Oops, I missed that move. My condolences to him.

Wes, I would take 5 years at a P5 school and a happy retirement check (probably 25 million total in the 5 years including buyouts) vs muddling around in the MAC, Sun Belt, etc. for 20 years and taking in $5-7 mil.

WMU is in the Top 25 this week in both major polls. Power 5 is a place with endless expectation and not very many coaches will last over 5 years. That means endless rebuilding cycles. Ohio was able to benefit with Solich available who then as a veteran coach spends 12 years at a G5 bringing the benefits of stability. In many respects G5 life is better than P5 with its excesses.
I think any coach would be happy to take the P5 excesses. Les Miles is getting a $10 million buyout to not coach anymore. You'd have to toil away in Athens for almost 20 years to make that kind of money. Fleck, or any other successful G5 coach, will always run to the big money trough. You and I would do the same thing.
I wasn't referring to what a coach would do. What I'm referring to is I rather Ohio be in a good G5 situation over an unwinnable P5 situation where its paying huge amounts of money and buying out coaches every 3 years. The ideal price point is where Ohio is right now. Take Saul Phillips in basketball he is paid what 550,000 a year? He's paid decently, enough to strap him in with a large buyout so if he leaves he is costing the university nothing. Ohio did well with Frank and could do it again with a veteran SEC coach who lost his job because of an unwinnable situation. Frank showing that a coach can win 100 games in Athens helps. I'd like a coach with a reputation as a great closer in Florida recruiting battles.

Casper, read the bios. Coach Solich and many on his staff have already done their P5 time, Seems they have decided better to work at Ohio for Dr. McDavis than work at P5 at the pleasure of big donors. Perhaps they value security and the chance to settle with family in a fine place like Athens. If you are all about $$$ I won't try to explain it to you.

Or maybe they were unable to get better jobs?

Or, maybe McDavis had chips implanted in their brains and has exerted mind control over them ever since. The possibilities are endless! ;-)

Money is not a factor in determining the "better" job. JMHO.

Oregonian sports writer brings up P.J. Fleck for the Oregon job...
Comment section reacts poorly:

http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/i...

Normally I would never recommend reading the comment section. Canzano, however, brings out the worst (best) in the Duck fans.

P.J. Fleck and Phil Knight meeting each other might cause the universe to collapse upon itself.

My favorite thought in the comment section:

"Any coach I have to Google to find out who he is should not be a candidate."

Solid logic there. Googleableness as a hiring criterion.

I contend that if someone has to Google to find out who a coach is that the person should really not have an opinion on who Oregon hires anyway. If you watch enough college football you should know who PJ Fleck is.

Fleck + Oregon = 20% bump in Nike's earnings. I love this rumor and I hope it is true, because I need to review my IRA portfolio anyway.

If Stanford beats ND, is ND looking for a new coach?

People keep asking this around the country and I keep wanting to say no. He took them to their first National Championship game since the late 80s/early 90s and has brought in more NFL talent in the past few years than any of his predecessors.

But this is Touchdown Jesus we're talking about. They get really upset when they lose.

I just have to laugh... I saw "TOS" in the subject line and thought this was a Tim O'Shea thread that somehow jumped from the basketball board.
