Along the way I learned of a southern grocery chain - Piggly Wiggly. Now, wouldn't that make for a snicker-inducing name for a bowl?
First self-service grocery store in the country. Gotta Love The Pig!

Now you want to go full on South - We can start the Moon Pie Bowl. (though as an ex-client, I can tell you they don't have the cash).
Well, if we're going "to go full on South," other possibilities come to mind:
* The Ochra Bowl
* The Hushpuppies Bowl
* The Grits Bowl

It could be worse-the Harris Teeter Grocery Store chain out of Charleston, SC could be a sponsor!
Kroger owns Harris Teeter now. HT is a great store but not quite as nice as Wegman's though.
Purchase scared the hell out of us down here. Like Family Dollar they are based in Matthews, NC. And Harry the Dragon is a pretty good mascot.

Go no further than Carolina Barbecue Bowl. Though it would be better as an all-star game pitting the East Vs. the West.

Only a few will understand.

I'm afraid this one would have a restroom issue.

One of my delusions of grandeur (say, for instance, I finally hit the Powerball) is restarting the Blue-Gray Classic. That was a long-time Christmas Day TV watching tradition in the Money household back in the day.

Stop N Cop sold cases of Natty Light in bottles for $6.99. Those were always fun to smuggle into Gam Hall on a Friday afternoon.

For the bowl game, here's what I'm hoping for.

1. Windham ends his career with a flourish, throwing a couple of TD's to Sebastian Smith, who catches the eyes of some scouts.

2. Basham gets a couple of sacks helping him to get drafted in the mid-rounds.

3. We get the W.

The most interesting bowl name of a bowl that actually existed, is the Salad Bowl. Miami even played in it once and beat Arizona State.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salad_Bowl_(game )

There was also once a Cherry Bowl in Michigan:

Finally saw a line on the game.
We're a 5 point underdog.

British,

Do Troy fans have a genuine dislike for Alabama or Auburn fans? Just curious the dynamics of the fan base given you guys are in the same state as two powerhouses. We have that problem with only one. I can't imagine having two.

Most do hate both. Big reason why is the both refuse to play Troy...They have BOTH played EVERY other SBC member but Troy or USA. Our AD has reached out to both programs but no response. We have even got the local media involved and the Auburn AD publicly stated that Auburn will NEVER play Troy so long as he is AD at Auburn.

They have nothing to gain by playing little old Troy and EVERYTHING to lose. If we play and they win well big deal...If they play and lose well that would be national news and they won't risk it given they know Troy is a good G5 program and we would get up for that chance. Auburn played instate FCS Jacksonville state a couple years ago and it took OT to beat them I believe. Auburn won't risk that again. Only way we would play is if We make a access bowl against one of them, Tho they would probably decline it.

We do get the occasional Bammer or Barn fans to our games as they wear their crap. And they do get ridiculed from time to time. But I'm sure you guys have the same issue with Ohio State.

If I am reading the past schedules correctly, Troy's last bowl game was their drubbing of us several years ago. Hopefully there's no repeat, but looking at their results from this year, I expect a pretty stiff test. To quote Dom Toretto, "It don't matter if you win by an inch or a mile. Winning's winning." I just want to see the season close with a W, no matter how it comes or how pretty it is. Bring the same intensity that was brought in Detroit, and I like our chances.

Yeah, unfortunately, people wearing Buckeye jerseys are quite common on Court Street in Athens during the fall.

I love the reaction I get from folks in my hometown 60 miles NW of Columbus when they ask me my favorite college football team, and I respond "The Ohio Bobcats".

Ya you guys were our last bowl game. After that game we fell from the earth... Our 24 year head coach got the Bobby Bowden syndrome...

Neal Brown was our OC from 2007-2009 so in 2010 we had a slight drop off but still have enough power to get through the year.

Now that he has returned as our head coach, here we are...

It sounds like Auburn and Alabama would try to kick you guys out of football if they could, kinda like what they (mostly a Bama follower) tried to do with UAB.

Ohio State at least schedules Ohio every once in a while. They played each other twice (three times?) in the last decade. The MAC and the Big Ten kind of have a unsigned agreement that they'll keep scheduling each other to make everyone happy.

They def would. They are not too happy about UAB returning but got too much heat for it... don't think they won't try it again when they make sure that program failes again.

Luckily Alabama or Auburn have NOTHING to do with Troy university. We are our own system.

I stopped in my friendly local Dollar General store today and asked the young lady at the register:

1) Will you all be doing any promotions for the Dollar General Bowl? Got a slight unknowing smile and a slow head shake back and forth. Had no idea what I meant.

2) After explaining what the bowl is, I mentioned that a local team, the Ohio Bobcats, would be playing in the game. Got a slight unknowing smile...had no idea what I meant.

On my way out I passed a Bucknut display and shelves.

Looking forward to the battle of the bands.

Troys Sound of the South vs your Marching 110 should be a great game atmosphere

Ohio at least under Schaus isn't scheduling Ohio State. The model is second tier P5 schools (Purdue, Kansas, Virginia, Pittsburgh, Boston College, Northwestern, Iowa State) who the Bobcats can defeat. Most MAC do play the in-state Big Ten to "keep the money in-state".

Yes, did it quickly. That's why I asked the clerk. I think it would make sense corporately for Dollar General to promote the game through their local stores. But I didn't see any posters or any hint about the game

During my senior year at OU, my girlfriend - later to become my wife Lynne - was a southerner. The summer after graduating and before starting my Army service, I flew south to visit her and her family. From Georgia we journeyed west through Alabama and Mississippi and north to Memphis and then across the river and southwest to Pine Bluff, Arkansas where Lynne was born. Along the way I learned of a southern grocery chain - Piggly Wiggly. Now, wouldn't that make for a snicker-inducing name for a bowl?

Piggly Wiggly would be good, or another grocery chain, that ceased to exist about 2000, Hinky Dinky.

Seriously, in theory, the fans of most MAC teams are university educated, and I doubt that people with a college degree are a prime demographic for Dollar General, so this game is an odd choice. If they wanted to sponsor a major game, it would actually make more sense, as when you move up to a P5 team, a larger portion of the fans didn't go to the school in question.

That is a very interesting statement and if true, goes to show you how small the MAC fan base is. In Ohio, only one in four people has a college degree.
