By a team which wins conference championships


Today, late third quarter, Wisconsin, which generally operates out of the shotgun, faced a 3rd and 2 while leading Northwestern 13-7. Wisconsin moved the qb under center and went to a true two back set, resulting in a running back running for a first down.

Repeat, in case that is not clear: qb under center. two back set.


The sky didn't fall.

Experts didn't debate for hours and hours about the fabulous intricacies of being able to snap a direct handoff from centerls hands to qb's hands even though the usual offense is the shotgun.

Announcers didn't criticize the play while praising the length of time that the coaching staff has stayed together.

By a team which wins conference championships in a conference which isn't remarkably weak





Or, we can have substantial posts, 12 years in, about whether we can beat horrid teams such as Buffalo.

The team is in 1st place in the division, on track to compete for a Championship, the same championship you have been relentless for! They have put together two very good games in a row and have won 7 so far this year! They are doing this by playing "REAL FOOTBALL!" Man, you are too much!

Agree that direct snap should be part of our offense.
I don't understand reluctance to use it especially in short yardage.
We have a 6'3" 225 qb. Direct snap definetly give us an advantage in hitting the line of scrimmage muse faster and less time for the defense to react.

Before the Toledo game I was saying we should do some under-center for a QB sneak in short yardage. Here is what I imagine was a conversation between Frank and Albin after that game:

Frank: Well, good win although I'm wondering what Cats-22 thinks about how we didn't go under center in short yardage situations.
Albin: Yeah, he's probably not happy. Hey is that someone who played for us and wore #22?
Frank: I don't think so, I think it's a reference to the Joseph Heller book "Catch-22."
Albin: Oh. Well, if he wants to do puns that's his right. Who am I to judge? Anyway in the first half a fumbled QB-RB exchange and a snap over Maxwell's head killed two drives. So do you want our QBs to master new skills for the under-center game or do you want us to spend those practice reps mastering what we're already doing?
Frank: I see your reasoning. Alright let's hold off on the under-center. But one problem.
Albin: What's that?
Frank: Which one of us is going to tell Cats-22 the bad news?
Albin & Frank: (laughter)

Frank: We've been so successful, won so many MACC in my 11 years here. No need to change.
Albin: UTM
Frank: I would never consider a radical thing such as direct center snap or two-back set. Those things could lead to a turnover.
Albin: I indeed fear having the ball on offense. It could lead to a turnover.
Frank and Albin: No balls!
Frank: We'll play Gardner-Webb twice next year!
Albin: Incarnate Word!

That's actually really good Monroe. I laughed out loud at "no balls." Well done.

I am with you on the two-back sets and I think the coaches are too when we have more healthy RBs.

I've been thinking we're going to start getting a lot of no-back sets, but now we have DL Knock, moved from WR to RB, so we should be good to continue the one-back sets awhile.

We ran two-back sets until AJ got injured. I find it interesting that no one can fill AJ's shoes here. While not likely, it's just possible that the coaches have determined that none of the other combinations would be very effective running two-back sets. A more likely explanation is that the coaches are too incompetent to even consider a Brown-Irons two-back set.

BTW, on a related topic, I watch several games yesterday and saw examples both of teams in the shotgun that used an under-center play for short-yardage situations and teams, like OHIO, that stayed in the shotgun for short yardage plays. In one case, the announcers even commented that they wondered why the team didn't go under center. I only bring this up to point out that OHIO is not the only school that shuns the under-center option for short-yardage situations. Personally, I'd like to see it, but I don't lose sleep over it either. And, I don't think it's worth ranting about.

At what age does someone turn into the proverbial angry old man? You know that guy. The one who finds fault in everything and can't seem to enjoy anything.

Seeing how Brown and Irons are both banged up and with availability being questionable from week to week it makes sense to not practice something that may not be possible

All three of the running backs have hire averages per carry than AJ. AJ was set to have a great year, but the backs have done fine.
