"The police chief said officers caught two of the men but as of late Wednesday afternoon, one remained at large, even though police knew his identity."

Monroe will use this as evidence of poor recruiting...superior talent would have outrun the police.

ANews headline "Two OU footballers among three arrested in alleged robbery"
Ethical headline "Three arrested in alleged robbery"

First paragraph: "Three Ohio University students, including two who play on Ohio’s football team, were jailed on charges of first-degree felony aggravated robbery early Wednesday morning."

ANews writers/editor portray themselves as well-meaning/innocent journalist, but they have clear agenda that prevents bias-free reporting. Do not confuse this as criticism, as I respect small business and understand there is a very real market for a tabloid in Athens.
You don't really understand the concept of newsworthiness, do you?

By your measure, headlines on Nov. 23, 1963 would have read "Man shot in head in Dallas."
SBH is right. Part of what makes this interesting to people is that football players were involved. I wouldn't have cared to read this story if it had been random students. But because I have a higher interest in football, I was interested in this story. To ID the robbers as football players is essential.

And that's the worst part about this. Things have been cleaned up dramatically around here and then this. Try finding a job if convicted of this.

If I understand correctly, one of them got away but the police know who it is???

Why hasn't he been apprehended yet? Is he in hiding, or is somebody hiding him? If he's a college student, he shouldn't be too hard to find. I truly hope it's not another football player.

Didn't use a two-back set.

Their escape plan was too predictable.

Under the "innocent until proven guilty" philosophy you might think that would be how it works, but the norm is that for very serious charges such as these an independent evaluation of the likelihood of conviction will be made, and action taken based on that. At the very least I expect that they will be suspended pending resolution of the case. As a practical matter that would usually end their career.

if the football players are on scholarship i would think it is note-worthy to identify them as football players and as football players i believe they are considered public figures and as such can be singled out. i have no problem with how this was reported. it's been 30+ years since j-school, but i see no problem here. if the third was a member of the school's leadership, i think that should also be reported. we can argue about the headline, but what is the purpose of a headline? pretty sure it is to draw attention to the story and hope folks read the story. i find it did its job.

If we had the same laws as Colorado my guess is that this thread wouldn't even exist.

School policy is you are removed from school when charged with a felony, so no need of a conviction to "kick them out"

We gotta get those numbers up. Those are rookie numbers. Ohio not even in the top half of college football, and of course behind at least three MAC teams from what we can see. We'll never be able to compete with the MAC west.

If true he just kinda wiped out my praise for the normally well behaved receivers on the team.

Wide receivers are faster than offensive linemen.

What in creation are WOUB, The NEWS, The Messenger and The Post doing?

Nobody's gotten with the authorities on what happened to the one who got away last night!

Meanwhile, Belack was booked during the lunch hour.

Not a peep from WOUB or The Mess! The NEWS broke the story - credit there - but no update? The Post is doing as little as possible, as usual, and not very well, and just tagged onto what The NEWS did.

Unbelievable.

I too was wondering when it was going to finally show up in the news.

Belack was the one who got away last night, and was arrested today.

Simply.......amazing........

I'm dumbfounded. Are these players really this stupid? While we're wasting hours debating the merits of one series on a game long since over, Rome burns. I'm all for letting the judicial system run its course but at first blush this does not look good.

Get rid of them all. Period. End of story. Akron's door will be wide open for them if they want a second chance.

Was a firearm involved?
UNDER OHIO REVISED CODE, a person can be charged with aggravated robbery if they have done one of the following acts while fleeing from, committing or attempting to commit any theft offense: Having a deadly weapon on them or under their control, and displaying the weapon or indicating they have the weapon, or using the weapon; inflicting, attempting or threatening to inflict serious physical harm on another person; having a dangerous ordnance (mounted guns; artillery) on them or under their control.

So...it could have been a dangerous ordnance.

Evidently yet another who could not appreciate his circumstances. Thankfully there is one Elijah Ball who, I expect, will thrive in his opportunity.
