RS Freshman. Kid is a baller and he's got a long way to go. Everytime I've seen him step onto the field, there's been obvious progression. Imagine what he'd look like with 10 starts under his belt!

Very impressed with a few of his throws tonight. The pitch and catch with Ball in the 2nd was spectacular, and the pass to Papi to start the game was a pretty well thrown ball also. Very excited to see what he looks like in the future, as I hope the rest of the young guys develop into the players they were recruited to be. Could be a very bright future in Athens, Ohio.

He is Austin Everson right now, he needs to improve his accuracy, but he is gutsy.

He may be as scrappy as AE, but Austin never passed like that. Except when he makes a big mistake, Maxwell's passing is uncannily accurate.

I agree with the comparison to Austin Everson.

I think this whole team reminds me of 2006, but with more talent.

We just hadn't seen him play, yet, so we couldn't be sure. I'd say that the consensus was that he'd get some playing time behind Sprague and Windham to prepare him to be the guy next year. As it stands, he'll come in next year as the guy to beat.

This team does remind me of my senior year. Rocky start with a strong finish. My pre-year prediction was 8-4 but they can possibly be 9-3 like we were.

Plus two other things. First, All the wins were by 10 points or less, except Buffalo. Second, the 2006 team, like 2016, played very well on the road, and when it had a bad game, it was at home. The 2006 team did it once (BG), while this team had two (Texas St, EMU).

I hope Maxwell will be a superstar but I'm not ready to call him one just yet. He's a very young QB starting to play well and more importantly, getting some much needed experience. Agreed, it looks like the ceiling on him is very high and that's an exciting thing! If he torches WMU in the MACC, then I'd call him a superstar right then and there but let's wait and see. But for sure, all signs are pointing up!

Instead of the AE comparisons, I wonder if Maxwell is more Tyler Tettleton without the apparent baggage?

I think Maxwell can be a good one, but agree that we should slow down a bit with the superstar label. It wasn't that long ago (Toledo) that he had a pretty bad half of football.

Last night he hit Papi early in the 4th quarter for a 20 yard gain or so, but missed Sebastian who had beaten his man on the play and was wide open for an easy TD.

I'm not at all complaining about a freshman QB going 13-23 for 236 and 2 TD's last night - it was a nice game - but not a great/superstar performance.

One thing I've noticed with Maxwell is that he puts his whole body into the throws he makes, which is exactly what you're supposed to do. Not sure if many of you can picture in your head, but I just remember TT and T3 doing a little short arm flick of the elbow and wrist to get the ball down field. Maxwell looks completely different.

So glad they get this guy for three more seasons because he could end up being the best QB Ohio has ever had. He's shown some flashes this year that tells me if he puts it altogether eventually he could be a special player:

-The TD pass he made to Belack against Toledo was incredible, throwing across his body running the opposite direction about 35-40 yards downfield.

-Showed great touch on the TD pass to Papi against Toledo. Just a little floater over the D was all he needed.

-And of course the money maker 3rd down conversion to Smith against Toledo late in the game. You've gotta have a ridiculous arm to be able to get that one out there. It's a tough throw to make and he puts it right on the money.

-Last night's pass to Ball was mostly Ball's great catch, but Q put it in a place where only Ball could catch it against two defenders. Just a great throw.

There's only one thing I worry about with his development and that's the sometimes stagnant playcalling we've all seen. I hope that doesn't hurt him, but maybe the staff will open it up a little bit more with him realizing what they have with him at starting QB.

Interesting to go back and see how folks on this board reacted to his signing (small school, weak competition, only offer, WTF).

Yet another example on how we on this board are simply fans. Passionate, knowledgeable....but fans, and oh so often not tuned into the inner workings of the game and the evaluation of talent -- left to simply rely on our "eye test" on Saturday (or Thursday)...for what that is worth.

Kid has looked good and he will only get better.

I felt kind of alone, back then, but I liked him a lot. Note my comparison link that I posted 12/6/14, showing the kind of upside that I think he has. He's smart, he hustles, and he has the physical tools. I think he will continue to improve. Playing in very low grade high school football, he didn't see defenses that were comparable to college at all, so he had a lot to learn.
