I'll give Doc Holiday credit he had his guys playing hard in this one to limit the magnitude of the blowout. He confused Lamar Jackson enough to limit passing to 24/44 in passing but for him that is 5 TD's. He goes 36/44 and Louisville hangs 80 on them.

I saw the first part of the game on TV. I was surprised by the turnout by the MU fans after the Akron game. There were over 40,000 at the game and they stripped the stadium with green and white sections.

Who really cares about Marshall and their thugs?
Like the one who put a late hit, out of bounds on Sprague when he was clearly laying face down and cost him his career after two surgeries. I mean who really cares?

Cabell Co support: 41.8%
Stadium capacity: 38,227
Available seats: -2,365


Athens Co population: 64,681
Ohio v Gardner Webb attendance: 22,265
Athens co support: 34.4%
Stadium capacity: 24,000
Available seats: +1,735

It's true, a higher percentage of the population of Cabell Co attended the Marshall game than Athens Co residents attended the Ohio game, but that's more of a result of stadium capacity than community support. The 1,735 unsold seats in Peden account for 2.7% of the pop of Athens Co.

I am just curious about the above 'availabe seats" statistic? The attendance for the MU game was 40,592?

Look up the population for the counties that border Cabell county and you will see a significant difference. Add up the population of Cabell's bordering counties and adjacent counties including Boyd in KY and you go north of 200,000 people. Not to mention you have Charleston right down the street.

Huntington is a much bigger metropolitan area, probably 3 -4 times as much without looking it up, Marshall has a much more inspired following and Louisville brought more than the 20-30 people who came from Gardner-Webb. Not going to lose any sleep about their great attendance. Just do what we can do to get butts in the stands here.

Pretty impressive draw really considering we were playing an underwhelming opponent. Didn't hurt to have parents weekend going on. I'd be curious how many of Ohio's 88 counties we had represented in attendance (not counting students). I would guess Wood County, WV is the most populous county that Athens County borders?

Marshall and most of the other CUSA teams are suffering financially. This new TV deal is hitting the athletic departments where it hurts. As a season ticket holder for both Ohio and Marshall I can tell you that Marshall's season tickets are much more expensive than what I pay at OU. The annual increase at Marshall is impacting season ticket holders as I've seen a steady decline in the last several years. This will likely be my last year as a season ticket holder at Marshall as well. It simply is becoming too expensive to attend a game at The Joan. I think I'll resort to buying my tickets per game in the future.

That being said, I was in attendance at the Marshall game Saturday evening (after attending the Ohio game earlier in the day) and the atmosphere was electric. While Marshall was able to hang with Louisville for about 1 1/2 quarters Louisville's strength and speed eventually won out. It didn't help that Marshall's starting quarterback was sidelined and a true freshman made his debut and some Herd players continued to make stupid decisions related to penalties and personal fouls.

The CBSSN did a great job of camera coverage, even having the "drone camera" hovering above the field and the stands for the game. The downside, of course, is all of the TV timeouts. Maybe it is just me, but CBSSN seems to take longer TV timeouts than the other sports networks. (Of course maybe I had reached my limit in "bleacher sitting" for the day too!)

We are at 90%+ capacity with and FCS school, we don't need a top 25 team to be full. We fill Peden on a regular basis.

I've noticed that both CBS and CBSSN take more breaks than ESPN. It's the broadcast model (you only get revenues from advertising) and not the cable model (you get revenues from advertising AND cable subscribers). It's really annoying when they take a TV timeout both before and after kickoffs and punts. You get about 15 seconds of action over a five-minute span.

We were at 92% of capacity last Saturday against an unranked FCS/D-IAA team. Opening weekend we were at 96% of capacity against Texas State. If we were hosting the No. 3 team in the Nation in FBS/D-IA I would expect not only a record crowd but also we would be turning people away. In addition thereto, it is only a 3 hour drive from Papa Johns Cardinal Stadium on the campus of the University of Louisville to Joan C. Edwards Stadium at Marshall University straight across I-64. How many of those in the stands made the 3 hour drive from Louisville?

Time to upgrade and expand! A newer nicer stadium would be a huge bonus to our program and community. Could you imagine what we'd do if we had Akron's quality of venue. Hell this board would be boring with no complaints about the troughs, small concourse, concessions, TV's. And just think of how many more people would come as a result of a better game day experience. Probably even be able to sell a couple boxes to the fat cats.

There was a large contingent of folks from U of L. If you are familiar with The Joan the entire visitor sections from field to the top was filled as well as the top quarter or so of the adjoining section. Several other Cards fans could be seen throughout the stadium as their red attire was noticeable since Marshall was having a green/white "Stripe the Stadium" event. They traveled well but with the #3 team in the nation I'd expect no less.

I'm not sure we have to think about it much. If I recall, we have had some of the bigger home crowds in recent years when Marshall was the visiting team.

All I know is that Marshall fills at least one of the flying stands, while Gardner--Webb had maybe 30 people there. Opponents matter.

I recently asked this on another thread and got no response, so I'll try again.

Anyone know why the Ohio-Marshall series was discontinued? I'm of the belief that the two should play one another every September.

Pure speculation, but I think it goes back to the year we cancelled the basketball game on them to play osu instead. I think that's been ironed out now, but the tiff resulted in a couple year gap in the series.

I think the time in the season and the day of the week the game is played matters more. As I recall (and being too lazy to dig up specific facts), attendance really seems to tail off for home games after the Homecoming game is played and when MACtion weekday games take over. Attendance seems to tank after the Homecoming game generally.
