In a word, "No." Under the circumstances, there was really no acceptable explanation that could be given short of a family tragedy, which was not the case. The next choice, Jack Lengyel, certainly was an honorable man who did the best that could be expected. His personality, though, was nothing like that portrayed in the "We are Marshall!" movie.

Nice try to rationalize this behavior. If you'd been at his introduction as the new coach in Veterans Memorial Fieldhouse, where he received a standing O that lasted a very long time, with tears streaming down the faces of many when he accepted the position publicly and said what he was going to do to bring the program back, you might conjecture in a different direction. Also, not everything in that movie was correct. It might surprise you to learn that they Hollywoodized things in several instances. He made a commitment and then backed out a few weeks later. In normal circumstances that would just have been a little blip. In this particular situation it was like a knife in the back. If you don't understand that, there's nothing that I can say to make you come down from the seat of the scornful.
