Win or lose in Detroit, does the outcome determine which bowl we're likely to go to?

Yes but I can't tell you in what way it does.

If we play WMU, the bowl will be the same whether we win or lose -- the one in Mobile.

Agreed. WMU has been THE story this year, so they will likely go to a non-MAC bowl game regardless of whether they beat Toledo or win the MACCG. If they're MAC champs, they likely get a NY6 bowl (although that's not a guarantee, given how the playoff committee has been unimpressed with them). If they don't get a NY6, the B10, ACC and MWC at least will likely be short of teams to fill slots, so WMU will probably get one of their bowls and the other five bowl-eligible MAC teams will fill in the MAC slots. Depends on what kind of deal the MAC can negotiate.

What is that based on. This from the CFN:

MAC

Highest-ranked team from AAC, C-USA, MAC, MW & Sun Belt will play in a New Year’s Six bowl.

The MAC doesn’t have a true pecking order. The bowls matchups are based on best possible games and geography.

– Famous Idaho Potato Bowl vs. Mountain West
– Dollar General Bowl vs. Sun Belt
– Miami Beach Bowl vs. American Athletic
– Popeyes Bahamas Bowl vs. Conference USA
– Raycom Media Camellia Bowl vs. Sun Belt
– Quick Lane Bowl
Conditional if ACC or Big Ten can’t fill a spot.
– San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl
Conditional if BYU or Mountain West can’t fill a spot.

I read that the Camellia Bowl was tied to the MAC champion. If WMU wins, they could go to a bigger bowl. If WMU loses, Ohio is the MAC champ.

Hey, bowl season could go any way, so this is all not set in stone...

The Camellia Bowl is in Montgomery not Mobile.

I thought the only bowls that were allowed to trump the MAC Tie-in bowls were the NY6 Bowls. I'd be pretty upset if I were one of the MAC Bowl Committee's being told WMU's off the table because we got a better offer.

I think you're right on that. The bowls tied to the MAC ultimately have first choice, but a lot of times, negotiations are made to allow a team like Western Michigan into a non-MAC bowl if it is better. It's all a lot of negotiating between the bowls, the league and the schools, so there really is now way to tell which bowl Ohio will get, win or lose, no matter the opponent.

Remember, too, that most bowls are ESPN concoctions, so they would want to have matchups that create the most interest for ratings purposes. A 12-1 WMU vs a "P"5 school would have much more appeal than vs an 8-4 Ark St. Interestingly, Boise might get shut out from the MWC championship game and thus might not get a NY6 bowl. WMU vs Boise somewhere would be very attractive.

Well at least if Ohio does play Houston, Houston's coach will be Texas' new coach by then.

What is that based on. This from the CFN:

CFN is wrong-y-wrong-y-wrong: The highest-ranked CONFERENCE CHAMPION from ACC, CUSA, MAC, MW, and SunBelt will play in a new years 6 bowl. If you're not a conference champion you're not eligible for the NY-6 bowl spot**

**Exception: If a group of 5 team is somehow ranked in the top 4 but not a conference champion they would be in the playoff but not count as the G5 rep in the NY6 bowl games. Complicated, I know.

At least if we were to play Houston, we would change our offense similar to what we did after getting thrashed by Troy

Yes, and did you see SMU thrash Houston???

I'd love to see a game vs Houston! It's a bowl game for crying out loud. I'd love to see the players get a shot at a good opponent over one that no one cares about. Let's face it, there's too many bowls and a lot of games that no one cares about outside of the schools playing in them. If Ohio happens to get one of the good teams out there as an opponent, that's very exciting for the program and players instead of facing some 6-6 Sun Belt or CUSA team. Ohio hung in there with Tennessee and nearly beat Western Michigan. I'd love to see Ohio get one more crack at a really solid team in a bowl.

I agree, just saw where Miami is going to take a crack at Mississippi State, that would be great! I hope like heck we are not stuck with another Sun Belt school

Quick Lane might open up depending on how many ACC or B1G teams get into the NY6. That's a better opponent and payout, although not nearly as fun a location.

Also, there appears to be some shuffling among bowl ties:

Will Fleck be coaching the bowl game? I think without his row-the-boat histrionics on the sidelines that the WMU team might be at sea without a rudder. (Sorry for the mixed metaphor)

When asked the other night if he would be the coach for the bow game he gave the, "we are just going to enjoy this win" answer.
