc.
2 - Drumline at the J-Bar
3 - Casa Nueva
4 - Alumni Band
5 - Rufus
6 - Donkey Coffee

Screw it, I think it's time to leave for Athens....hold my calls.

I "plus-oned" to fast. I don't doubt regulations are a major problem. If the city is heavily policing the floats then I agree it would result in fewer floats. The fear of liability is choking the life out of living.

I can't speak about the Columbus Day parade, but the Rose Parade floats are built by people working for large companies and professional float builders.

Macy's has people working year round on theirs.

I know the floats used for NYC sports parades pretty much come from 1 place.

They use the same chassis and just change colors and logos.

Where will the 110 stop and play their one song for the "review stand" ?? How bout the Alumni band? Will they play a song at the same spot ??? It was making too much sense to have the parade use the best viewing area for the most people out in front of the student center. The hillsides and elevation above the end of court street and the student center front doors provided a huge crowd a great spot to see our bands and then tumble on down to Peden and Tailgreat ! Of course, the Homecoming Committee has put a stop to the best viewing area on campus. Crazy. I have heard via the grapevine that the 110 will no longer stop and play at Tailgreat on the way into the stadium. Is that rumor true also ?? What are we doing ?? Trying to eliminate all things that might add to the excitement of the Game Day experience ?

I graduated in 1978. Visited frequently over the years. I've got a son and a house there now and I've never even seen a Homecoming Parade. There wasn't much Greek life at OU in the mid-1970's. I think the movie Animal House (released in 1978) brought that back.

I really miss the trains in Athens. Beyond those, when I walk around and reminisce I can still pick out all the spots I once frequented. Places like The Center Slice, The Frontier Room, Swanky's, The Deli, Big Red Tomato, Hopsings, The Longbranch, Harpo's, Mountain Leather, Roaring 20's, The Junction, Chicalini's, Casa Que Pasa, The Back Door, Baskin Robbins, Borden Burger, the Townhouse, The Graduate, Bojangles, The Pub, Mary Johnson's, The West End Tavern, The Little Ritz, The Union, Vere Smith Audio, Angelo's, The Varsity Theatre, Paul and Tony's, The Blue Ruin, Frisch's Big Boy.....
