I really think that he could be a 3-4 DE in the NFL. I hope he gets a great agent and runs well. I know his bench press and tape will verify his strength. Run for you NFL life Casey Sayles.

I think both Basham and Sayles could be drafted and how high they go comes down to their 40s... They have the tape already

Brown is moving up the boards as well. Sayles did everything that the coaches asked. I hope their recommendation, his tape and his athleticism gets him drafted. If he runs below a 4.9, I think you can book it.

Exciting to think about. Basham seems to be a lock in the draft.

In most draft years, Basham would likely be a lock to be selected in the first 3 rounds. This year is loaded with pass rushers so he will likely fall to the 3rd day of the draft.

It comes down to his workout

I actually think the Senior Bowl is more important than his workout. Either way, it will be tough to pass many of the guys in front of him.

When DeMarcus Walker from FSU is barely in the top 10 DEs, that shows you how loaded this class is.

Basham is the rated number 10 DE, we have to stop thinking so low of ourselves.

Sometimes we can be our own worst enemy, and the nattering nabobs of negativism around here make it hard to improve our self image.

Not being negative at all. I follow the draft very closely each year. I am not speaking negatively about Basham at all. I would love to see him go higher than I expect. I am just pointing out that the position he plays is very deep in this year's draft.

you are right, it is a deep position, he is highly thought of, hopefully he keeps rising.

Ohio's coaches saw that he could help right away, which he did, achieving freshman AA, some would have been happy, yet 93 worked and worked to both improve himself and accomplish what the coaches needed, sometimes sacrificing his own notoriety. He shared playing time, stayed healthy and I believe has demonstrated that it is in him to continue to work hard and still has not peaked with an upside well worth a draft pick.

Performance in games would seem to be A LOT more indicative than workouts.

I love how those who post thoughts which are reasonably objective (about NFL prospects or performance for OHIO..or anything at all) about players which are not entirely sunny are negative and bringing down the program.

Yeah. The truth is not allowed. Only 100% absolute perfectly optimistic viewpoints are.

Of course, so many of the SFB cannot register the relatively objective value/performance of our players. Blinded by the GreenAndWhite.

...

One thing about the workouts is that they are on equal terms for all. Did Basham only look good because the foes were weak, while a player for, some random team in the SEC was better, but didn't have the numbers because he was up against better blockers? With workouts they have a measure that is independent of competition.

Both performance in games and raw ability as measured in workouts matter.

I don't know about that.

Lots of guys look good in the uniform.

Quality players generally get it done no matter the opposition.

I'll guys who get it done in game action all day over guys who have to rely on time trials or weight lifting feats or shooting drills (hoops), etc, etc, etc.

You might want to contact the NFL scouts, and share your wisdom with them. Apparently they are wasting an awful lot of money running the combine, and doing things like timing and testing athletes.

C'mon. Think a little, please:

Do you think that the NFL scouts/managers are ignoring game film?

Isn't it a lot easier to do workouts than it is to create further games for the players to play in. So, workouts are better than what can't be.

Thus, workouts have value. I never said that they didn't.

But if you only had one or the other...game film or workouts...to go on, which would you go with?

Look, I suppose you can disagree with the above, but I really think that if you do, then you are not thinking.

No, you're being beholden to a point of view, regardless of sense.

Watch "Trouble With The Curve." It's fiction but relevant...and a really good movie.

Way to create a straw man and then knock it down. However, since no one ever said that games were meaningless, the straw man is meaningless. In fact, this is what I said that you disagreed with:

Now, if I was to put up a poll on BA and ask who this statement most applies to between you, L.C., Mid70s, and few other frequent posters, who do you think would garner the most votes? ;-)
