LSU, Texas, Notre Dame, Auburn, USC, Oregon, Penn State...

That's quite a list of programs with head coaches on serious hot seats. IF all happen, it would be crazy.

Auburn all of a sudden doesn't look that bad. They got beat by teams that are a combined 12-0. Of course, if they end up 4-8 that's a different story.

I'm interested to see how long Georgia Tech puts up with Paul Johnson. In a period where the ACC Coastal was absolute crap, he's only managed two double-digit win seasons. If one big year every few years makes the people in Atlanta happy, then I guess he's the guy.

With all these openings. How long before Navy loses their head coach? He has to be at the top of someone's list.

Not that they're the gospel on such things, but the guys on Mike & Mike this morning believe that Brian Kelley is fine at ND right now. As in, he'll be there next year with little doubt. Charlie Strong, in their opinions, was in big trouble.

It's a funny thing. When you go to these "big" jobs, the odds of keeping said job, as compared to the one the coach was previously in becomes drastically decreased because of unrealistic fan and booster expectations.

He turned down big money to go to BYU last year, he is a Mormon and his son plays at BYU. After turning that down, may not go anywhere. He's been at Navy for 20 years.

There will be more big time openings now and in the future than ever before with all the additions to the power 5 conferences. More big teams on the bubble thus giving us a better chance to knock on bigger bowl games if we can do what Western Michigan is doing right now. They usually put us in the Top 25 around WEEK 7 or WEEK 8 if you go undefeated. WMU should be in top 25 by next week as more power 5s beat on each other. Thank goodness we dont have to worry about the Rutgers type teaams that would squeak by in the end and get a 6-6 season with a bowl game. Those teams will now be 4-8 at best giving more smaller schools opportunities at bowl games.

WMU is in the Top 25 this week in both major polls. Power 5 is a place with endless expectation and not very many coaches will last over 5 years. That means endless rebuilding cycles. Ohio was able to benefit with Solich available who then as a veteran coach spends 12 years at a G5 bringing the benefits of stability. In many respects G5 life is better than P5 with its excesses.

Hadn't thought about power 5s beating on each other. So true.

Gotta love Navy reaching that Air Force type level now where a top 25 season is not a surprise. There are still different ways to play winning football.

My sleeper pick for a big job is Dan Mullen at Mississippi State. I can see him someplace like USC or Texas easily. And doing well.

I think any coach would be happy to take the P5 excesses. Les Miles is getting a $10 million buyout to not coach anymore. You'd have to toil away in Athens for almost 20 years to make that kind of money. Fleck, or any other successful G5 coach, will always run to the big money trough. You and I would do the same thing.

Maybe, but Mississippi State has tumbled this year, and while his previous teams have been competitive in the SEC, he doesn't have the hardware on his shelf to justify ignoring what will probably be a 4-8 or 5-7 season this year. I think he needs to prove his teams can win championships before he gets a big-time gig...and that's probably going to require moving outside of the SEC West.

Not sure that I think Penn State will open. They might fire him next year but not this year. And I don't think they'll ever be able to attract a top tier coach to come into that mess.....at least not until the crazy Paterno cult dies off and that university can go back to a semblance of sanity. O'Brien couldn't get out the door fast enough and took some pointed shots at "the Paterno People" on his way out.

Texas is still a big time job, but it's getting more and more toxic by the year. They've pretty much fired Charlie Strong after 2 seasons + 4 games. The university's most powerful donors are also football crazed boosters who meddle in the program constantly. Their conference is a hot pile of steaming dog crap. They've had one brief 6 year window of being a national power since the mid 70s, yet their fanbase will expect to go to the playoffs every year. Their in-state "little brother" has left them in the dust on the field and in conference affiliation. About the only positive to that job is that you walk away from it set for life financially.

Notre Dame is kind of like Texas except that the coach gets to kill people.

I think going 57-38 and going 4-2 in bowl games, one of those being an Orange Bowl is about the best you're asking for at Mississippi State given the division they're in. He's done an incredible job there.

Agree here about Penn State and the Paterno stigma. It's such a slap in the face to the victims and their families that they honored that guy this year. Just unbelievably naive and awestruck by his God-like status in Happy Valley.

Always? Like hyperbole much? A good reporter would qualify that statement, perhaps saying, "almost always" would be accurate. Careful research would reveal cases where a coach chose to stay at a lower level with less pay for a number of different personal or family reasons. It's a relatively rare but not unknown phenomenon.

Oh, no doubt. Miss. St. is an historically terrible program, and Mullen's been great for them. But college coaching is a "what have you done for me lately?" world, and Mullen peaked about 2 years ago. I would say he is probably an even money bet right now to be fired this season.

(If he beats Bama or Ole Miss this season, I think he probably gets another year....but that's a big if...)

I don't know. The expectations at Miss St are probably a little more realistic than say LSU.

This is why I say he's my sleeper pick. When you get Mississippi State to #1 in the country (which they were ranked for 1-2 weeks in 2014), you can run a program. That was the SEC, not some mid-major.... Someone smart should go after him. And, he coached the chosen one (Tim Tebow) so the gods will rule in his programs favor for sure.... (Plus, his wife is a Bobcat.)

So with all of these potential openings, who are everyone's most attractive candidates list? Who will be the hottest picks for a promotion?

Here are a few to start with.....

-Tom Herman, Houston: despite the upset from Navy this past weekend, I think many suitors will come calling. My guess is a Brinks truck will be sent over I-10 to try and draw him over to Baton Rouge. Right or wrong I don't see the Bayou Bengal Brass giving the job to Orgeron.

-PJ Fleck, Western Michigan: if WMU keeps up on their current pace and runs the table he will have a lot of programs reach out. He would be able to drop a couple of games yet and would still be on many radars. Will any of them be big enough to really grab his attention? Would he need to go to a higher regarded G5 school first ala Urban Meyer or Brian Kelly/Butch Jones first? Gotta think there will be enough money put up to get him out of Kalamazoo.

-Les Miles: he will likely get offers-question is does he want to dive back in? His preferred style of offensive play only works if you get regular blue chip talent and if he arguably struggled to do that at LSU, how would he do it at a lower level place?

-Brent Venables: is he more of the Bud Foster mold and a career assistant? Has he seen what Chad Morris going through at SMU and maybe wants to stay with what has been built at Clemson?

Another not likely but not impossible situation.....

Jimbo Fisher: I can see LSU going after him as well. If FSU ends up in a second tier bowl I could see him hearing what they have to say as it may be a ticket out of town. He wouldn't leave otherwise IMHO.

LSU obviously is already on the list.

Texas is looking more and more likely. Question is who would want to follow? I guess if they offer enough money you will find someone to wade through that quicksand.

I think BK survives this year but will have to have a banner year next year to survive.

If Auburn keeps on their current pace they will make a decent bowl and keep Gus safe for next year. Only losses are to a pair of currently Top 10 squads. See them going 4-2 in the back half and finishing 8-4.

USC I think will ride things out just to not become a punchline. It's been a revolving door on the coaching office.

Oregon I hope drops Helfrich like a bad habit. I hated the hire when they did it and I saw what is going on coming. He did OK with Chip's leftovers but he is in waaaayyy over his head and it will only get worse.

One other name for a coach to move up is Matt Campbell from Toledo, who's right up there with Fleck as a MAC coach likely to get a new job. Others who are somewhat less likely are Terry Bowden (will anyone want him?) and Scott Frost (only because there is a rumor that Oregon wants him back). Chris Creighton at EMU is doing a good job, but likely he'll need another year or two of solid improvement for that to happen.

A few more names for you:

Phillip Montgomery - Tulsa HC

Jeff Brohm - WKU HC

Scott Frost - UCF HC

Willie Taggart - USF HC

Chad Morris - SMU HC (while he's not done turning them around you can see the flashes of what could be).

Bryan Harsin - Boise State HC (probably a Boise lifer though)

I could absolutely see a guy like Taggart go to Purdue or Vanderbilt and have success. He turned WKU into a bowl contender for the first time and is in the process of another turnaround at USF.
